The utilization of group procedures has mushroomed in the past ten years. While developing in part from group psychotherapy, involvement in groups has become a movement in its own right. Encounter groups, marathons or other intensive group experiences are no longer seen as a "second-best" treatment but a useful technique to be added to the tools of the psychotherapist. However, the rapid development of these treatments have often exceeded a strong theoretical rationale and the negative consequences have become increasingly evident. In order to assess the negative effects of color, size, shape, and spacing (length) transformations on conservation judgements sixty-four 3, 4, 5, and 6 year old children were tested on four Piagetian type conservation of number tasks each containing one reversible color, size, shape or spacing transformation. Order of transformation presentation was counterbalanced and number of objects used per transformation were varied from 3 to 5 to 7 to 9. Results show that spacing (when compared to color, size and shape) is a prepotent cue for non-conserving 3, 4, and 5 year olds but not for 6 year olds. Results …

Agatha Rollins’ 1977 master’s project, Electronic Cell Pattern Recognition Manual, explores the feasibility of using the Technicon Hemalog "D" Differential Analyzer as a diagnostic tool for hematologic diseases. The analyzer identifies white blood cell types through electronic signals based on their scatter and absorbance patterns in the peroxidase channel. Rollins hypothesized that similar diseases would yield consistent, recognizable electronic patterns, enabling identification without manual microscopy.

The project involved analyzing patients with various conditions—including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myeloperoxidase deficiency, eosinophilia, and several leukemias—by comparing manual differential counts with Hemalog “D” results. The effects of ethanol administration on the antinociceptive activity, lethal properties and brain concentration of methadone, were investigated. The effect of ethanol on the antinociceptive activity of methadone was assessed by the hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Concentrations of methadone in the brain were determined by the use of 3H-methadone as well as by gas liquid chromatographic analysis. The study showed that moderate doses of ethanol did not alter tail-flick or hot-plate response by themselves. However, when combined with methadone, ethanol produced a significant increase in the antinociceptive effectiveness of methadone as measured by both a decrease in the ED50 of …

This study investigated the validity of the general ability factor, Factor B of the Early School Personality Questionnaire(ESPQ), in two ways. First, validity coefficients for Factor B were obtained by computing product-moment correlation coefficients between the ESPQ Factor B raw scores of 40 developmentally disabled subjects and their raw scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R). Second, the Kruskal-Wallis rank sums test and a distribution-free multiple comparisons test were employed to determine if there were significant differences among the mean ESPQ Factor B raw scores of subjects designated as mentally retarded, learning disabled, or normal. Cyclic adenosine 3’,5’-monophosphate (cAMP) was first described as the mediator of the glycogenolytic effect of epinephrine and glucagon in the liver almost two decades ago. It has since been found that cAMP may mediate the effects of a number of hormones and neurohormones, and this observation has led to the development of the second messenger hypothesis of hormone action. According to the second messenger theory, the hormone or first messenger brings information to the cell, whereas, the second messenger (cAMP) transfers this information into intracellular events. The purpose of this study was to determine what sociocultural, sociodemographic, and sociopsychological factors the Sisters in four Wards in the Taipei Taiwan Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints perceived as keeping them from using the health services during the period from June 1975 to May 1976.

Forty-five Sisters, age twenty-one and older, were surveyed by a written questionnaire during Relief Society meetings during the last week in June and the first week in July 1966.

1. The type of animal blood used in preparing blood agar plates did not significantly affect the demonstration of hemolysis by any streptococcal species except for S.faecalis. S.faecalis more consistently displayed an alpha reaction on sheep blood agar while expressing a beta reaction on horse and rabbit blood agars.

2. A recommended scheme for identifying streptococci, adaptable to most any clinical laboratory, was developed and is outlined in Table 13.

A total of 243 Mental Hygiene and Introductory Psychology students completed ratings of adjustment in January of 1976. In May of the same year, 65 of the original Mental Hygiene students and 110 of the Introductory students completed the post-testing under one of four procedures.
