We decided to conduct research in an effort to answer our question, “Are spacer devices the most effective treatment option for patients with asthma?”. We recognized that there has been debate about whether or not the standard prescribed metered-dose inhalers effectively administer medication to a patient's lungs due to the need for hand-breath coordination. Therefore, we wanted to discover if attaching spacer devices onto inhalers would deliver medication more thoroughly by eliminating this need as well as the overall effectiveness of this device when compared to other treatment options. Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), the infamous plant responsible for the death of Socrates, is toxic to humans and animals. In cases where hemlock led to death, the cause of death is usually associated with respiratory arrest, muscle paralysis or complications of acute renal failure. While the entire plant is toxic, the most dangerous part is the seeds, which contain the highest alkaloid concentration. It contains eight piperidine alkaloids, with the most potent one being coniine. Coniine is a neurotoxin that disrupts the function of the peripheral nervous system, causing respiratory paralysis. The neuropathological outcomes of a viral infection in the brain are often age-dependent. Infection of the immature CNS can lead to impairment of neural/stem progenitor cell (NSPCs) activity. NSPCs are multi-potent progenitor cells of the CNS and are responsible for populating the brain with neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes during development. Viral infections may alter NSPC activity via two mechanisms; directly by infection of the NSPC or indirectly due to the anti-viral immune response. Osseous tissue contains the preserved record of an organism’s diseases and injuries that can be uncovered by examination of the present skeletal abnormalities. This study provides a thorough inspection of osteopathology and its etiology in a modern ursid with a known medical history. The skeletal remains of a captive-born spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) were analysed for gross pathologies that manifested during the life of the animal. All observed osteopathologies were correlated with diseases experienced in the life of the individual, most of which were age-related. My poster will be about my volunteer work with MercyOne along with information regarding occupational therapy. I will discuss the tasks I completed at MercyOne and what I observed while in the therapy area. In addition, I will include a section about what occupational therapy is. I will do research on food therapy since that is a useful technique occupational therapist utilize and I believe others should be educated on. At the end, I will include my future plans to become a pediatric occupational therapist.

MercyOne Sartori Hospital Kaitlyn Bahlmann For my cooperative education internship, I decided to volunteer as a patient advocate on the medical/surgical floor of Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls. My poster will describe my experience interacting with and helping surgical patients have a better hospital stay. It’ll explain the purpose of volunteers and the psychological benefits that they provide for patients and their families. Volunteering at the hospital has given me direct patient contact experience and supplemented my other healthcare experiences as a pre-physician’s assistant student.

Hazardous child labor is defined as work which, by its nature, is harmful to the health, safety, and moral of children. Hazardous child labor is notably found in the brick kiln industry of India. Families rely on their children to increase their productivity, largely due to debt bondage. Other reasons for child labor in this industry include barriers to educational opportunities and social implications resulting from the caste system. In this work we present a solution by development of a simple, safe and accessible at-home exercise program for individuals with upper limb loss. It is intended to help amputees strengthen the muscles needed to operate body-powered prostheses when muscles have atrophied from lack of use. One-third of individuals struggling with constipation also suffer chronically from comorbid depression, but the evidently shared etiology has remained relatively ambiguous. This proposed study aims to analyze the role of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), a newly recorded neural phenomenon that causes relaxing “tingles” from unique “triggers” in a subset of individuals, in altering serotonin (5-HT) levels within the ENS to aid with both depression and constipation. In depressed individuals, reduced 5-HT has been clinically accepted as a key symptom and is frequently treated with ineffective SSRIs. I researched the similarities and differences between Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD)—a disease with symptoms and progression pattern that parallels Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)—and AD. I studied how β-amyloid accumulates in various brain regions—such as the prefrontal, occipital, entorhinal and parietal cortices—in canines to determine how β-amyloid accumulation is associated with the development of behaviors signifying cognitive decline observed in CCD and AD—such as changes in the sleep-wake cycle, social interaction, housetraining, and general orientation—in order to understand how neuroscientists may be able to derive new understandings from a canine model with CCD, and apply them to humans with AD to develop …

Previous studies have shown a difference in perceptions of maternal guilt induction when there are variations in the situation of the event and the structure of the maternal guilt inducting statement (Rote, 2017). This research expands on this by examining whether differences in attention to specific words within guilt inductive statements may underly previously observed variations. Using eye-tracking methodology and hypothetical vignettes, this study examined which words college-aged students attended to most within maternal guilt inductive statements. Music and medicine are merging to treat depression in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Antidepressants, the current standard, demonstrate mixed effects in clinical trials, warranting other treatment options. Here, I compare music therapy to antidepressants in the treatment of depression in PD via literature review. Studies of depressed PD patients undergoing music therapy and/or antidepressants were reviewed with attention to variables including depression (on a patient-reported outcome) that were measured pre- and post- therapy. In the music studies, improvements were seen in depression. Methodological inconsistencies across these studies, a paucity of studies, and small sample sizes, however, necessitate more research to reach …

Lifting teams provide nurses with the trained assistance they need to refrain from reoccurring musculoskeletal injuries. Patient handling is a common task within the healthcare industry. Rehabilitation Therapists (RTs) and Rehabilitation Therapist Assistants (RTAs) report a significantly high incidence rate of low-back injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The purpose of this study was to characterize the ergonomic risks associated with patient transfers and assisted gait therapy. Exposure to ergonomic risk factors were assessed using the Strain Index (SI), Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), and 3-Dimensional Static Strength Prediction Program (3DSSPP).
