The National Institutes of Health has launched an ambitious longitudinal research project called the All of Us Research Program (https://allofus.nih.gov/). Part of the Precision Medicine Initiative, All of Us seeks to engage one million or more volunteers living in the U.S. to contribute their health data over many years to improve health outcomes, fuel the development of new, more precise medical treatments, catalyze a new era of evidence-based preventive care and close the health disparities gap.

Lead exposure remains a prevalent public health issue in many communities. In some cases, the exposure risk comes from contaminated water, but in others it is from the legacy of lead-based paint or contaminated soils. Here, we report on recent work using digital scholarship techniques along side a citizen science model to increase awareness and reduce environmental hazards in the affected city of South Bend, Indiana. Over the past two years, we have worked closely with local community organizations, civic entities and concerned individuals to develop a home test kit that puts the tools to determine risk in the hands …

In the United States 72% of Internet users look online to find health information, with some being high quality and other information dangerous. The University of Minnesota is a land grant institution, and the Health Sciences Libraries have a strong outreach role, educating health information consumers across Minnesota about high quality resources. In 2016, we conducted a study at the Minnesota State Fair to identify where Minnesotans find online health information, how they use it, their confidence in assessing it, and what they think is missing. In the healthcare field in which out-of-date information can harm patients, the currency and immediacy of digital collections is highly valued. As a result, many health science libraries have deselected much of their print collections (Haapanen, Kultamaa, Ovaska, & Salmi, 2015; Lingle & Robinson, 2009; Tobia & Hunnicutt, 2008; Xiaoli & Kopper, 2005). However, print materials continue to be valued by health science library users for a variety of purposes (Houghton, 2017; Watson, 2016). There are approximately 1,800 people living with HIV in eastern North Carolina and are unaware of their infection. A decade ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued revised recommendations to routinely test for HIV in various settings, including emergency departments. We used those guidelines to test adults, treat those unaware of their infection, and re-link others to care.
