Premature birth deprives the infant of the influences of maternal uterine stimulation on his physical growth and neurological development. It also deprives the newborn of the influences of the maternal sleep cycle and other aspects of maternal cyclicity. This problem has been recognized and studied for at least two decades by physiologists and neonatologists, but very few studies have been done on manipulating the premature infant's environment in order to foster cyclic patterns such as sleep.

Boucharq and Corson (1976) found that subjects required to lower heart rate to avoid the loss of money used the strategy of attending to meaningless stimulation twice as often as subjects required to lower heart rates to obtain money, and that subjects decreasing heart rate to avoid the loss of money performed significantly better than subjects required to lower heart rate to obtain money.

This study investigated the relationship of auditory short-term memory and articulation ability of eight-year-old children to determine if a relationship existed between auditory short-term memory ability and articulation ability. The specific question posed was: Is there a statistically significant difference in the auditory short-term memory ability of eight-year-olds with three or more phoneme errors and eight-year-olds with no phoneme errors?

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of isotonic and isokinetic weight training on vertical jumping proficiency as measured by a modified vertical jump. The subjects were college students enrolled in the Fitness and Lifetime Activities Program at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Isotonic and isokinetic training were assigned to the two experimental groups with the third group serving as controls. Training for the experimental groups consisted of isotonic circuit training on a Universal weight machine and isokinetic training on a Leaper machine. The genus Brunfelsia (Fam. Solannceae) comprises some 40 species of shrubs native to South Africa and West Indies. Brunfelsia hopeana (common name: Manaca root) and related species are recognized in folk medicine in South America as being useful as diuretic, antirheumatic, antisyphilitic agents and as narcotic hallucinogens. In view of the interesting folkloric uses and a paucity of chemical and pharmacological investigation of B. hopeana, a systematic phytochemical and pharmacological investigation on B. hopeana was undertaken in our laboratory.

The purpose of this study was to examine, from a phonological and morphological point of view, two-year old children's utterances of final /s/ and final /z/ in singular (CVC) and plural (CVCC) forms.

The subjects were 32 two-year old children who attended day-care centers. There were 13 males and 19 females, ranging in age from 26 months to 36 months, with an average age of 29 months.

The study investigated aspects of a communications model of psychotherapy advanced by Grinder and Bandler. Subjects were thirty male and female undergraduate introductory psychology students at Eastern Illinois University during the summer of 1977. The subjects ranked a set of tape recorded statements for "understandability". These statements were presented in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic representational modes. Subject ratings provided a measure of which representational modes communicated most effectively to them. Three independent judges rated transcripts of recorded samples of the subject's actual language usage to determine the representational modes utilized by the subjects. The gallows laugh or the gallows smile occurs after a special kind of stimulus and response called the gallows transaction, Berne (1972). Gallows transactions include laughs or smiles directly following statements which are actually painful to the individual. The distinguishing mark of humor in the gallows transaction is that it isn't funny. To date, there has been little scientific research on the gallows transaction.

This study concerned itself with voluntary contraceptive sterilization in general, and involved both vasectomy and female sterilization individually. Vasectomy and female sterilization were not considered to be the same and were treated individually, yielding two studies in one. Males were studied for psychological, marital and sexual reactions to vasectomy; and females were studied for the same reactions to female sterilization. Although references will often be made to sterilization as a general term, this distinction should be maintained throughout the research. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of trad~tional group therapy treatment for alcoholic out-patient clients with group therapy plus approaches that incorporated behavioral self-control techniques. Reducing anxiety in social situations was the focus of the behavior therapy treatments. Only alcoholics who were highly anxious (eightieth percentile), according to their scores on the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (!PAT) Anxiety Scale, were used as subjects.
