Women who have had preeclamptic pregnancies are at risk for life-long cardiovascular disease. However, the factors contributing to this risk have yet to be established. Sympathetic nervous system dysregulation has been proposed to contribute to cardiovascular dysfunction during preeclamptic pregnancies. Therefore, we examined muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) at baseline and during a chemoreflex stimulus in women 6-24 months postpartum following a preeclamptic pregnancy (PE; n=6, age 28±2 y, BMI 27±3 kg/m2, 17±4 months postpartum). We have all seen the reports on the news about issues related to IV rooms and IV room compounding. Many health-system pharmacies have implemented, or are considering some form of intravenous (IV) automation and/ or compounding system in their clean rooms to reduce pharmacy errors and improve accuracy, productivity, and workflow. Manufacturers tout that automated systems, used appropriately, aid in reducing errors from reaching patients. Additionally, IV admixture automation is one of the most recent areas where technology has been added to pharmacy workflow.

White-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, is responsible for the extensive mortality of bats in the United States. In an effort to develop tools to reduce bat mortality attributed to WNS, an in vitro experiment was conducted to quantify the inhibitory effects of select volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as explore potential synergistic activities. The experiment involved exposing mycelial plugs of P. destructans to various concentrations of B23 as well as B23 and decanal together at equimolar ratios. The leading cause of death among firefighters is sudden cardiac event, and it is acknowledged that most ischemic events are due to an occlusive thrombus formation. In addition, due to the demanding job requirements and shift work, firefighters are commonly known to overuse caffeine as an ergogenic aid. The purposes of this study were to examine the potential effects of caffeine on the hemostatic response to simulated firefighting activity.

Physical activity recommendations to reduce all cause mortality consist of 10 minute bouts of a moderate-vigorous intensity, for a total of 150 min/week. This study investigates if those 10 minute bouts really matter. We found that step count was the best predictor of waist circumference. This finding supports many new technological devices that use step counts as a form of measuring activity. It provides support that the more steps you take, the likelier you will have a small waist.

This project objectives were to determine the effects of oral contraceptives and menstrual cycle on the benefits of caffeine supplementation for cycling performance. Seventeen recreationally trained female cyclists completed four trials consisting of 3 kilometer time trials. Subjects ingested either caffeine or a placebo one hour prior to each trial. The magnitude of the ergogenic aid of caffeine was compared between oral contraceptive users and eumenorreheic females. In addition, the effect of caffeine was compared across different phases of the menstrual cycle, specifically the follicular and luteal phases.

Service Members who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) tend to experience a degradation of focus and attention capabilities. The purpose of this initial pilot study is to measure the false alarm rates and thresholds of Service Members with mTBI during contralateral and informational masking tests and compare their outcomes to adults without mTBI. Contralateral and informational masking tasks both involve different levels of uncertainty and different forms of central masking. These two tasks will be used to quantify the participants’ accuracy in identifying the target stimulus and their associated levels of distractibility and impulsivity. Low parenting competence and limited emotional availability decrease the quality of the parent-infant relationship (Young, 2011; Sturge-Apple et al., 2012). However, co-occupations, or reciprocal relationships where the occupations of two or more individuals are interactively shaping each other, have been associated with strengthening parent-infant relationships (Pierce, 2009; Price & Stephenson, 2009). Unregulated new psychoactive substances (NPS) in “pure” or “preparation” forms are designed to mimic the effects of controlled substances, and are introduced and reintroduced in the market as a cheap substitute of established regulated drugs in quick succession to loophole the law enforcement efforts on combating drugs. For example, carfentanil, a synthetic opioid activates the opioid receptors similar to morphine but it is astoundingly potent compared to a typical drug of abuse (100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more powerful than morphine). Nurse-to-patient ratios has been a topic of discussion that has gained momentum over the last several years. In the state of Kentucky, there is no policy mandating a maximum nurse to patient ratio. However, evidence-based practice suggests that lower nurse-to-patient ratios results in better patient outcomes and therefore, the majority of policies in place regarding nurse to patient ratios are not based on best evidence.

Work stress as well as burnout have been found in different occupations at different levels. Maslach Burnout Inventory Questionnaires and Self-Report Form of Job Satisfaction were used to investigate the level of stress and burn-out in mental health professionals in Prizren and at the same time their possible causes of stress and burn-out. Participants in the research were (N = 24, Mage = 41.19, SD = 8.03), respondents of both sexes, dominated by female respondents with 16 respondents or 66.7%. High stress level resulted in 66.7% of the sample; emotional exhaustion at 16.7%; depersonalization at 37.5%and 100% resulted in a …
