Chromatographic And Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Bradykinin Related Arginyl Peptides And Other Studies, Kevin Dale Ballard Jan 1988

Chromatographic And Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Bradykinin Related Arginyl Peptides And Other Studies, Kevin Dale Ballard

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Dimethylpyrimidylornithyl-N-trifluoroethyl-O-TBDMS (DMPO-N-TFE-O-TBDMS) polyaminoalcohol derivatives of arginyl peptides were evaluated for their utility in peptide analysis by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These derivatives were hydrolytically stable and sufficiently volatile for capillary GC-MS analysis of low nanomole amounts of peptides as large as RPPGF. Complete amino acid sequence information was generated under electron impact ionization conditions, including several ions diagnostic for arginine residues, with molecular weight information imparted by the [M-15]+ and [M-57]+ pair of ions characteristic of TBDMS derivatives. Analysis of the sequential intermediate derivatives by FAB-MS facilitated optimization of problematic derivatization steps. As little as 20 picomoles of peptide …

Use Of Circadian Rhythms To Screen For Fever: A Replication, Michele S. Heckman Jan 1988

Use Of Circadian Rhythms To Screen For Fever: A Replication, Michele S. Heckman

Masters Theses

There are inconsistent guidelines for, and consequently, inconsistent practice in the screening of hospitalized adults for fever. Using the predictive knowledge of circadian thermal rhythms, the purposes of this study were to identify (1) the hour of the day in which most fevers occurred and (2) the necessary frequency of measurement to detect fever. The sample consisted of 35 subjects, ages 22-62. Temperatures were measured at 6 p.m., 10 p.m., 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. for 24 hours. Eighteen (51.42%) of the 35 subjects had fevers during the 24-hour measurement period. Fourteen (77.78%) initial fevers were …

Evaluating Cholesterol Screening In A Community Pharmacy, Osama Mohamed Ibrahim

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the role of the community pharmacist in screening, identifying, and referring ambulatory patients with high total blood cholesterol (TBC) in a community pharmacy. Fifty seven patients, out of 241 initially screened individuals, met the study inclusion criteria and were accepted into this study. Of these 57 patients, 51 patients completed the six month study period. The normal population group consisted of 164 participants with TBC < 200 mgjdL at the initial cholesterol testing (visit 1). The drop out group represented six patients who failed to continue attending the two follow up tests (visit 2 and 3). For screening purposes, a non-fasting whole blood sample was used to measure TBC using the Boehringer Mannheim Reflotron analyzer.

The project was evaluated based on mean TBC levels obtained during the initial screening and the two follow up tests, pre-test and post-test scores, behavior and …

Possible Interference By Common Odoriferous Foodstuffs In The Determination Of Breath-Alcohol Content Using The Intoxilyzer 4011as, Gail Eileen Jones Jan 1988

Possible Interference By Common Odoriferous Foodstuffs In The Determination Of Breath-Alcohol Content Using The Intoxilyzer 4011as, Gail Eileen Jones

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

However, interferences by inhaled volatile compounds are not the aim of the present study. The objective of this report is to determine if common food stuffs would cause an interference with the CMI Intoxilyzer. It has been theorized that if one has been eating while drinking alcoholic beverages, the food might cause an elevated breath-alcohol test result. Odorous foods were chosen on the theory that if it could be smelled on one's breath, it would perhaps elicit a reading on the instrument. The list of foods was further narrowed to those commonly found in eating and drinking establishments (i.e. pizza …

The Efficacy Of Visual Telephony As A Means Of Social Support In Socially Isolated Nuring Home Residents, Tamera L. Elkins Jan 1988

The Efficacy Of Visual Telephony As A Means Of Social Support In Socially Isolated Nuring Home Residents, Tamera L. Elkins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Nursing home residents often experience loneliness and social isolation. Research indicates that visitation via the telephone can decrease feelings of social isolation and loneliness. The purpose of this study was to introduce visual images to the telephone conversations of this population. It was hypothesized that the residents receiving this intervention would evidence decreased levels of loneliness and a greater sense of social support. This hypothesis was not supported by the data; however, emotional and social loneliness scores did show positive trends that may have been due to the intervention.

The Stress Buffering Effects Of Positive Life Events And Personality (Hardiness) In Undergraduates With Dental Anxiety, Janette Louise Seville Jan 1988

The Stress Buffering Effects Of Positive Life Events And Personality (Hardiness) In Undergraduates With Dental Anxiety, Janette Louise Seville

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have independently identified positive life events and the hardy personality as variables that reduce the influence of life stress on physical or paychological disturbance. The present study investigates the possible stress buffering effects of hardiness and positive events. Seventy-five undergraduates, identified as having dental anxiety, were randomly assigned to one of five film groups. Groups viewed either a positive film, a negative film, both films (in one of two sequences), or no film. Dependent measures of dental anxiety. positive affect, negative affect, and heart rate were observed. Multiple tests of a priori hypotheses yielded partial support for the …
