Catecholamine Training Effects From Exercise Programs: A Bridge To Exercise-Temperament Relationships, Richard A. Dienstbier, Robert L. Laguardia,, Marc Barnes, Gerald Tharp, Richard J. Schmidt Oct 1987

Catecholamine Training Effects From Exercise Programs: A Bridge To Exercise-Temperament Relationships, Richard A. Dienstbier, Robert L. Laguardia,, Marc Barnes, Gerald Tharp, Richard J. Schmidt

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three studies were conducted to test whether a catecholamine training effect results from a long-term aerobic exercise program. Study 1 showed significant increases in urinary adrenaline and noradrenaline following moderate mental stress/challenge for male aerobics subjects after a semester of training. Control groups of nonexercisers and continuously in-condition marathoners showed no comparable pre- to post semester catecholamine increases. Male and female Aerobics subjects were contrasted with nonexercisers across a semester in Study 2; the hypothesis was confirmed that postsemester increases in catecholamines occurred only following an episode of mental challenges/stress, and not following base-rate-rest conditions. Under conditions of more active …

The Effect Of Prospective Payment System On Coding Practices In Kentucky Hospitals, Doris Thayer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the prospective payment system on coding practices, resource allocations, quantitative and quantitative standards and organizational structure in medical record departments of 108 acute care, general medical and surgical hospitals in Kentucky.

The study results revealed changes in coding practices consistent with the demand under the prospective payment system for more timely, complete and accurate information for billing purposes. Additionally, accurate data were needed to establish a reliable case-mix data base upon which future reimbursement formulas would be based. Increases in human and capital resources, especially in the area of …

Housing For The Chronically Mentally Disabled: Part I—Conceptual Framework And Social Context, G. Brent Hall, Geoffrey Nelson Oct 1987

Housing For The Chronically Mentally Disabled: Part I—Conceptual Framework And Social Context, G. Brent Hall, Geoffrey Nelson

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper reviews research concerned with community housing programs for the chronically mentally disabled (CMD). In the first section, the ecological perspective is presented as a conceptual framework for the study of housing for the CMD. Several key concepts, such as the least restrictive environment, normalization, and integration, are tied into the ecological perspective. In the second section, literature on three dimensions of the social context of housing for the CMD is reviewed: (a) the geo-social environment; (b) responses from informal social systems; and (c) the planning, policy, and service delivery system. This literature is summarized within the framework of …

Housing For The Chronically Mentally Disabled: Part Ii—Process And Outcome, Geoffrey Nelson, Heather Smith Fowler

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper reviews process and outcome research on community housing programs for the chronically mentally disabled. Several methods for conceptualizing and assessing housing environments are presented, and pertinent literature on each method is then reviewed. Next, research on the impact of various types of housing programs on clients’ adaptation is reviewed. Methodological problems in both the process and outcome research are highlighted, and directions for future research are suggested. It is concluded that future research requires an integration of the process and outcome findings and methods to ascertain how different program characteristics are related to different facets of adaptation for …

Isolation Of A Cdna Clone For The Human Laminin-B1 Chain And Its Gene Localization, Michael Jaye, William Modi, George A. Ricca, Robert Mudd, Inc-Ming Chiu, Stephen J. O'Brien, William N. Drohan

Biology Faculty Articles

A cDNA clone encoding the B1 chain of human laminin has been isolated from a human endothelial cell cDNA library. With use of this probe and a panel of rodent/human somatic-cell hybrids and in situ hybridization, the gene for the human laminin-B1 chain has been localized to chromosome 7, band q31.

