Nursing And Health Care In Jacksonville, Florida, 1900-1930, Linda Emerson Sabin Jan 1988

Nursing And Health Care In Jacksonville, Florida, 1900-1930, Linda Emerson Sabin

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the development of nursing as a vocation, in the early twentieth century, within the context of a growing southern city and an evolving health care system. Nursing advanced from a domestic service to a recognized vocation during this era. An extensive survey of historical and nursing literature revealed few studies which focus on nursing and health care in an urban context. Those studies identified gave only brief glimpses of nurses and focus on northern cities. This investigation aims to add a southern chapter to the history of nursing and health care in urban settings.

New Antimuscarinic Agents For Improved Treatment Of Poisoning By Cholinesterase Inhibitors, Robert Lee Hudkins Jan 1988

New Antimuscarinic Agents For Improved Treatment Of Poisoning By Cholinesterase Inhibitors, Robert Lee Hudkins

Theses and Dissertations

Poisoning by organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitors results in a rapid rise in acetylcholine (ACh) in the synapse and many pronounced pharmacological effects in numerous tissues in the body. The treatment for organophosphorus poisoning involves administration of a cholinesterase—reactivating oxime to restore the activity of the cholinesterase and an antimuscarinic agent to block the response to the excess ACh. Presently atropine is the standard antimuscarinic agent used clinically as an antidote. This research was directed toward finding an antimuscarinic agent better than atropine as an antidote.

Since caramiphen and aprophen have been reported to be effective antidotes we synthesized numerous structural variations …

Differences between the performance of hospitals acquired by for-profit and not-for-profit multihospital systems were examined as well. with regard to the latter, major findings revealed both for-profit and not-for-profit multihospital systems increased debt in acquired hospitals and made improvements to plant and equipment. For-profit multihospital systems additionally increased …

Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler Jan 1988

Glucocorticoid-Responsive Hepatic Cytochromes P-450 In The Rat: Multiplicity And Differential Regulation, Keith Alan Hostetler

Theses and Dissertations

The multiplicity of glucocorticoid-responsive hepatic cytochromes P-450 in the rat was investigated by developing a series of monoclonal antibody probes directed against purified steroid-inducible isozymes from the rat (P-450p) and man (HLp). Two antibodies, termed 1G8 and 13-7-10, showed unique specificity for purified cytochromes P-450 upon immunoblot analyses. These antibodies were further characterized in terms of their reactivity toward proteins in liver microsomes from untreated and xenobiotic-treated rats. Three P-450p-related proteins were identified using 1G8 and 13-7-10 to monitor the expression of P-450p family subtypes. In untreated rats, members of this family exhibited sex-specific expression. Treatment with various chemicals resulted …

Thirty female ASA I and ASA II patients were randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 16) or a treatment group (n = 14). Those patients in the treatment group received pre-emergence gastric aspiration with a suction catheter; those patients in the control group did not. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was determined at various time intervals. Data were analyzed using Student's t test and the Chi-square statistic. Results indicated that there …

The Production And Transcription Of Syllabic Stress In Young Children, Diane Marie Brammer Jan 1988

The Production And Transcription Of Syllabic Stress In Young Children, Diane Marie Brammer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The reliability of listeners' transcription of young children's syllable stress has not been the focus of any experimental study. Goffman (1985) reported poor reliability between listeners' judgments of syllable stress productions by two-year-old children. Two possible reasons for the poor reliability were hypothesized. First, the children may not have been consistently altering the acoustic parameters which signal stress (fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration). Second, listeners may have focused upon different acoustic parameters when making their judgments. The purpose of the present two-part study was to initiate the study of adult transcription of children's production of stress in words. Experiment I …

Twenty-four volunteers, ages 20 to 49, were assigned to four treatment conditions: (a) combination discussion and film group, (b) discussion only group, (c) film only group, and (d) delayed treatment control group. It was hypothesized that subjects receiving treatment would report greater improvement than control subjects on dependent variables (sexual satisfaction, orgasm frequency, body image, self-esteem, sexual attitudes, and sexual experiences) as measured by pre- and post-testing on the …

The Effect Of Interval And Continuous Training On Maximal Oxygen Consumption And Performance On The 1.5 Mile Run Of College Age Males And Females, Deborah Lynn White Jan 1988

