Changes In The Cant Of The Occlusal Plane Evaluated In Treatment And Its Stability In Retention, Bruce S. Heinrich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that occlusal plane changes induced by orthodontic treatment remain stable during retention, and to show that the occlusal plane cant is related to facial type and occlusal classification.
A comparison of facial type, occlusal classification, extraction status, and growth status was provided. The sample consisted of pretreatment, posttreatment, and postretention cephalometric radiographs of 156 orthodontic cases from the records of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. Changes in the cant of the occlusal plane were evaluated by the Frankfort horizontal to occlusal plane angle.
Results showed that …
The Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Adherence To An Exercise Program Among College Students, Mark Robert Dean
The Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Adherence To An Exercise Program Among College Students, Mark Robert Dean
Dissertations
Though investigative studies have identified the many benefits of aerobic exercise for both biological and behavioral health, only a small percentage of individuals maintain regular exercise. Team or group exercise programs report higher participation rates, but studies of individually prescribed exercise programs typically report problems of compliance and attrition. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions--including the provision of course bonus points, cash lottery, and partner assignment--designed to increase exercise compliance among college students. Thirty-two student volunteers reporting "no current exercise" were randomly assigned to either the "partner" or the "individual" exercise group. …

The Regulation Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation During The Differentiation Of A Human Leukemia, David Alan Frank
The Regulation Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation During The Differentiation Of A Human Leukemia, David Alan Frank
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells are an excellent model system for studying hematopoietic differentiation. This study sought to determine how tyrosine phosphorylation and the enzymes which regulate it are controlled during HL-60 differentiation.HL-60 cells normally contain about 1.5% of their phosphoaminoacids as phosphotyrosine. Upon granulocytic differentiation, phosphotyrosine content decreases to 0.1 to 0.3% of phosphoaminoacids. HL-60 cells possess a tyrosine kinase activity located in the particulate fraction which can phosphorylate a number of tyrosine-containing substrates in a time- and temperature-dependent fashion. It has a k$\sb{\rm m}$ for ATP of about 20 uM, a pH optimum of 6.4, and a preference for …

Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews
Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Polyoxyinethylene (Delrin) is a polyacetyl homopolymer which has been used successfully in many orthopedic joint replacements. To determine histologic host response to Delrin as a temporomandibular joint condylar replacement condyles were removed from ten fully mature macaca fasicularis monkeys. The condyles were replaced with a total prosthetic Delrin condyle attached to a titanium mesh. Specimens obtained at one, two, and six months indicated total acceptance of the Delrin, remodeling of the glenoid fossa and formation of bone between the middle cranial fossa and the roof of the glenoid fossa. These findings would indicate Delrin is a viable option for condylar …

Guilt and rigidity of conscience were measured by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.
Object relations theories of the origins of guilt were examined along with the relationship between object relations …
Fasting Plasma Amino Acids In Relation To Serum Lipids In Human Male Subjects, Helen G. Mendiola
Fasting Plasma Amino Acids In Relation To Serum Lipids In Human Male Subjects, Helen G. Mendiola
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The association of fasting plasma amino acids with serum lipids was studied in 23 healthy human male subjects with ages ranging from 31 to 62 years (45±9, mean± SD). There were 12 normocholesterolemic (serum cholesterol = 183±17 mg/dL) and 11 hypercholesterolemic (271±27 mg/dL) subjects. Venous blood samples were drawn three times at weekly intervals. Plasma amino acids were determined by ion-exchange chromatography, and serum cholesterol and triglycerides by enzymatic methods. Hypercholesterolemic subjects had significantly higher lysine and lower serine levels than normocholesterolemic subjects (p < .05). Serum cholesterol levels were positively correlated with plasma levels of lysine, ornithine and the lysine/arginine ratio (p < .04); and negatively correlated with phenylalanine and urea (p < .05). Serum triglyceride levels were positively correlated with plasma levels of lysine, glutamic acid, and valine (p <. 02); and negatively correlated with serine, glutamine, and asparagine (p < .04). These results add support to the hypothesis that specific plasma amino acids are associated with the metabolism of serum lipids.
