The intensive care unit's effect on the patient has become a subject discussed often by nurses and other health team members. One of the nursing interventions that has been implemented to attempt to de crease the potentially harmful environmental effects of the ICU on the patient is orienting the patient about what to expect prior to the ICU admittance.

Human Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2)-transformed Balb/c mouse cells (H238 cells) are malignant in Balb/c mice. The immune stratus of mice bearing H238 cell-induced tumors was studied and changes in immune response with time and with altered diet of the mice were measured.

In the experiments dealing with the status of immunity with time after tumor cell injection, mice were fed Purina Laboratory Chow (P.L.C.), injected with H238 cells, and sacrificed three to eight weeks post-injection. The purpose of this study was to test the possible influence of perceptual set on listeners' judgments of voice quality deviations. Perceptual set was created by instructions given to an experimental group which limited their choices, thus encouraging a particular response. The effect of set on the overall performance of the group, on backward versus forward voice samples and on the level of experience of the listener were all investigated.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the warm water bath and the radiant heater on the axillary temperatures of normal newborns. The sample group consisted of thirty newborns--15 babies placed into the water bath in Group I, and 15 babies placed under the radiant heater in Group II. Birth weights were between 6.25 and 8.75 pounds, gestational ages between 37 and 41 weeks, and 5-minute Apgar scores were 8 or more. The maternal temperatures, taken within two hours before birth, ranged between 97 and 99 degrees. All infants were born by spontaneous or low-forceps vertex …

The objective of this thesis is to provide for the cardiologist polarcardiograms and additional diagnostic criteria which will enable him to diagnose heart disease more easily. Other contributions are those of: (a) providing a system of data acquisition and (b) analyzing Dr. Gordon Dower’s criteria for myocardial infarction using the programs provided in this thesis.

The problem inherent in the reading of a polarcardiogram is the identification of the "loop" patterns with the associated heart disease. This can be accomplished by reading and interpreting both vectorcardiograms and electrocardiograms as well as angiograms, then relating the interpretation to the polarcardiogram patterns. …

The view of not expanding mandibular canines to accommodate incisor crowding because of the fear of relapse of of the incisors has been generally accepted in orthodontics for many years. Most studies that have investigated expanded mandibular canine stability have concluded that they could not be permanently expanded to any degree. By adding another variable (rapid midpalatal expansion) to canine expansion it was thought that this might possibly increase canine expansion stability.

The effect of increasing the dietary protein and pyridoxine level on calcium balance and bone strength was studied in growing and adult rats. The loss of calcium due to urinary excretion of o-phosphoryl-ethanolamine on a high protein diet was also examined.

Three studies were conducted. In the first adult male rats were fed 40% protein diets with high or low pyridoxine or a low protein, low pyridoxine diet. Calcium balance and femur bending stress were determined. In the second study male weanling rats were given either 10 or 63% protein with 0.40 or 0.73% pyridoxine. Thie purpose of these studies was to clarify the functional significance of glutamine penetration and metabolism in postnatal increas1e in renal a1T111onia production using rat kidney slices .

Glutamine uptake, metabolism and ammoniagenesis were studied in kidney slices isolated from mature, gonadectomized males and females, and newborn rats in the presence of varying concentrations of glutamine. Slices isolated from mature intact females showed significantly higher conversion of ¹⁴C-glutamine into ¹⁴co₂ and NH₃ without any change in total uptake compared to all other experimental groups. Ovariectomy reduced CO₂ and NH₃ production without any effect on …

The effective use of professional dietitians is predicated on the effective delegation of less demanding responsibilities and routine tasks to educationally qualified dietetic technicians. This is essential to effect optimal nutrition care at lowest cost.

The purpose of this research was to determine the degree to which dietetic technicians were performing identified tasks of the role as defined by the American Dietetic Association. A questionnaire was the survey instrument used to collect data from the 130 dietetic technicians who were members of the American Dietetic Association.

Almonds, peanuts, mung beans and soy beans were soaked in distilled water for 0, 2, 6, 18 and 24 hours, and the phytate in the seeds and in the soak water was quantitatively analyzed. A comparison of phytate content was made after the seeds were soaked in 0.01 N HCl or in saturated NaHco 3. The seeds soaked in distilled water served as controls. The effects of zinc and magnesium on stimulation of phytase in seeds were determined by comparing the quantity of substrate (phytate) with that of the control group.

Accurate and rapid identification of group A beta-hemolytic streptococci in upper respiratory infections is a vital step toward the appropriate treatment and eventual prevention of sequelae of streptococcal diseases. Presently, identification of group A streptococci may be accomplished in one of two ways: 1) serologically, by the Lancefield precipitin test, or by the fluorescent antibody test, and 2) by the bacitracin sensitivity disc test, or biochemically. Both the precipitin test and the bacitracin disc plate method take approximately 24-48 hours for identification of streptococci. The fluorescent antibody test requires less than 24 hours. This investigation was conducted to evaluate effects of acute altitude exposure on selected pulmonary, cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychological variables measured at rest, during, and after submaximal exercise. Comparisons were made between a group of men with coronary heart disease who were participants in an exercise reha­bilitation program (trained CHD's) and a group of healthy, asymptomatic, and sedentary individuals (HI's).

Nine male trained CHD's and 10 male HI's partici­pated in the study, which was conducted during an 8-week period. Initially, all subjects performed a maximal stress test on a bicycle ergometer at 1576m. Maximal values from this test were utilized in …

Healers and their middle and upper class patients were studied in an exploratory investigation of the decision to seek unorthodox care. Field research consisted of three parts. First, the spectrum of healers in a metropolitan area were identified. Second, five healers representative of this spectrum were chosen for detailed interview and observation. Third, a total of twenty-five patients, five from each of the subject healers' practices, were interviewed. The results question the assumption that the utilization of healers is restricted to the desperate, the medically indigent or unsophisticated, or to the non-medically oriented.
