The Relationship Between Adiposity And Functional Capacity In 60 Women Attending Utah State University 1975-76, Barbara P. Gibbs

The purpose of this study was to test whether a relationship exists between adiposity and functional capacity. A moderate negative correlation was found between adiposity and functional capacity. This indicates that as adiposity increases, functional capacity decreases.

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Home Auditory Program of Project SKI*HI on the listening skills of its students during the years 1972-1975. The scores of two groups of children, as measured on the SKI*HI Listening Skills Scale were compared. The statistical evaluation indicated that: 1. Significant improvements in listening skills were demonstrated by one group of children during three to eleven months of treatment, and 2. The scores of this treated group were significantly superior to the non-treated group, despite a similarity in age and degree of hearing loss between the two groups. …

One of the primary purposes of the investigation was to examine the impact of a number of variables on the incidence of low birth weight in two states, Utah and Nevada, that have divergent low birth weight incidences. The sample size obtained from birth certificate data for this purpose was 51,147 (1969-1974) for Nevada and 26,464 (1970) and 29,422 (1974) for Utah. Additionally, separate analyses were made for Utah and Nevada data available for the year 1974. The respective sample sizes for this year were 29,422 (Utah) and 8,256 (Nevada). "Branching From Within" is a counseling and rehabilitation program designed to support individuals with physical disabilities through an integrated therapeutic approach. A study was conducted to determine the effects of two oral health in-service teaching methodologies on intact groups of staff members and patients at two extended health care facilities. Oral health in-service education conducted by a dental hygienist (IV₁ ); and oral health in-service education with direct guidance of the staff's oral health services to patients by the dental hygienist (IV₂ ) were implemented at the Medicenters of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, respectively.

This single subject experiment was conducted to determine whether a 23-year-old male could be taught to swallow his saliva, thus eliminating his drooling behavior. The subject had been diagnosed as severely retarded early in life and was reported to have drooled his entire life. The experiment was conducted in the sheltered workshop where the subject is employed, utilizing positive reinforcement in the form of verbal praise, Kennedy half dollars and participation in social events. Using plaque scores as the measurement criterion, two different methods of teaching plaque control skills were tested. Based on initial plaque scores, 25 patients with periodontal disease were paired and divided into two groups: a "step-by-step" and "all-in-one" group. The subjects of both groups were given four one-half hour appointments of instruction. Members of the "step-by-step" group were taught in three successive appointments a horizontal scrub toothbrushing method, how to floss and how to use the Perio Aid. This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)₂ to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. The canals were cleaned and shaped and filled with Ca(OH)₂ for one week. They were then irrigated and received one of seven different treatments in a balanced design. The role of cytochrome P-450 in in vitro methemoglobin formation by primaquine was investigated through a series of experiments with golden-Syrian hamsters, treated before sacrificing with phenobarbital or 20-methylcholanthrene to increase the cytochrome P-450 content or with cobaltous chloride to cause its decrease. To determine the extent of induction in the liver microsomal cytochrome P-450-dependent mixed-function oxidases, cytochrome P-450 content and formaldehyde from the 0-demethylation of p-nitroanisole were measured. A 90% increase occurred in cytochrome P-450 content with phenobarbital pretreatment and an increase of 102% was observed in p-nitroanisole 0-demethylation. Formaldehyde from primaquine increased 64%. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether there was a relationship between the results obtained from tests of auditory language performance and those obtained from tests of central auditory performance. The performances of ten learning disabled children were compared with the performances of ten normal achievers on the six auditory language subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and the staggered spondaic word test and Willeford's tests of central auditory processing abilities. Assessment of articulatory productions is usually accomplished with picture stimuli to elicit responses from young subjects. The levels of scoring phonemes on articulation tests are two-way (correct/incorrect), four-way (correct, distortion, substitution and omission) or by narrow phonetic transcription. The results of our personal studies of alpha-l-protease inhibitor (APi, formerly termed alpha-l-antitrypsin), the major inhibitor of protease in extracellular fluids, are presented in this dissertation. In the first chapter, we describe techniques used for APi quantitation and determination of Pi phenotypes. After a brief review of the available techniques, we report several improvements on our original technique of Pi phenotyping using thin-layer isoelectric focusing. Particular attention is given to biochemical and immunological methods for verification of the results obtained by isoelectric focusing. Three complementary techniques are reported: protease probe, crossed immunoelectrophoresis, and print immunofixation. Analysis of the results from …

The results of patient flow, work sampling, and demographic analyses of the General Medicine outpatient Clinic at the Medical University of South Carolina are presented. Data collection procedures are discussed. The association between clinic efficiency and selected demographic characteristics of the patient population is examined. Inhibitors to smooth patient flow are revealed through the examination of the distributions of service and queue times. Hourly distributions of staff time expended in various activities are presented, and the work sampling data is correlated with results from the patient flow study. The usefulness of the results as indices of clinic efficiency is considered.

Duck Plague Virus An Investigation Of Cytopathic Effects, In-Vitro Host Range, And Inhibition By Phosphonoacetic Acid, Ronald Attanasio

Duck plague is a hemorrhagic, necrotic disease found exclusively in the order Anseriformes, family Anatidae (ducks, geese, swans). The etiologic agent has been reported to be a herpes-like virus. The Holland strain of duck plague was found to induce cytopathic effects in cell culture (perinuclear vacuolation followed by lysis). A simple reproducible plaque assay for quantitating the virus was developed. Under conditions of the plaque assay, one-hit kinetics were observed. The host range of duck plague virus in cell culture was found to include the order Galliformes, family Phasianidae (pheasants, quails and partridges).
