The Effects Of Alpha Adrenergic Blockade On Arachidonic Acid Metabolism And Shock Sequelae During Septic Shock In The Rat, Jeffrey Armstrong Jan 1987

The Effects Of Alpha Adrenergic Blockade On Arachidonic Acid Metabolism And Shock Sequelae During Septic Shock In The Rat, Jeffrey Armstrong

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Increased activity of the alpha adrenergic nervous system may be a significant factor promoting tissue ischemia in endotoxic shock. The suggestion that increased sympathetic activity affects prostaglandin synthesis prompted investigation of the potential interaction between the adrenergic nervous system and arachidonic acid metabolites during endotoxemia and septicemia. In addition, the possibility that the underlying patterns of arachidonic acid metabolites seen in two different shock models may provide a rationale for therapeutic intervention designed to block either or both the synthesis of arachidonic acid metabolites or the activity of the adrenergic nervous system was examined. Studies were undertaken to determine the …

Metabolism Of Branched-Chain Amino Acids By Rat Skeletal Muscle: Regulation Of Branched-Chain Alpha-Keto Acid Dehydrogenase, Robert Paul Aftring Jan 1987

Metabolism Of Branched-Chain Amino Acids By Rat Skeletal Muscle: Regulation Of Branched-Chain Alpha-Keto Acid Dehydrogenase, Robert Paul Aftring

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Catabolism of the essential branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) by skeletal muscle of the rat was investigated. In diaphragm muscles incubated in vitro oxidation and transamination of leucine or valine were accelerated by diabetes or starvation overnight. In the presence of pyruvate, transamination of BCAA by diaphragms was increased; oxidation of BCAA by diaphragms from diabetic or starved rats was increased by pyruvate but was inhibited in diaphragms of normal, fed rats. The effects on transamination were verified by direct measurements of the alpha-ketoisocaproate (KIC) product of leucine transamination. The effect of pyruvate on KIC oxidation by diaphragms was similar to …

Comparison Of Virulent And Avirulent Legionella Pneumophila And Evaluation Of Fish As A Potential Environmental Reservoir/Experimental Model, Sandra Reading Sommer Jan 1987

Comparison Of Virulent And Avirulent Legionella Pneumophila And Evaluation Of Fish As A Potential Environmental Reservoir/Experimental Model, Sandra Reading Sommer

Theses and Dissertations

Legionella pneumophila was first recognized as a cause of human pneumonia in 1976 . Since then, much has been learned about the microbiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of this organism. The features which permit one strain but not another to invade human lung tissue and produce disease remain incompletely understood. This study e valuated several attributes of a virulent and an avirulent strain of L. pneumophila in an attempt to identify characteristics which would distinguish the two. Evaluation of a new medium, buffered egg yolk agar, showed that virulence was maintained after 26 passages, which was the same as the buffered …

Comparison Of Performance Of Adolescent Hearing And Hearing-Impaired Children On Metalinguistic Tasks, Julia W. Reynolds Jan 1987

Comparison Of Performance Of Adolescent Hearing And Hearing-Impaired Children On Metalinguistic Tasks, Julia W. Reynolds

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Various researchers have viewed metalinguistics as the ability to consciously reflect upon language (Van Kleeck 1984a; Franklin 1979; Cazden 1975; Dale 1976). Prior to schooling, children use language as a means of functional communication through developing an interaction with the environment. They are aware of the content of their messages but not the language they are using to communicate their ideas. The emergence of language is developed primarily through concrete operations according to Van Kleeck (1984a). However, Allan (1982) states that when children enter school and begin to read, metalinguistics is emphasized and the language evolves from an unconscious, experimental …

The Effect Of Utilization Controls On Hmo Enrollees' Health, Satisfaction With Care, And Disenrollment, Barbara Stewart Brown Jan 1987

The Effect Of Utilization Controls On Hmo Enrollees' Health, Satisfaction With Care, And Disenrollment, Barbara Stewart Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this prospective study is to examine the effects of differences in utilization controls on HMO enrollees' health, satisfaction with quality of care and access, and disenrollment. Previous studies of alternative care systems have shown that they are able to decrease costs (Luft, 1981; Anderson, Herald, Butler, Kohrman, & Morrison, 1985), but have not examined the organizational structure within the organization that oversees utilization. No prior studies have examined the effects of different types and degrees of utilization controls on the health, satisfaction, and access of enrollees.

For this investigation, Williamson's (1975) theory of organizations, transaction costs economics, …

The Implementation Of A Teacher Referral Behavioral Checklist In The Identification Of Language Processing Deficits, Barbara T. Voss Jan 1987

The Implementation Of A Teacher Referral Behavioral Checklist In The Identification Of Language Processing Deficits, Barbara T. Voss

Masters Theses

The identification of language processing deficits has been acknowledged as a difficult task for the speech/language clinician. The literature has cited certain observable behaviors associated with language processing deficits, but these behaviors are often subtle enough to escape detection during routine speech and language screenings. Therefore, many language processing deficits are not identified until after the children have begun to experience academic struggle and/or failure. Several authors (Chalfant & Foster, 1974; Shepherd, 1982; Wiig & Semel, 1980) have suggested that classroom teachers may be useful in aiding speech/language pathologists in identifying these deficits. The purpose of this study was to …

A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke Jan 1987

A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke

Masters Theses

Current literature in the field of communication disorders suggests that traditional norm-referenced tests may yield erroneous or misleading information regarding a child's level of language acquisition. Additional research suggests that the most valid and reliable technique for determining a client's level of linguistic expertise is language sampling and analysis. Language sampling and analysis has traditionally been rejected as a means of evaluation, especially for the school-age child, due to the length of time necessary to complete such analyses. In recent years, language sampling and analysis techniques have been redesigned as computer software application programs. Computer software application programs may significantly …

Repetitions In The Speech Of Normal Two Year Old Males, Stephanie Herrick Jan 1987

Repetitions In The Speech Of Normal Two Year Old Males, Stephanie Herrick

Dissertations and Theses

Development of fluency has always been an important focus of stuttering research. However, to date there are no standardized norms on the development of fluency. Reliable and valid information regarding the normal development of fluency is necessary in order to deferentially diagnose normal disfluency from incipient stuttering. Establishment of norms for part-word repetitions is especially important since this type of disfluency has traditionally been considered an indicator of early stuttering. The present study sought to contribute to the investigation of the development of fluency by examining the frequency of occurrence of repetitions in 30- to 36-month-old males.
