Regulation Of Cartilage Acid Hydrolases And Their Relationship To Skeletal Growth, John Richard Hubbard

The in vivo regulation of several acid hydrolases by growth hormone was investigated in an attempt to lend insight into the mechanism of growth hormone action. In addition, the relationship of these enzymes to age-dependent changes in skeletal growth rate was examined. Initial studies showed that hypophysectomy reduced the activity of an unknown cartilage protease, which was assayed by digestion of gelatin-membrane substrates at pH 4.0. Treatment of hypophysectomized rats with growth hormone enhanced this activity to about normal levels. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of a walk or jog recovery on two-minute run performances and the concentrations of blood lactate.

Eight highly trained male subjects were selected from the Eastern Illinois University Track Team. The test procedure consisted of two, maximal two-minute runs on the track for distance, separated by a 30-minute recovery. The recovery consisted of a walk at 20-minutes per mile pace or a jog at 7½ to 8 minutes per mile pace. Twelve adult male rats were given free access to a two bottle free-selection of tap water or a 10% ethanol/tap water solution in the home cage for a period of 140 consecutive days with the alcohol consumption data in the form of mg absolute ETOH/g subject weight collected daily. This study incorporated three stages. Phase I was a 40 day period of alcohol acclimation with alcohol consumption during the second 20 days constituting the baseline consumption rate. The differential coping potential of the cognitive coping technique reversal of affect was tested.

Sixty four {32 control, 32 treatment) college students participated in the pretest and posttest of the experiment in which they self-disclosed information in a stressful situation. [From the Materials and Methods section] Eleven asthmatic subjects (4 male, 7 female) and ten healthy subjects (8 male, 2 female) without history of wheezing or asthma were recruited and informed consent was obtained. In order to select asthmatics with mild disease, members of the university and hospital community were chosen, avoiding the often more severe asthma of hospitalized and clinic patients. None of our subjects had been hospitalized for their asthma and none required corticosteroids. Three experiments were carried out with children in a private office on the measurement of distress caused by allergy treatment injections and on a behavioral technique to alleviate this treatment-induced distress. In Experiment 1 a rating scale to measure observable indices of distress with children receiving injections was developed and its construct validity and reliability determined. Loneliness is a topic of growing concern in the literature. Despite inherent difficulties in measuring such a personal experience, the present study was undertaken in order to gain knowledge concerning emotional needs of the dying cancer patient.

The conceptual frameworks for loneliness of Francis and Brown were combined and added to Bowen’s theory of “family reaction to death” to formulate the framework for this research. The relationship of secondary loneliness among adult clinic patients with metastatic cancer, and openness of their relationship system with a significant other was explored using the structured interview method. Between the months of June 1978 and June 1979, I was employed at Sunshine Terrace, a nursing home in Logan, Utah. In the year I spent there working as an orderly on the wing for incontinent male patients, I was exposed to a lot of things of which I had previously been unaware.

The hypothesis that prepared low-risk primiparae would experience shorter labors than unprepared low-risk primiparae was not upheld in the findings of the present study. The findings of the present study did appear to validate the findings of several other similar studies which reported no differences in length of labor between prepared and unprepared women. Suggestions for further study of some questions raised by the present study have been made.

An attempt was made to establish Thorsen's Primary Individual Language Screening Test (PILS) as a valid instrument for screening child language by comparing performance of a kindergarten population on the PILS and the Carrow Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language (TACL). Seventy-five subjects were administered both tests and correlational data was analyzed. If a statistically significant relationship existed, then one could assume that a score on the PILS would predict how one would do on the TACL. Although the differential response of malignant cells to hyperthermia was observed at the end of the last century, few investigations into the phenomenon were made until fairly recently. At first the results obtained were inconsistent due mostly to the inefficient techniques in use at the time. The advent of cell and tissue culture, increased knowledge in tumor biology, advances in molecular biology, and the development of equipment which could raise and monitor the temperature of tumors during hyperthermic treatments, have made the study of the effects of supranormal temperature on malignant neoplasias substantially more reliable.

Castration and testosterone replacement therapy served as a model to assess anabolic activity in the rat. The present study was undertaken to examine more closely whether changes in cellular anabolic activity are reflected in subsequent alterations of urinary N¹ -acetylspermidine excretion.

A sensitive fluorometric assay was employed which utilized the dansylation reaction . The dansylated derivatives were quantitated by normal phase high pressure liquid chromatography. This assay system exhibited a range of linearity from 0.1 to 10 nanomoles which encompassed the physiological variability observed during analysis of urinary N¹-acetyl spermidine.

The effects of continuous vs. intermittent reinforcement using electromyographic (EMG) feedback as the reinforcer were compared in reducing frontalis muscle activity. Fourteen subjects were chosen from a group of 30 students who had expressed an interest in learning how to relax. Those students having the highest pre-experimental baseline scores were chosen. They were matched according to both those scores and sex and then randomly assigned to either a continuous biofeedback reinforcement group or a 30 sec. fixed interval biofeedback reinforcement group. In the present study lanolin alcohol films were investigated as potential drug delivery systems for the controlled release of salicylic acid. A series of experiments were conducted in vitro to study the release of salicylic acid from these films. The effect of changes in film composition and stirrer speed on drug release were examined. Seven film compositions with varying proportions of lanolin alcohol and ethyl cellulose were prepared over the ethyl cellulose concentrations of 0-30% w/w, while keeping the drug concentration at 2.5% w/w. In the present study, two different drugs were used to induce a Parkinson-like condition. The first drug was the centrally acting cholinergic agonist oxotremorine (OXTM) which readily induces tremor and rigidity in mice (54). This tremor has been reported to be antagonized by dopamine agonists such as L-dopa and apomorphine (50,54,55) as well as by anticholinergic drugs such as scopolamine (46) . The other drug used was reserpine which interferes with the neuronal storage of dopamine and results in its depletion in the brain (56).
