An Inter-Rater Reliability Study On The Multi-Dimensional Outcome Measure, Grace Boys

The purpose of the study was to explore the inter-rater reliability of the Multi-Dimensional Outcome Measure (MDOM) in the following areas: overall reliability, differences in reliability between samples, differences in reliability between scales, and increasing reliability over time. The study was to assist mental health professionals by clarifying the technical properties of an evaluation tool which could be used to document program outcomes for policy makers and to develop more effective treatment methodologies.

The preoccupation with obesity finds expression in the popularity of books and articles dealing with dieting and weight control, the rapid growth of weight reduction groups such as Tops and Weight Watchers, as well as the full marketing of numerous low calorie and dietetic foods. Much of the interest in weight control is a consequence of the current standards of physical beauty in our society. But another more pressing reason for interest in weight control is the documented evidence relating obesity to various somatic disorders.

This study was designed to test the hypotheses that ambulatory cardiac patients given a special teaching program would have increased understanding about their medication, make fewer medication errors, and know more about undesirable effects and how to handle them than patients not included in the special teaching program. Forty-one ambulatory cardiac patients were, after a random start, alternately assigned to an experimental or to a control group. All the patients were taking one or more of three different medications before hospitalization, during their hospital stay, and after their discharge. This research was performed to determine if bony changes could be effected by activator treatment and how stable this treatment is.

From a sample of twenty-seven cases with before activator treatment cephalometric radiographs. Rocky Mountain Data Systems provided growth projections, with and without edgewise treatment, for the period of time each patient was in treatment. These forecasts were compared to the post-treatment cephalograms to analyze the orthopedic effects of activator treatment with normal growth and with edgewise therapy.

Nine of the twenty-seven case treated sample responded to recall for post-treatment cephalograms and were analyzed for relapse.

A method is described for preparing an enriched fraction of the three major antibodies, immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM, from normal human serum by a batch method. Selective precipitation of these proteins was carried out in successive steps using polyethylene glycol (PEG) of average molecular weight 6,000 at concentrations of 7%, 12% and 14% (16) . Zinc sulfate (10 mM) was used to remove highly immunogenic alpha₂ macroglobulin from the IgM fraction. IgA, IgM and IgG were further purified by adsorption methods using DEAE-cellulose. Blastospore and mycelial cytoplasmic extracts from four strains of Candida albicans, varying in virulence, were compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis Cytoplasmic extracts were made by disrupting the cultures in a Braun homogenizer followed by ultracentrifugation. The supernatant fractions were then resolved on polyacrylamide gels containing SDS. Each of the preparations yielded a distinct pattern. There were mycelial specific and blastospore specific protein bands. There were more components resolved from the blastospore phase cytoplasmic extracts than from the mycelial phase cytoplasmic extracts. There were bands common to both phases. Primarily this study sought to investigate growth of syntactical skills in language delayed children enrolled in the Monterey Language Program (MLP) (Gray and Ryan, 1973a) in several Portland Public Schools during the 1974-75 school year. The Programmed Conditioning for Language Test (PCLT) (Gray and Ryan, 1973a) and the Northwest Syntax Screening Test (NSST) (Lee, 1970) were administered and pretest scores compared to posttest scores. This study sought to investigate the Spanish and English receptive pictorial vocabulary of four- and five-year-old bilingual Mexican-American children. The performance of bilingual Mexican-American children on the Mexican-American Inventory of Receptive Abilities--MIRA (Nelson-Burgess and Meyerson, 1975) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test--PPVT (Dunn, 1959) was compared to that of monolingual Anglo-American children of the same relative age range and socioeconomic level.

Hoarseness seems to be the primary type of voice disorder occurring in school-aged children. Voice experts have suggested measurement of maximum phonation times as a clinical tool for assessing vocal function (Fairbanks, 1940; Westlake and Rutherford, 1961; Irwin, 1965; Boone, 1971). Most of the studies on duration of phonation have used adults as subjects; few investigations have involved children. An apparent need, therefore, existed to investigate duration of phonation in young children.

A school-based dental program was established at the Mary Hooker Elementary School under a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Administration was under the auspices of the University of Connecticut, Department of Pediatrics. The author participated in the organization of the program. Pertinent literature on evaluation of health care and dental care in particular are reviewed. An evaluation system for this program is developed, which can be extended to other dental care facilities.

The present study utilized a model apartment as a transitional facility in conjunction with exposure-sampling to increase the movement of care home residents to independent living. A model apartment is oen set up with all items necessary for everyday living, including dishes, pots and pans, bedding, cleaning articles, etc., which serves as an example of what the client might live in were he to move to his own apartment. The possible application of habit reversal to mentally ill institutional residents has not been investigated. While habit reversal holds considerable promise as a treatment mode, due to its rapid success and patient involvement in controlling his-her own behavior, further research is in order. To investigate the generality of habit reversal to an institutionalized population, the present study utilized self-monitoring, which has been found to be effective with hospitalized patients, and habit reversal, which has been found to be effective with a non-hospitalized population, as a treatment package for eliminating nervous tics.