The Effect Of Interval And Continuous Training On Maximal Oxygen Consumption And Performance On The 1.5 Mile Run Of College Age Males And Females, Deborah Lynn White

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Interval and continuous training and their effects on maximal oxygen consumption have been studied extensively. Virtually all of the studies reported in the literature have defined interval training as running a given distance at a maximal or near maximal intensity with intervening [sic] rest periods. This study defined interval training as running a given distance at a submaximal intensity of 85% of the maximum heart rate. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of interval and continuous training on the maximal oxygen consumption, performance on a 1.5 mile run, and body composition of college age males and …

Validation Of A One-Mile Test As A Measure Of Maximum Oxygen Consumption For Males Aged 16-18 Years, Andrew John Myers Jan 1988

Validation Of A One-Mile Test As A Measure Of Maximum Oxygen Consumption For Males Aged 16-18 Years, Andrew John Myers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Maximum oxygen consumption is considered to be the best indicator of the aerobic power of the cardiorespiratory system (Patton, Vogel, & Mello, 1982). The direct measure of maximum oxygen consumption requires a well-equipped laboratory, trained personnel, and a high degree of subject motivation and effort. These problems have led to attempts to develop indirect methods for estimating maximal oxygen consumption. The purpose of this study was to validate an indirect method for measuring maximum oxygen consumption. Specifically, the purpose was to validate a one-mile walk test as a measure of maximum oxygen consumption for males aged 16-18 years. Twenty-six male …

Evidence For Classical Projection Or Experimental Artifact: A Failure To Replicate, Phillip Wayne Green Dec 1987

Evidence For Classical Projection Or Experimental Artifact: A Failure To Replicate, Phillip Wayne Green

Graduate Theses

Classical, or Freudian projection is a concept which has been widely accepted by psychiatrists and clinical psychologists despite the lack of conclusive empirical evidence supporting its existence. A recent study using the psychodynamic activation technique resulted in evidence which would support classical projection. The present study utilized the same psychodynamic activation procedure using slightly different stimuli. This study resulted in evidence which would not support the concept of classical projection.

The Effects Of Unilateral Brain Damage On Analogical Reasoning By Stroke Patients, Letitia Lynn Gillespie Dec 1987

The Effects Of Unilateral Brain Damage On Analogical Reasoning By Stroke Patients, Letitia Lynn Gillespie

Masters Theses

This study examined the ability of individuals with unilateral left hemisphere damage (LHD) and right hemisphere damage (RHD) to complete multiple modality analogy tasks. Four groups, for a total of 46 subjects--12 LHD patients, 8 RHD patients, 20 child control subjects, and 6 adult control subjects--performed word, figure, and picture analogies. The combined non brain damaged control groups performed significantly better than the combined brain damaged experimental groups on the combined analogy tasks. No significant difference was found between the LHD and RHD groups on the combined analogy tasks. The modalities of analogical reasoning tasks did not differentially affect the …

Congruence Between Type Of Activity And Volition And Its Relationship To Life Satisfaction In Nursing Home Residents, David De Noble Dec 1987

Congruence Between Type Of Activity And Volition And Its Relationship To Life Satisfaction In Nursing Home Residents, David De Noble

Masters Theses

This study examines the relationship between life satisfaction and the volition subsystem of 32 older adults who reside in nursing homes. Specifically, it attempts to measure congruence or the perception of the individual that the inherent characteristics of an activity "fit" his or her sense of personal causation, values and interests. The study examines the relationship between this congruence and life satisfaction.

Results of the study identified positive correlations between congruence and life satisfaction. Correlations between congruence of volition subsystem components and activity were at a statistically significant level (p <.05) for personal causation, values and total volition. Correlations between congruence of volition subsystem components and some specific activities were also found.

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Women And Depression, Denise Twohey Dec 1987

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Women And Depression, Denise Twohey

Dissertations

There is increasing evidence that new conceptualizations of women's development are leading to important revisions in current psychological theories and practices. In this study, these theories were examined to enhance the treatment of depressed women. Toward this end, a phenomenological laboratory was established consisting of an 11-week psychotherapy group for depressed women which was videotaped and observed by six trained evaluators.

The primary outcome was the development of a conceptual framework for understanding women and their experience of depression. The framework was created from the identification of five content themes which emerged as a synthesis of the observations made by …
