More and more recognition is being given to the results of these studies, especially the possible adverse effects on those working the night shift or a shift they are unable to adapt to adequately. The purpose of this investigation was to develop objective pass/fail age-related scores for the Oral Language Sentence Imitation Screening Test (OLSIST). A group of 60 children, ages five years zero months to five years eleven months, served as subjects. The Denver Articulation Screening Exam (DASE), and the Screening Test For Auditory Comprehension of Language (STACL) were used to determine if each child's articulation and receptive language abilities were within normal limits. Each subject's scores on the OLSIST were then compared with his/her score on the CELI to determine the degree of correlation in pass/fail performances on the two tests.

Discharge from the hospital has been identified as a time when patients are in need of additional nursing support. The prospect of leaving the protective hospital environment to return to the home environment with its life stresses can cause anxiety. This study was designed to test the effect of a nursing intervention, discharge counseling sessions, on the anxiety level of the neurotically-depressed female prior to discharge.

Despite extensive clinical and experimental investigations of venous thrombosis, relatively little is known about the early phases of healing of the venous thrombus. Soon after its discovery heparin has become the most popular agent for the prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis, but there are a number of unanswered questions regarding the most satisfactory treatment for venous thrombosis.

One area of controversy has been the duration of anticoagulation therapy for acute venous thrombosis. If the anticoagulant is discontinued too soon, the thrombus may continue to propagate. Prolonged anticoagulant therapy exposes the patient to the risk of serious hemorrhage. The objective …

The physiological actions of norepinephrine (NE) were examined in the rat dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) using extracellular single cell recording and microiontophoresis. Prolonged, low current iontophoretic applications of NE consistently elicited an increase in the firing rate of LGNd neurons which was delayed in onset and prolonged after cessation of the ejection. Sympathomimetic amines other than NE also activated LGNd neurons with varying degrees of effectiveness. On the basis of the relative potencies of a series of these agonists and the ability of iontophoretically applied (alpha)-antagonists to selectively block the facilitatory action of NE, it is concluded that NE …

Cerebroside sulfate (CS) has recently been shown to bind opiate drugs in a pharmacologically relevent manner and therefore satisfy the structural requirements of an opiate receptor. Seminolipid (SGG), a novel sulfated galactosyl. glycerolipid that has been isolated from the testes of a variety of mammals, may be viewed as a structural analog of CS. In view of this structural similarity, it is reasonable to presume that SGG may also bind opiate drugs. Fifty-six semen samples from males under examination for suspected subfertility were examined to determine if alterations in specific semen parameters could be associated with the presence or absence or Ureaplasma urealvticum. Twenty-seven (48.2%) of the specimens cultured positive for U· urealyticum in U9B urease broth and A-7 differential agar. Both positive and negative specimens have a normal average motility rating. Overall sperm counts (millions per ml) were slightly lower and ejaculate volumes higher in U. urealvticum positive samples. Morphological abnormalicies were not found more frequently in U. urealyticum positive samples. No statistically significant difference between seminal parameters of U. …

The effects of staff training, incentive, and information and feedback on incidence of vandalism were compared in a four dormitory complex. The staff training condition was implemented on resident advisors and taught alcohol education, confrontation skills, and programming skills. For the incentive dormitory, residents received money in a floor fund which was then exchanged for back-up reinforcers. Residents in the information and feedback dormitory were prompted to reduce vandalism via flyers, activities, and a feedback chart posted on each floor. All dormitories experienced an increase in the drinking age from 18 to 21 years of age during the second semester …

Glucocorticoid Receptors In Liver Cytosol Of Adrenalectomized Diabetic And Nondiabetic Chinese Hamsters, Richard E. Gibson

