Precious Little Guidance: Jury Instruction On Damage Awards, Edith Greene, Brian H. Bornstein Jan 2000

Precious Little Guidance: Jury Instruction On Damage Awards, Edith Greene, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Jury instructions on damage awards are notoriously vague and ambiguous. As a result, awards are sometimes unexpected and seemingly illogical. In this article, the authors argue that jury instructions regarding damages are vague because the law of damages itself is purposefully ambiguous—allowing particularized justice across a variety of different circumstances. The authors review research on comprehension and application of substantive jury instructions related to damages and on procedural variations at trial (e.g., use of preinstruction, bifurcation, blindfolding jurors to various issues, special verdict forms, caps on damages, and instruction revision) that impact the substantive instructions that jurors receive from the …

Understanding The Dynamics Of Child Maltreatment: Child Harm, Family Healing, And Public Policy (Discussant's Commentary), Ross A. Thompson Jan 2000

Understanding The Dynamics Of Child Maltreatment: Child Harm, Family Healing, And Public Policy (Discussant's Commentary), Ross A. Thompson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

For almost a half-century, the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has profiled many of the evolving themes and issues at the heart of psychology. It has also documented, less directly, changes in society. When the symposium was inaugurated in 1951, child maltreatment was a sad reality of life for many children, but it was not a topic of considerable professional attention. With the identification of the "battered child syndrome" (Kempe, Silverman, Steele, Droegemueller, & Silver, 1962) in the early 1960s, however, professional concern with the plight of abused and neglected children quickly grew. National attention to child maltreatment also increased as …

Introduction Of Motivation And Child Maltreatment: Volume 46 Of The Nebraska Symposium On Motivation, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

There are at least two great luxuries associated with being coordinator of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation. One is choosing the topic or major theme of the prestigious and influential conference. The second is selecting the speakers. It is great to sit back and think about all of the leading scholars in the field and decide who you would like to hear speak and have contribute a chapter to the volume. This 46th Annual Nebraska Symposium on Motivation brought together a distinguished panel of scholars who explored issues related to motivation and child maltreatment.

Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris Jan 2000

Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris

Graduate Research Papers

The author of this paper has addressed the significance of the development of treatment strategies to implement with African American adolescent crack addicts. An integral basis for tailoring culturally specific treatment approaches for African American adolescents relates to the unique circumstances, which may promote more extensive crack abuse by this group. Depression was the difficulty which the author chose to focus upon. Several different methods of helping these adolescents are discussed. The intervention strategies which show promise in helping African American adolescent crack addicts include: (a) Interpersonal Therapy; (b) psycho-educational programs; (c) involvement of family members in treatment; (d) use …

Existential Mental Health Implications For Kin-Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Victims, Brock K. Knoll

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to briefly outline assessment and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in afflicted individuals (i.e., care recipients [CRs]) and review relevant research concerning the effects of AD progression on caregivers (CGs) as they care for loved ones. With this background, consideration will be made of how these findings suggest relevant tenets of Existential therapy. The author will also identify implications that could be meaningful to mental health professionals in their efforts to assist CGs as they attempt to cope with the emotional impact this disease has on them during caregiving and after the eventual death …

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts Jan 2000

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts

Articles

Androgen-induced calcium fluxes and gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) were studied in three different cell types. A transient (2–3 min duration) increase in intracellular calcium levels was observed within 20–30 sec of androgen addition, which was followed by a plateau phase with steroid concentrations higher than 1 nM. The kinetics of the calcium responses were similar in immature rat Sertoli cells, which contain normal nuclear receptors; the human prostatic tumor cell line, LNCaP, which contains a mutated nuclear receptor; and the human prostatic cell line, PC3, which does not contain a nuclear receptor. The human A431 tumor cell line did …

Prevalence Of Antibody To Hepatitis E Virus Among Rodents In The United States, Michael O. Favorov, Michael Y. Kosoy, Sergei A. Tsarev, James E. Childs, Harold S. Margolis Jan 2000

Prevalence Of Antibody To Hepatitis E Virus Among Rodents In The United States, Michael O. Favorov, Michael Y. Kosoy, Sergei A. Tsarev, James E. Childs, Harold S. Margolis

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The recent identification of antibody to hepatitis E virus (HEV) in pigs, sheep, and cattle and characterization of an HEV isolated from domestic pigs suggest animal reservoirs for this virus. To investigate whether rodents might be a natural reservoir of HEV, the prevalence of anti-HEV was determined among a variety of species throughout the United States. Serum samples were obtained from 806 rodents of 26 species in 15 genera. Anti-HEV prevalence was assessed by 2 EIAs (mosaic protein- and 55-kDa protein-based), which gave concordant results. The highest prevalence of antibody was found in the genus Rattus (59.7%; 66/278). Overall, rodents …

Incidence Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Among American Indians In Oklahoma, Jennifer H. Mcquiston, Robert C. Holman, Amy V. Groom, Stephen F. Kaufman, James E. Cheek, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Althought he state of Oklahoma has traditionally reported very high incidence rates of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) cases, the incidence of RMSF among the American Indian population of the state has not been studied. The authors used data from several sources to estimate the incidence of RMSF among American Indians in Oklahoma.

