Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

This study explores the impact of the type and dosage of listening and spoken language (LSL) services on speech and language outcomes in children with cochlear implants or hearing aids in two LSL programs. Identical demographic variables were collected across the two programs for use in the statistical analyses. Speech and language outcomes were examined at ages 3 and 5 using standardized test measures. At age 3, significant differences in LSL outcomes existed between programs for children using cochlear implants but not for children using binaural hearing aids. However, at age five, outcomes were similar between the different LSL programs …

Atypical Presentations Of Alimentary Tract Duplications In Children: Two Case Reports, Nimmita Srisan, Palittiya Sintusek, Teerasak Phewplung, Paisarn Vejchapipat

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Alimentary tract duplication is a rare congenital anomaly. We present herein, two cases of different types of alimentary tract duplications that have entirely different clinical presentations. The first case was a girl presented with chronic constipation was finally diagnosed with tubular duplications of the entire colon. The other was a toddler with acute intestinal obstruction diagnosed with cystic duplication at terminal ileum. These two cases remind us of the difficulty in preoperative diagnosis. High suspicion of the disease and multimodality approaches were beneficial for accurate preoperative diagnosis. Surgery was the mainstay of the treatment.

Esophageal tumors are uncommon in pediatric population and most of them are benign. Esophageal hamartomas have been reported extremely rare in children. These can present as intramural tumors of the esophageal wall or as polyps. Dysphagia is the main symptom described in their case, but other specific symptoms are also reported. Such symptoms encountered in clinical practice are represented by obstructive apnea episodes and bradycardia, poor weight gain, epigastric or retrosternal pain, hematemesis or melena, dysphonia or tracheal sounds. Diagnosis can be delayed due to the insidious onset and non-specific symptoms, therefore patient’s compliance to follow-up and broad, careful evaluation …

The purpose of this study was to identify the most frequent pediatric diseases in the Emergency Medical Service of an international airport in Mexico. The study was observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional. It is concluded that diseases of digestive (presumed infectious gastroenteritis) and …

Objective To study the value of measuring plasma levels of cardiac myosin-binding protein C (cMyBP-C) as a biomarker in the diagnosis and prognosis of heart failure (HF) in pediatric patients. Background Previous research studies have declared that cMyBP-C phosphorylation modulates cardiac contractility. It is a thick filament-associated protein which regulates actin–myosin interaction and thereby the systolic and diastolic function of the heart and regulates cardiac contractility. CMyBP-C has been reported in many studies as a specific early diagnostic biomarker of myocardial infarction. Patients and methods To reach the goal of this research, a case–control study was designed. The study sample …

"There Is Always Violence": An Exploratory Study Of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Street-Involved Children, Jarrett D. Davis, Glenn M. Miles, Sean Blackburn, Erika Mosebach-Kornelsen

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

As the economic center of Cambodia, Phnom Penh has long been a hotspot for street-involved children and families. While violence is a common facet of life on the street, risk and vulnerability among children is notoriously difficult to measure. Most large-scale surveys tend to sample children within homes and schools, which overlook street-involved children who are commonly unregistered, irregularly attend school, and live outside of houses. This research paper is one of a series of studies on such groups in Southeast Asia. The study conducted 94 semi-structured interviews with street-involved children eight to 18 years of age in Phnom Penh. …
