Arginine 447 Plays A Pivotal Role In Substrate Interactions In A Neuronal Glutamate Transporter, Annie Bendahan, Ayelet Armon, Navid Madani, Michael Kavanaugh, Baruch I. Kanner

Glutamate transporters from the central nervous system play a crucial role in the clearance of the transmitter from the synaptic cleft. Glutamate is cotransported with sodium ions, and the electrogenic translocation cycle is completed by countertransport of potassium. Mutants that cannot interact with potassium are only capable of catalyzing electroneutral exchange. Here we identify a residue involved in controlling substrate recognition in the neuronal transporter EAAC-1 that transports acidic amino acids as well as cysteine. When arginine 447, a residue conserved in all glutamate transporters, is replaced by cysteine, transport of glutamate or aspartate is abolished, but sodium-dependent cysteine transport …
Erisa Health Plan Liability: Issues And Options For Reform, Karl Polzer
Erisa Health Plan Liability: Issues And Options For Reform, Karl Polzer
National Health Policy Forum
This background paper was written as congressional conferees faced the task of resolving differences between patient protection bills by the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate in late 1999. In order to discuss the principal issues facing policymakers and options for reform, it begins by describing problems raised by the federal law governing private-sector employee health plans (the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) from a consumer perspective. It then discusses approaches proposed by the Clinton administration and the House and Senate to give consumers greater ability to challenge health plan coverage decisions, focusing in particular on issues …

Sulfa Or Sulfone Prophylaxis And Geographic Region Predict Mutations In The Pneumocystis Carinii Dihydropteroate Synthase Gene, Laurence Huang, Charles B. Beard, Jennifer Creasman, Deborah A. Levy, Jeffrey S. Duchin, Sherline Lee, Norman Pieniazek, Jane L. Carter, Carlos Del Rio, David Rimland, Thomas R. Navin
Journal Articles: Epidemiology
To determine factors associated with mutations in the Pneumocystis carinii dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) gene, a prospective study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with confirmed P. carinii pneumonia was conducted in Atlanta, Seattle, and San Francisco. Clinical information was obtained from patient interview and chart abstraction. DHPS genotype was determined from DNA sequencing. Overall, 76 (68.5%) of 111 patients had a mutant DHPS genotype, including 22 (81.5%) of 27 patients from San Francisco. In multivariate analysis, sulfa or sulfone prophylaxis and study site were independent predictors of a mutant genotype. Fourteen (53.8%) of 26 patients who were newly diagnosed with …

An International Cross-Cultural Study Of The Role Of Chief Informational Officers In Healthcare, Wallace Saunders
Faculty Dissertations
The introduction and utilization of Information Systems (IS) in the hospital environment has had a significant and lasting impact on the practice of medicine. The development of this dissertation will attempt to explore a widely overlooked area: The comparison of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Aspects of CIO experiences relating to assumed roles, CIO challenges, skills, frustrations, success, failure, leadership, management, involvement and perceptions about the role of Information Technology (IT) in healthcare are discussed with a comparative global model. This study investigates the managerial roles of the Chief Information Officer based on …

Determinants Of Ceftazidime Clearance By Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration And Continuous Venovenous Hemodialysis, Gary R. Matzke, Reginald F. Frye, Melanie S. Joy, Paul M. Palevsky
Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science Publications
Although several dosage adjustment regimens have been proposed, there is little quantitative information to guide the initiation of ceftazidime therapy in patients who are receiving continuous renal replacement therapy. To determine the clearance of ceftazidime by continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) and continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD), we performed controlled clearance studies with stable hemodialysis patients with three hemofilters: a 0.6-m2 acrylonitrile copolymer (AN69; Hospal) filter, a 2.1-m2 polymethylmethacrylate filter (PMMA; Toray) filter and a 0.65-m2 polysulfone (PS; Fresenius) filter. Subjects received 1,000 mg of ceftazidime intravenously prior to the start of a clearance study. The concentration of ceftazidime in multiple plasma …

Understanding And Building Resiliency In Students Living With Parental Alcoholism: Implications And Interventions For The School Counselor, Lori K. Riley
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to examine how the strengths and positive qualities of children of alcoholics can be enhanced by counselors to promote resiliency. The author will identify typical characteristics of children who are raised by alcoholic parents and describe the short-term and long-term effects of this abuse on school-aged children and adolescents. A family systems perspective will be examined, along with a discussion of the risk these youngsters face.
A second purpose of this paper is to focus on the role of the school counselor in working with children who are living in dysfunctional situations due to …

Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble
Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble
Faculty Publications
Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. Agency leaders, community members, and substance abuse prevention advocates all …

The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James Johnstone
The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James Johnstone
Data and Test Instruments
Use of animal blood could overcome concerns of supply and disease transmission with human blood donation if immunological, microbiological and ethical barriers are overcome. Here we investigated the feasibility of using bovine red blood cells (RBC) because of possibly diminished cross-species immune reactivity and the relative ease of venous access in the cow. A group of 12 tagged Holstein cows were randomly selected from the NSAC herd for evaluation. Tests included hemagglutination, complement mediated lysis, osmotic fragility, conventional human crossmatch, an RBC absorbtion assay using ELISA, bovine blood type characterization, and human IgM and IgG (including subtypes) antibody binding. Each …
