In the United States, prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer diagnosed in men. Prostate cancer is currently diagnosed with the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test; however, it leads to many false positives and therefore unneeded biopsies. Previous studies have shown that cancerous prostates have a much lower concentration of zinc than healthy prostates. Lanthanide ions exhibit optical imaging properties; however, the amount of energy needed to directly excite these ions could potentially be damaging to biological tissue. To overcome this limitation, organic chromophores, such as quinolines, can be used to absorb the excited light and transfer the energy obtained to the attached lanthanide ion. This intramolecular energy transfer results in the sensitization of the lanthanide ion luminescence. Latin@ immigrants face social and cultural barriers, which can impact use of medical/health services for this population, including language, cultural forces, and fear of deportation. The purpose of this study is to understand human and health services related behaviors among Latin@ immigrants. Spanish speaking participants reported on health information packets and medical literacy items in an anonymous survey. Medical terminology items were used to determine comprehension and knowledge of medical services concerning the Latin@ community in a Southern state. Participants reported on health behavior and utilization of services. Recommendations for policies and providers are explored.

This research poster details the relationship between cancer treatments and alternative approaches, such as mindfulness. The purpose of this study was to determine the methodology used by doctors to treat breast cancer and their willingness to try a holistic approach. This study was conducted on site at the UIC Cancer Center as well as remotely within hospitals around the Chicagoland area. We determined that mindfulness is in fact a worthwhile asset to breast cancer patients and that the field of oncology could support further research.

My study focuses on drug abuse as it relates to mental health. One study was conducted where people were asked about all the prescribed medications they were on for a month or longer, and the correlation between mental health disorders and opioid use was much more direct for those who were on them for longer. Another study found that it became common for adolescents to self- medicate, and that these adolescents believed that they were curing their own mental health issues by doing so. In my study, I found several factors to contribute to this correlation.

However, using an alcohol impregnated port protector cap is more effective at both sterilizing the site and reducing the incidence of bloodstream infections. Restricted ankle dorsiflexion can cause altered biomechanics and loading patterns, which can lead to injury from over-compensation in movement patterns. Upon delivery, the cord continues to pump nutrient-rich blood to the fetus until impeded by clamping or natural occlusion. A literature review of articles published from 2011 to 2018 was conducted in order to determine the effects of delaying cord clamping on extrauterine transition in full-term infants. A literature review was performed between September 2018 and November 2018 to determine the effects of community water fluoridation cessation in rural communities, namely in Ida Grove, Iowa. Eleven articles were selected using inclusion and exclusion parameters, analyzed by the researchers, and summarized. Results of the literature review highlighted the benefits of fluoridation, which outweighed the possible risks. A plan of action was set out by the researchers to best promote optimal fluoridation in rural communities.

Ten articles were reviewed between August and November 2018 with the purpose of helping Village Northwest Unlimited develop a therapeutic guideline for patients at risk or that are currently afflicted with the skin condition. After reviewing the literature, the researchers have concluded that there are multiple options for treatment rather than a single best treatment option for intertrigo. However, throughout this literature review, the researchers have provided many research articles that share possible treatment options for patients with intertrigo.

A literature review was performed between the months of August 2018 to December 2018 on ways to decrease unnecessary usage of Foley catheters. Ten articles were reviewed focusing on bed-bound, incontinent women. Research was performed for Spencer Hospital looking at the various ways to decrease the usage, decrease catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI’s), and decrease skin breakdown from incontinence. Through the research, it was found that a large proportion of catheters are used when they are unnecessary. A literature review was conducted between the months of August 2018 and November 2018 to determine the effects of weighted blankets in patients with symptoms of anxiety. Ten articles were reviewed focusing on patients with anxiety-related symptoms. The purpose was to advocate for the purchase of more weighted blankets for the hospital in Spencer, Iowa. Medical staff currently do not have protocol in place regarding the use of the three weighted blankets the Spencer Hospital already owns. Conclusive evidence was found supporting the use of deep pressure touch stimulation through weighted blankets in patients with anxiety.

Context: Lacrosse is a fast growing contact sport, minimal studies have examined head impacts in women’s lacrosse.

Objective: To compare head impact mechanisms and type of play in women’s lacrosse.

Design: Descriptive epidemiology study.

Setting: Collegiate lacrosse fields.

Participants: 29 women’s lacrosse players (age=20.39±0.39 years, height=162.13+6.50 cm, mass=60.99+4.82 kg) participated over years. Intervention: Participants wore xPatch sensors during games and practices.

Main Outcomes Measures: Peak linear (PLA; g) and rotational (PRA; deg/sec²) accelerations of head impacts.

By studying head impacts over multiple seasons, injury patterns may be recognized which can lead to rule changes and other injury reduction measures. The purpose of our study was to compare head impact characteristics (impact location and mechanism) in men’s soccer over 3 years. We recruited 26 NCAA Division III intercollegiate male soccer players (age=19.64±1.25 years, height=181.70±5.80 cm, mass=76.98±10.19 kg) over 3years. X2 Biosystems xPatch sensors measured frequency and magnitude of all head impacts over a 10 g threshold. The overall male soccer player IR was 7.50/1000 athlete-exposures (CI₉₅=2.85-12.15).
