The Effect Of Pedal Frequency And Resistance On Oxygen Consumption During Bicycle Ergometer Work In College Females, Sue Joseph Joslyn
The Effect Of Pedal Frequency And Resistance On Oxygen Consumption During Bicycle Ergometer Work In College Females, Sue Joseph Joslyn
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Total workload on a bicycle ergometer is determined by the amount of resistance and the pedal frequency. Predicting oxygen consumption on a bicycle ergometer is currently based on total workload being performed, regardless of resistance and pedal frequency. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pedal frequency and resistance on oxygen consumption at constant workloads during bicycle ergometer work in college-age females. It was hypothesized that changes in pedal frequency and resistance would cause significant differences in oxygen consumption at a constant workload.
Fourteen healthv, untrained females, age 19 to 22, performed maximal oxygen consumption tests …
The Role Of The Central Nervous System In The Hypotensive Action Of Atenolol, Amy Kathryn Adams
The Role Of The Central Nervous System In The Hypotensive Action Of Atenolol, Amy Kathryn Adams
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The contribution of the central nervous system to the hypotensive action of atenolol was examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats and normotensive dogs. In the rat, atenolol produced a hypotensive response which was stereoselective for the -isomer after both central and peripheral administration. In addition, 10 µg -atenolol administered intra-cisternally produced a hypotensive response not observed after intravenous administration of the same dose. The hypotensive action of atenolol was further examined using a method developed for the quantitation of atenolol in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of dogs. Atenolol rapidly entered the CSF after intravenous administration, producing a hypotensive response in …

The Effect Of A Balanced Amino Acid Infusion On Hepatic Regeneration In Rats, Robert Arthur Anstadt
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The efficacy of a balanced amino acid infusion on recovery from temporary hepatic insufficiency and its effect on plasma ammonia levels in partially hepatectomized rats were studied.
Polyethylene implant buttons were developed to secure animals to the infusion apparatus. Rats under went jugular vein cannulation, and 70% partial hepatectomy. Test solutions were continuously infused (30 ml/d). Plasma samples were taken through the jugular vein cannula and analyzed for bilirubin concentration, ammonia concentration, LDH activity, and GPT activity.
LDH and bilirubin results were inconclusive. Results from GPT activity assays suggest that both Freamine III and the balanced formula provided injured hepatocytes …
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Substance Abuse Awareness And Prevention Program Developed For Use With University-Level Varsity Student-Athletes, Robert Joseph Marcello
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Substance Abuse Awareness And Prevention Program Developed For Use With University-Level Varsity Student-Athletes, Robert Joseph Marcello
Theses and Dissertations
Substance abuse problems affect all segments of society including collegiate athletics. Drug testing programs are viewed as one method of combating this problem, however, more emphasis should be placed upon developing effective prevention programs. Towards this end, the first purpose of this study was to draw from available literature to design a prevention program which would cater to the specific needs of student- athletes. The position is taken that since multiple factors such as genetic predisposition, the pharmacological properties of various substances, psychological variables, and environmental/socio-cultural influences are implicated in the etiology of substance abuse difficulties, multi-focused/broad-spectrum intervention programs would …

Influence Of Stellate Ganglion Stimulation On Morphology Of Alveolar Type Ii Cells, Lori Ann Alexander
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research provides ultrastructural information regarding pulmonary surfactant secretion from stimulation of adrenergic pathways to the lung via the stellate ganglion. This information will help clarify the important role of the sympathetic nervous system in surfactant disorders. It also provides insight into sympathetic mechanisms causing surfactant derangement in adult and infant respiratory distress syndromes (RDS). Basic cellular mechanisms of surfactant metabolism, including synthesis and packaging in lamellar bodies, were studied. Results shed light on these basic processes of lung cell function.
The results of this study provide new avenues for studying a problem in health care that has long resisted …

The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds
The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds
Masters Theses
Apnea, a prolonged cessation of breathing, is commonly seen in premature infants. This condition, in its severest form, can be lethal and is a suspected cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Sometimes referred to as apnea of prematurity, recurrent apnea is presently being treated with respiratory stimulants known as methylxanthines (MX) such as theophylline and caffeine. The benefits of MXs are accompanied by central nervous system stimulation and cardiostimulation which may be detrimental to a premature infant. Theophylline (1,3-diMX) has been shown to produce some of its effects by antagonizing endogenous adenosine. Another xanthine, enprofylline (3-propylxanthine), is presently being …

The Effects Of Xanthine And Adenosine Analogs On Rat Pup Diaphragmatic Contractility, Liam C. Farrell
The Effects Of Xanthine And Adenosine Analogs On Rat Pup Diaphragmatic Contractility, Liam C. Farrell
Masters Theses
Methylxanthines are commonly used in the treatment of respiratory disorders such as asthma, apnea of prematurity and Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Recently, certain methylxanthines have been found to potentiate the contraction of the diaphragm and increase contraction strength of the fatigued diaphragm. The mechanism of action of the methylxanthines is unknown. Three theories have been proposed but each has its supportive and negative points. One theory is that methylxanthines inhibit cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) which facilitates contraction by increasing cyclic AMP levels in the cell. Another theory is that methylxanthines antagonize adenosine, thus blocking the adenosine-induced inhibition of contraction. The third theory …

Family Problems In The Background Of Mental Health Professionals, Linda Elaine Mccarter
Family Problems In The Background Of Mental Health Professionals, Linda Elaine Mccarter
Masters Theses
It has been proposed by some that students choose to study in mental health related fields in an effort to find solutions for their own personal emotional or family problems. Some believe that those who assumed or were assigned a family role of the good or parentified child (a role which requires that the needs of others be placed ahead of one's own) are over-represented among mental health professionals. Others contend that there are no significant differences in family background between psychotherapists and other individuals with a similar level of education. Little empirical investigation has addressed these issues. Studies which …

Effect Of Proximal Thermal/Pressure Cutaneous Stimulation On The Discomfort Of Intramuscular Injection, Michael Edward Desrocher
Masters Theses
The discomfort from receiving an intramuscular injection is pain that may be reduced by proper nursing intervention if the gate control theory is applied. A group of 71 adult preoperative patients were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The experimental group received a warm (43.5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C), 800 gram pack proximal to the site of injection. The control and experimental group scores were compared using a Mann-Whitney U test of significance for the intervention. The intervention was not significant in reducing the discomfort from an intramuscular injection at the.05 level.
Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy
Theses and Dissertations
An original HPLC assay was developed for pyrimethamine (PYR) in plasma, RBCs, and buffer for the purpose of studying its plasma protein binding and RBC partitioning.
Equilibrium dialysis (ED) was used to study protein binding. Isotonic phosphate buffer used in ED did not prevent small volume shifts. The pH of the plasma affected the protein binding of PYR although it was not significant for the comparison of binding at pH 7.4 vs. 8.0. PYR at 1000 ng/ml averaged 93.1% bound to plasma proteins. Binding to pure human albumin was 86.5% at lower levels of albumin and PYR (350 ng/ml). There …
