The present study addressed some of the peripheral statements emanating from Kiesler’s (Kiesler, Bernstein & Anchin, 1976) core communications theory by examining (1) a specific component of the communication style of the obsessive personality, (2) the distinctive emotional engagements the obsessive personality elicits when interacting with others, and (3) a situational determinant that is hypothesized to trigger relatively intense expression of the obsessive’s self-defeating communication style, as well as a higher level of state anxiety.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the change in serum osmolality in the chronic renal failure patient on hemodialysis and the number of clinical symptoms of the dialysis disequilibrium syndrome experienced during hemodialysis. The study was conducted at the Renal Dialysis Unit of an urban medical center located in a southeastern city. Data were collected from May 25, 1978 to June 30, 1978. Data were obtained during 28 hemodialysis procedures performed on 11 subjects. The major part of this study was a treatment program designed to motivate mentally retarded adults to lose weight within a small group setting. Subjects were tested pre- and posttreatment on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale to ascertain any improvement in self-esteem. A 50-question diet quiz was constructed by the experimenters and administered pre- and posttreatment to find out if the subjects would improve their knowledge of health and nutrition through the study.

An interest in understanding the aging processes, as they relate to voice, has prompted research investigating physiological, acoustical, and perceptual attributes of the aging vocal mechanism. Recently, it has been demonstrated that perceptual parameters, in older male voices, differentiate speakers according to age estimations, as determined by a group of listeners.

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptual characteristics of the female voice which are associated with perceived age, as contrasted to chronological age.

This study was designed to investigate the perceivability of emotion in esophageal speech. Specifically, the questions under study were: (1) Are naive listeners able to accurately perceive emotional intention from auditory samples of esophageal speech? (2) Are the listeners' judgments of emotion from esophageal speech made with as much confidence as similar judgments made on normal laryngeal speech? A perceptual paradigm was utilized in which listeners made emotion judgments from speech samples of one laryngeal and one esophageal speaker. Two master audiotape recordings were constructed. This investigation sought to determine the accuracy and consistency of judgements made by three groups of judges, relative to successive approximations of /r/. The three groups were made up of speech pathologists, student trainees, and untrained individuals, respectively. It was the task of these judges to rank order three /r/ productions into the following categories: correct; partially correct; and incorrect. This task is basically the same as reinforcing approximations of /r/ within the therapy situation, and appears not to require extensive training. Many authors have found little difference between trained and untrained listeners in identifying correct versus incorrect articulation. An …

The prevalence of heart disease in the population over age 65 has contributed to the increasing number of aged patients hospitalized in critical care units (Gsell, 1977). Changes which occur in the process of aging and in cardiac disease should be considered when providing nursing care to these patients. A disturbance in the sleep wakefulness cycle resulting in a decrease of restorative sleep is a major change occurring at age 65 and after (Feinberg, 1967). The cardiac patient finds that it takes longer to go to sleep, and then awakens often during the night (Karacan et al., 1969).

Ten coronary artery disease patients were selected using purposive method of sampling and observed for six hours. It was postulated that 1) Human contact with coronary artery disease patients in the coronary intensive care unit would be associated with significant (p = 0.05) changes in the electrocardiogram such as: (a) increased heart rate more than 10 per cent, (b) changed atrio-ventricular conduction more than 10 per cent, (c) changed ST segment one millimeter or more and (d) increased frequency of ectopic beats more than 10 per cent. 2) The degree of stress and cardiac response was related to a number …

This study dealt with the effect on various athletic parameters, of small alcoholic dosages (.2cc of 95% alcohol per lb. of body weight, consumed nightly over a period of ten days. Adult, male athletes (ten runners and one swimmer with a mean age of 31 (SD±3.9)) who trained regularly were used as subjects. The subjects performed a battery of five tests: pull-ups, jump reach, reaction time, hand grip strength, and six minute bicycle ergometer test (1206 kpm). The purpose of this clinical research project was to use an interaction analysis system to compare the behaviors of clinicians and their clients with two types of communicative disorders and to determine how the clinicians utilized their clinical time. More specifically, this study employed the Conover Analysis System (Conover, 1974) and compared the client-clinician behaviors in the Portland State University Urban Language Clinic and Stuttering Clinic. The data which were gathered provided a baseline of the client-clinician behaviors in the two clinical settings.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of warmed humidified oxygen on the body temperature of depressed newborns and compare it to the effect of unwarned un-humidified oxygen administered under similar circumstances. The sample group consisted of a total of ten infants (five control and five experimental) with birth weights > 2000 gms who had an Apgar score of less than seven at birth and who required the administration of oxygen.