Decomposition Can Harm The Accuracy Of Behavioral Frequency Reports, Robert Belli, Norbert Schwarz, Eleanor Singer, Jennifer Talarico Jan 2000

Decomposition Can Harm The Accuracy Of Behavioral Frequency Reports, Robert Belli, Norbert Schwarz, Eleanor Singer, Jennifer Talarico

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In survey research, the use of decomposition can lead to pronounced reporting errors as seen by overreporting and overall reporting error. A total of 87 subjects answered either decomposed or undecomposed questions concerning telephone calls made by them while at work. The questionnaire conditions varied the length of the reference period (1 week or 6 months), and the type of call (local or long-distance). Decomposition conditions introduced either spatial or temporal cues. In all comparisons, decomposed questions increased over- reporting bias relative to undecomposed questions. In addition, undecomposed questions with a 1-week reference period led to increased overreporting bias in …

The Skn7 Response Regulator Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Interacts With Hsf1 In Vivo And Is Required For The Induction Of Heat Shock Genes By Oxidative Stress, Desmond C. Raitt, Anthony L. Johnson, Alexander M. Erkine, Kozo Makino, Brian Morgan, David S. Gross, Leland H. Johnston Jan 2000

Johnston

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

The Skn7 response regulator has previously been shown to play a role in the induction of stress-responsive genes in yeast, e.g., in the induction of the thioredoxin gene in response to hydrogen peroxide. The yeast Heat Shock Factor, Hsf1, is central to the induction of another set of stress-inducible genes, namely the heat shock genes. These two regulatory trans-activators, Hsf1 and Skn7, share certain structural homologies, particularly in their DNA-binding domains and the presence of adjacent regions of coiled-coil structure, which are known to mediate protein–protein interactions. Here, we provide evidence that Hsf1 and Skn7 interact in vitro and …

Cell Cycle-Dependent Binding Of Yeast Heat Shock Factor To Nucleosomes, Christina Bourgeois Venturi, Alexander M. Erkine, David S. Gross Jan 2000

Cell Cycle-Dependent Binding Of Yeast Heat Shock Factor To Nucleosomes, Christina Bourgeois Venturi, Alexander M. Erkine, David S. Gross

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

In the nucleus, transcription factors must contend with the presence of chromatin in order to gain access to their cognate regulatory sequences. As most nuclear DNA is assembled into nucleosomes, activators must either invade a stable, preassembled nucleosome or preempt the formation of nucleosomes on newly replicated DNA, which is transiently free of histones. We have investigated the mechanism by which heat shock factor (HSF) binds to target nucleosomal heat shock elements (HSEs), using as our model a dinucleosomal heat shock promoter (hsp82-ΔHSE1). We find that activated HSF cannot bind a stable, sequence-positioned nucleosome in G1-arrested …

Relational Counseling, Janice E. Drury Jan 2000

Relational Counseling, Janice E. Drury

Graduate Research Papers

The author of this paper explores the relational approach to counseling and its potential benefit to clients. The relational approach, in comparison to the more traditional approach to counseling, can give the counselor an alternative framework in which to explore and understand human development and apply counseling methods. Relational theory and its application to women is specifically addressed in this paper, as this approach to counseling may better assist women to speak and be heard in a pattern that makes sense to them. The author also identifies the need for research that expands current realms of thinking in mental health …

This study investigated the effects of quantity and type of diet fed to superovulated donor heifers on molecular and metabolic indices of embryonic development. These effects included the relative abundances of mRNAs for the alpha 1 subunit of Na/K-ATPase and the antioxidant enzyme Cu/Zn-SOD, as well as pyruvate utilization in bovine morulae and blastocysts developed in vivo. Heifers were fed a daily ration of either grass silage and a citrus-beet pulp-based concentrate or grass silage and a barley-based concentrate for 116 days, both at 3 kg per day or ad libitum. In embryos derived from heifers fed the pulp-based diets, …

Healthy Families Maine: Final Evaluation Report, Erin E. Oldham Phd, Tammy Richards, Anne B. Keith Rn, Drph, C-Pnp, Julie Atkins Ma

Children, Youth, & Families

The first year's evaluation featured a process study documenting the implementation of the program at six pilot sites. The second year evaluation report followed the evolution of the Healthy Families Maine program, through both a process study and the introduction of an exploratory outcomes study.iv While the second year report focused on all of the children being served by the six Healthy Families programs, the present report is a more in-depth, longitudinal study of a group of 89 children and families served by their local Healthy Families program.
