Depressive disorders are recognized as being of long standing clinical and theoretical concern. Early psychoanalytic conceptualizations of depression were later reformulated into theories emphasizing interpersonal manifestations of depression, notably passive-dependent oral trends. Recent research efforts have explored specific interpersonal behaviors and their relationship to depression. Although some studies have been done utilizing self-report data of interpersonal behavior, little has been done utilizing self-descriptions of interpersonal traits drawn from a sample of clinically depressed psychiatric outpatients.

It has been previously demonstrated that 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) is an initiator of ovarian granulosa cell tumors. It is also known that DMBA leads to destruction of primordial oocytes, and that tumor induction may involve the interaction of pituitary gonadotropins. However, the effects of DMBA on ovarian steroidogenesis and uterine growth in relation to the tumorigenic process have not been investigated. Controversy exists about the occurrence of exacerbations during pregnancy and the effect these exacerbations will have on the basic disease process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect pregnancy would have in precipitating exacerbation of disease activity. The investigation was carried out by comparing two matched groups of women with SLE, one group pregnant and the other group nonpregnant. The purpose of this investigation was to assess dental hygiene students' perceptions of themselves and the "typical dental hygienist" in regard to feminism. The accessible population was composed of all first-year, second-year, and post-certificate dental hygiene students at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Data were organized according to a 3x3x3 factorial research design with age, Q.P.A., and educational level as the assigned independent variables. The dependent variable, students' perceptions of themselves and the "typical dental hygienist," was measured by the Feminism II Scale.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADase) of bull semen is an extracellular, soluble enzyme capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of the nicotinamide N-ribosidic linkage of NAD⁺. In search for a rapid, simple procedure for the preparation of this enzyme, it was found that Matrex Gel Red A (Amicon) column packing served very well as an affinity gel for NADase. The enzyme was applied to the Matrex Red A column (21 cm x 1.5 cm) in 10 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 6.0. This study examined the vocational interests of dental hygienists according to occupational setting and highest level of education. The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory was used to measure vocational interests of a random cluster sample of licensed dental hygienists.

An ex post facto 2 x 2 factorial research design was used. Occupational setting and highest level of education completed were the attribute independent variables and the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory scores was the dependent variable.

Altered patterns of methylation have been shown in both ribosomal and transfer RNA isolated from cancer cells. In contrast to the elevated activity of the methyltransferases responsible for this modification, hypomethylation appears as a general characteristic. The endogenous levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine are important in relationship to their role as substrate and product of the transmethylation reaction. The levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine were determined using phosphocellulose cation exchange or high pressure liquid chromatography. This study examines the adoption and implementation of a decentralized budgeting model within a public mental‑health institution, focusing on the administrative, financial, and organizational consequences of shifting from a centrally controlled budget framework toward local unit responsibility. Drawing on archival records, budget data, and administrative narratives from the institution’s transition period, the analysis highlights how decentralization altered decision‑making dynamics, cost behaviour, service orientation, and internal accountability structures. The decentralization initiative empowered individual units by giving them budgetary control over expenditures previously managed at the centralized level, thereby increasing their autonomy over staffing, program purchases, and resource reallocation. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the morphologic changes that occur in cellular cementum exposed to periapical inflammation.

Ten single rooted human teeth were collected. There were five specimens of normal cellular cementum and five specimens of diseased cellular cementum, which had been exposed to periapical inflammation. Each specimen was fractured longitudinally through the apical foramen, leaving the organic component intact. The cross-sectional morphology of cellular cementum was then examined using an ARM Model 1000 scanning electron microscope. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry was also conducted on samples representative of the two test groups.

Orthodontic tooth movement was performed on five monkeys (Macaca nemistrina). Oral health was established and exploratory surgery was performed to assess the level of the connective tissue attachment and marginal bone. Measurements of the gingival margin and mucogingival junction were taken and orthodontic forces were applied. The central incisors were moved labially a mean distance of 3.05mm. Post therapy measurements were performed to assess the change which occurred as a result of tooth movement. Plasma samples were obtained from seven hypertriglyceridemic (>150 mg/dl) chronic renal failure patients before and after regular hemodialysis. The effect of the plasma on the lipolytic activity of bovine milk lipoprotein lipase was investigated. The lipoprotein lipase activity, as measured by release of C¹⁴-labeled free fatty acid from triglyceride, was decreased 8-67% when incubated with uremic plasma as compared to the control plasma (44 mg/dl triglyceride). The inhibition noted prior to hemodialysis did not appear to be alleviated by the dialysis but subsequent treatment with an isolated ultrafiltration technique did appear to remove an inhibitory substance as …

A study was made to investigate the biological possibility of obtaining new connective tissue attachment to periodontally diseased root surfaces following full thickness flap procedure. Reconstructive surgery was performed on seven teeth involved in advanced chronic periodontal disease. A mucoperiosteal flap was raised and the apical extent of existing subgingival calculus was marked with a notch made into the root just apical to the calculus. A study was undertaken to determine the concentration at which a sealer reaches a point of nontoxicity. An in vitro model utilizing HeLa cells and human fibroblasts was used to observe the effect of various concentrations of eight freshly mixed and eight set root canal sealers. Evaluation of toxicity was determined by cell survival which was measured by incorporation of ³H-thymidine into the nucleic acid components of each cell type used. The symphysis was cut A-P and expanded laterally 11 mm, then held and stabilized with a titanium mesh work screwed to the inferior border of the mandible. Preparations used in this study were obtained from an investigation which had undertaken the following:

Durapatite, a hydroxylapatite ceramic was implanted in 24 mature Beagle dogs to study its maintenance effect on the alveolar bone of the mandible.

After dividing the dogs into two groups, a fresh socket and a healed socket group, the posterior teeth were removed and alveolectomies were performed. Eight ceramic implants were then placed in the right mandible of each animal in each group. The healed group received the implants five weeks after tooth removal and the fresh socket group received implants immediately after extraction.

The anterior teeth of five adult pigtail monkeys were moved lingually to correct a previously induced labioversion. These teeth were retained in their more normal arch positions for five months, after which clinical and histologic measurements were made of the periodontium. The untreated cuspids served as controls. Measurements were made to record changes in the gingival margin, the mucogingival junction, the width of keratinized gingiva and the marginal bone level relative to a fixed point on the tooth crowns. Oxytetracycline was administered three times to label areas of osteogenesis in the periodontium.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the results as recorded in mental ages of the PPVT and TACL when used with developmentally delayed children. One aspect was to observe how well the mean mental age from each test would compare with the mean mental age obtained from psychometric testing (WISC-R or SB-LM results). Another aspect was to determine how well the data from the PPVT and from the TACL would correlate with the psychometric testing results.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of measuring the insertion loss (attenuation) provided by cannon earplugs using the Knowles Electronics Manikin for Acoustic Research. Five earplugs were tested in a 90 dB sound field at discrete frequencies matching those published by NIOSH. Each plug was exposed to 10 trials. Results indicate an approximation between values obtained in the study and NIOSH published values. Some consistent differences tend to indicate that NIOSH values may overrate low frequency attenuation.

During a psychiatric field placement, it was noted by this nurse researcher that patients with a diagnosis of depression often overtly displayed symptoms of anxiety. A brief literature review revealed that this anxiety-depression duality occurred frequently.

The purpose of this study was to determine if relaxation therapy was a therapeutic intervention which could be utilized by nurses to provide relief from the symptoms of the anxiety-depression syndrome.