The binding characteristics of glucocorticoid receptors in the liver cytosol of Chinese hamsters of the BE, BD (diabetic), and AV (nondiabetic) lines were studied and compared using a charcoal adsorption technique and ³H-dexamethasone. High affinity receptors(K_d ≃ 3 x 10^-9 M) were found with concentrations of 180 fmoles/mg protein in the nondiabetic and 260 fmoles/mg protein in the diabetic hamsters. Behavior of the receptor-steroid complex in 5 to 20% sucrose gradients of low and high salt concentrations (0.0 and 0.3 M KCl) and the competitive binding of other steroids were consistent with findings for rat liver glucocorticoid …

The purpose of the study was to validate a programmed text which was designed and written by the experimenter. Subjects in Group A, in Phase 1 of the experiment, were seven male and five female volunteers either working or enrolled as students in human service fields. Subjects in Group B, in Phase 2, were six females and four male graduate students enrolled in the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse treatment seminar at Western Michigan University. The presence of large numbers of enteric viruses in wastewaters has resulted in concern regarding their significance and consequences for humans. Assessments of relative significance or consequences may most accurately be made following precise measurements of the range of virus types and amounts in wastewaters and sludges and after epidemiological considerations. In this study, results are presented pertaining to enteric virus isolation, concentration, and enumeration from primary wastewater sludges.

[From the Introduction] Extramedullary solid tumors composed of partially differentiated hematopoietic precursors have been variously described in the literature, with some 500 case reports since 1824 employing such terms as chloroma, chloroleukemia, and myeloblastoma. Early case reports took particular note of the green color of many of the lesions, hence the term chloroma, and the dramatic orbital involvement in children, sometimes producing frog-like facies. Frequently however, these lesions lack distinctive coloration so that Rappaport has suggested the more general term, granulocytic sarcoma. This research examined the validity of videotaped analyses of clinical sessions in comparison to direct (live) observations. The subjects were eleven student clinicians and their respective clients, enrolled Fall Term, 1979, in Portland State University's Speech and Hearing Sciences Articulation and Language and Urban Language Clinics. The Boone-Prescott Interactional Analysis System, a numerically coded system, was used to record clinician/client interactions. Data were obtained for a randomly selected five-minute period from each of thirty clinical sessions.

Fibroblasts obtained from a child with Wolman’s disease and maintained in culture demonstrated acid lipase deficiency, reached senescence prematurely and exhibited an abnormal #5 chromosome. When cytogenetic analysis was repeated on frozen and stored cells, the chromosomal defect could no longer be demonstrated, but other anomalies were present. The karyotypes of other Wolman’s disease cell cultures and the parents of the proband were normal. The mother’s fibroblasts had reduced acid lipase activity, consistent with a carrier-state, but the father’s fibroblasts had normal acid lipase activity. It was possible to classify a culture as Wolman’s disease, carrier or normal by the …

The erythropoietin (Ep) dose response of erythroid colony-forming units (CFU-e) and erythroid burst-forming units (BFU-e) from rabbit bone were similar to murine erythroid precursor Ep requirements. Bone marrow and peripheral blood contained a continuum of erythroid precursors at differing stages of maturation. The earliest BFU-e were assayed on day 10. CFU-e were observed in bone marrow, but not in peripheral blood. The most mature erythroid precursors observed in peripheral blood were intermediate BFU-e, assayed on day 5. Investigation Of A Factor Released By Neoplastic Cells Which Produces A Chemokinetic Response In Activated Macrophages, Richard Durelle Lane

The increase in rate of random migration (chemokinesis) of C. parvum activated macrophages in media conditioned by Lewis Lung (LL) carcinoma cells was attributed to a trypsin sensitive, heat stable, high molecular weight factor released from the membrane of the tumor cells.

A capillary tube assay was developed to expediently monitor the chemokinetic activity of macrophages incubated in whole and fractionated media. The capillary tube assay was found to be capable of detecting both chemokinetic and chemotactic (directional movement) factors present in the test media. Statistical analysis revealed the capillary tube assay provided reproducible data both within and between experiments. …
