From 'The Help Of Grave And Modest Women' To 'The Care Of Men Of Sense': The Transition From Female Midwifery To Male Obstetrics In Early Modern England, Karen L. Smith Adams Mar 1988

From 'The Help Of Grave And Modest Women' To 'The Care Of Men Of Sense': The Transition From Female Midwifery To Male Obstetrics In Early Modern England, Karen L. Smith Adams

Dissertations and Theses

Until the sixteenth century, childbirth in England was the exclusive domain of women and was orchestrated by the female midwife. By the end of the seventeenth century, university-educated and church-approved male physicians were systematically beginning to usurp the midwife's role in the lying-in room and to gradually assume authority and power over the process of childbirth. Ultimately doctor-dominated childbirth threatened, and in some places accomplished, the displacement of the midwife. No one factor was responsible for the shift in delivery room personnel nor was the transition from female midwives to male obstetricians a "natural" one. This thesis looks at three …

A Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing-Protective Devices, Lois Jeanne Gaier Feb 1988

A Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing-Protective Devices, Lois Jeanne Gaier

Dissertations and Theses

To effectively implement an occupational hearing conservation program, employers must know the amount of attenuation (noise reduction) provided by the hearing protective devices used by their employees. Currently standardized test methods, performed under laboratory conditions, cannot be easily implemented in industrial settings, and previously proposed field methods have depended upon the use of special headphones which are not typically available in the workplace. These problems have led many occupational hearing conservationists to use standard audiometric headphones to evaluate the attenuation provided to employees using insert-type hearing-protective devices. There has, however, been little research into the validity of using standard audiometric …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of ambulatory services by the health maintenance organization of Florida (HMO), independent practice association (IPA) model, was compared to a fee-for-service population. Each randomly selected group consisted of 250 patients being cared for by the same providers, at the same clinic, during the calendar year 1986. Demographic and clinical data was gathered from the office charts. Frequencies were evaluated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and t-tests were run to substantiate variance at the 0.05 level of confidence. The HMO group is a younger population (t = 0.017), and the males are responsible for the increased …

Modeling The Determinants Of Hospital Mortality, Abdolmohsin S. Al-Haider

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined hospital characteristics that affected the differential in hospital mortality, while controlling for the effect of community attributes. Analytical models for the determinants of hospital mortality were formulated and validated through an empirical examination of 243 hospitals that had higher or lower mortality rates than expected for Medicare beneficiaries. The dependent variable for this study was death rates for 1984 Medicare patients in united states hospitals released in 1986 by the Health Care Financing Administration.

Structural equation models that portray the causal relation between organizational constructs and hospital mortality rate were formulated. This causal model was empirically validated. …

The Impact Of Evaluation Feedback On Affective And Behavioural Reactions, Kathleen Joy Kitching Jan 1988

The Impact Of Evaluation Feedback On Affective And Behavioural Reactions, Kathleen Joy Kitching

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A study was conducted to examine the impact of outcome (success or failure) and attribution information cues (none, internal, external) on affective and behavioural reactions to performance feedback. Following the theorizing of Weiner, Russell, and Lerman (1978, 1979) and Liden and Mitchell (1985), it was predicted that the outcome manipulation would determine a global affective reaction and that the attribution information cues manipulation would polarize these reactions. Sixty university undergraduate students were randomly assigned to success of failure on a practice and final creativity test and were induced to attribute their performance to internal or external causes depending on attribution …

Where Have All The Nurses Gone? The Continuing Saga Of The Nursing Shortage, Deborah R. Mcfarland

Theses

This paper examines the issues which have encompassed the nursing profession for many years, thus making it a difficult career in which to attract and retain members. The nursing shortage, many say, has returned, but did it really go away? The shortage experienced in the 1970's was coupled with high admission rates and high employee turnover causing a shortage of nurses, particularly experienced ones. Then, hospitals faced the emergence of the federal government making major changes in reimbursement to hospitals. This caused a major shift in the cash flow system of hospitals. Also, costs were no longer reimbursed on a …

Identification Of The Presence Of The Restoration Concept In Seventh-Day Adventist Nursing Programs In The United States, L. Phil Hunt

Dissertations

Problem. In 1976 Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) nursing educational leaders adopted a statement of philosophy and goals that incorporated the concept of restoring humans to God's image. Although Adventist education was founded upon restoration themes, no empirical evidence indicates that nursing faculty and students perceive restoration as important or evident in nursing education today. It was the purpose of this study to determine the extent to which the concept of restoration is manifested in SDA nursing programs in the United States.

Method. Ten summary statements provide a definition of restoration consistent with the beliefs and teachings of the SDA church. An …

Characterization Of The K Variant Of Encephalomyocarditis Virus, Delie Roselyn Cerutis Jan 1988

Characterization Of The K Variant Of Encephalomyocarditis Virus, Delie Roselyn Cerutis

Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Serologically identical variants of encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus produce different disease syndromes in mice. For instance, in ICR Swiss male mice, the B variant (EMC-B) produces no overt illness, EMC-MM produces death accompanied by eevere neurological signs, and EMC-0 destroys beta cells, thus producing a disease syndrome that resembles insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. These apparently identical viruses provide excellent models to investigate the molecular basis of disease. Recently, we isolated a lethal variant (EMC-K) from the EMC-B virus stock and compared its characteristics to three other EMC virus variants, EMC-B, D, and MM. The present study was done to determine (i) the …
