Background/aim: Macrothrombocytopenia is an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by increased platelet size and a decreased number of circulating platelets. The membrane skeleton and the link between actin filaments of the skeleton and microtubules, which consist of alpha and beta tubulin [including the tubulin beta-1 chain (TUBB1)] heterodimers, are important for normal platelet morphology, and defects in these systems are associated with macrothrombocytopenia. Materials and methods: In this study, we sequenced the exons of the TUBB1 gene using DNA isolated from the peripheral blood samples of healthy controls (n = 47) and patients with macrothrombocytopenia (n = 37) from Turkey. The TUBB1 …

Background/aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most aggressive cancer types. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding regulatory RNAs that function posttranscriptionally. miRNA deregulation was observed in the development and progression of HCC. In this study, we aimed to investigate the expression levels of four miRNAs (mir-33a, mir-203b, mir361-3p, and mir-424) in HCC patients in comparison to healthy individuals. Materials and methods: Venous blood samples were collected from both HCC patients and healthy individuals. In order to determine the relative expression levels of mir-33a, mir-203b, mir361-3p, and hsa-mir-424 in HCC patients, probe-based quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed. The …

Background/aim: The COVID-19 infection, which started in Wuhan City, China, in December 2019, turned into a pandemic in a very short time, affecting mainly the elderly and those with serious chronic illnesses. COVID-19 infections have been observed to have a high mortality rate, especially in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Materials and methods: Forty-two patients over 18 years of age who underwent a maintenance hemodialysis program at our unit, who tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR from nasopharyngeal swabs, and/or who were observed to have disease-related signs in their CTs were included in the study. Results: In this study, 23 of …

Basal And Pentagastrin-Stimulated Calcitonin Cut-Off Values In Diagnosis Of Preoperativemedullary Thyroid Cancer, Emi̇ne Kartal Baykan, Mehmet Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) originates from parafollicular cells (C cell) and produces calcitonin (CT). Basal serum CT was used in the diagnosis and treatment of MTC. If basal CT level is 100 pg/mL or higher, it is likely to have MTC, but if basal CT level is below 10 pg/mL, the probability of developing thyroid disease is low. In cases with basal CT level between 10-100 pg/mL, pentagastrin-stimulated (PS) CT level is studied to evaluate MTC and C cell hyperplasia (CHH). This study aimed to determine cut-off value for basal and PS peak CT level for diagnosis of MTC. …

Background/aim: It is believed that radiotherapy has important effects on oxidant/antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidant formation and antioxidant defense is disrupted in favor of oxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the biochemical changes in saliva pre- and postradiotherapy in head-neck radiotherapy patients and to find out the effects of radiation on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in saliva. Materials and methods: This study included 16 patients undergoing head-neck radiotherapy in Atatürk University Research Hospital. The levels of GSH, GSH-Px, and MDA were measured in saliva samples taken from …