Congruence Between Objective And Self-Report Data In A Sample Of Young Adolescents, Lisa J. Crockett, John E. Schulenberg, Anne C. Petersen Oct 1987

Congruence Between Objective And Self-Report Data In A Sample Of Young Adolescents, Lisa J. Crockett, John E. Schulenberg, Anne C. Petersen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Methodology texts frequently emphasize the limitations of self-report measures. Empirical information on the validity of self-report data, however, tends to be limited to particular topics and populations. This paper examines the validity of self-report data in a sample of young adolescents for whom objective and self-report data were available on course grades, height, and weight. A comparison of the two kinds of data generally supported the validity of the self-reports, although there was some evidence of response effects. It was concluded that while young adolescents exhibit some systematic errors in reporting, self-reports can provide a useful substitute for some kinds …

Women And Aids: The Future Is Grim, Mary E. Guinan, Ann Hardy Sep 1987

Women And Aids: The Future Is Grim, Mary E. Guinan, Ann Hardy

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Recently, we analyzed the reported cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in women in the United States.1 We found two areas of great concern: first, women are more likely than men to acquire AIDS through heterosexual intercourse, and second, women are the source of disease for about 80% of children with AIDS. In this column we will discuss the source and distribution of AIDS in women, and in a future piece we will discuss women as the source of infection for pediatric AIDS cases.

Identification Of A Complex Associated With Processing And Polyadenylation In Vitro Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Thymidine Kinase Precursor Rna., Fang Zhang, Charles N. Cole Sep 1987

Identification Of A Complex Associated With Processing And Polyadenylation In Vitro Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Thymidine Kinase Precursor Rna., Fang Zhang, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Cleavage and polyadenylation of substrate RNAs containing the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) thymidine kinase (tk) gene polyadenylation signal region were examined in HeLa cell nuclear extract. 3'-End RNA processing was accurate and efficient and required ATP and Mg2+. Cleavage, but not polyadenylation, occurred in the presence of EDTA or when ATP was replaced with 3' dATP (cordycepin) or AMP(CH2)PP, a nonhydrolyzable analog of ATP. Processing in vitro and in vivo showed the same signal element requirements: a series of substrates containing linker scanning, internal deletion, and small insertion mutations was processed with the same relative efficiencies and at …

Tubulin Interaction With Kinetochore Proteins: Analysis By In Vitro Assembly And Chemical Cross-Linking, R. D. Balczon, B. R. Brinkley Aug 1987

Tubulin Interaction With Kinetochore Proteins: Analysis By In Vitro Assembly And Chemical Cross-Linking, R. D. Balczon, B. R. Brinkley

University Faculty and Staff Publications

The sera from patients with the CREST (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasia) variation of the autoimmune disease scleroderma contain autoantibodies that specifically recognize the kinetochore by immunofluorescence. Two major antigens of molecular masses 18 and 80 kD are consistently identified by Western blotting of proteins of isolated chromosomes using CREST sera. In this paper, the possible roles that these two proteins play in the interaction of metaphase chromosomes with tubulin and microtubules are examined using two different procedures. In one set of experiments. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) chromosomes were extracted with 1-2 M NaCl before incubating with phosphocellulose-purified …

Depression In Caregivers Of Alzheimer’S Patients: Concurrent Validity Of Two Depression Scales, Joyce Sutton Aug 1987

Depression In Caregivers Of Alzheimer’S Patients: Concurrent Validity Of Two Depression Scales, Joyce Sutton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Forty-five male and female family caregivers of institutionalized and noninstitutionalized Alzheimer’s Disease patients were assessed for depression, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Internal consistency and concurrent validity for the BDI and GDS were acceptable, based on item-total correlation, coefficient alphas, and a Pearson’s Product-moment correlation. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was carried out to determine which variables predict depression in Alzheimer’s caregivers. Using the traditional cut-off score of 11 for each scale, it was found that 42% were depressed on the BDI, while 58% were depressed on the GDS; these rates were not significantly …

Effects Of Dietary Calcium Levels On Human Blood Pressures, Janice Mearkle Aug 1987

Effects Of Dietary Calcium Levels On Human Blood Pressures, Janice Mearkle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The prevalence of hypertension in the U.S. and similar industrialized countries continues to rise. Millions of people are affected in America alone. Usual treatment includes a low sodium diet, weight loss if needed, and drug therapy. Some health providers also encourage stress management as an adjunct to therapy. These treatments have been shown to be effective but patient compliance continues to be poor. Past research has explored the relationships between dietary calcium and hypertension and has found that there is an interaction between blood calcium levels and high blood pressure. The research reported here was a test of the relationship …
