Modeling The Effects Of Fentanyl And Narcan On The Opioid Epidemic In Allegheny County Using Mathematics, Lindsay Moskal, Lauren Sines, Rachael Neilan Ph.D.
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Starting in the 1990s, physicians across the United States have increasingly prescribed opioid pain relievers, which has given rise to the current opioid epidemic. As a result, there has been a drastic increase in the number of overdose fatalities. In 2017, the number of opioid overdose deaths peaked and the U.S. declared the crisis as a public health emergency. One state that has contributed significantly to this epidemic is Pennsylvania, which ranks first for the greatest number of overdose deaths and third for the highest death rate. In fact, Allegheny County has witnessed an overdose death rate that is three …

Understanding Nursing Students' Attitudes And Knowledge In Caring For People With Disabilities, Cassidy Kaczor, Ashley Mcdanald
Understanding Nursing Students' Attitudes And Knowledge In Caring For People With Disabilities, Cassidy Kaczor, Ashley Mcdanald
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
This study focused on exploring the knowledge, attitudes, and comfort level of undergraduate nursing students in caring for people with disabilities (PWD). Inclusion of disability content in nursing curricula is limited. Smeltzer and colleagues (2010) discovered an absence of disability-related content in pre-licensure nursing textbooks. PWDs have indicated four areas of concern regarding their care by nursing staff: poor communication, lack of competence, negative attitudes, and quality of care received. We hypothesized, if education on the health care of PWD and standardized patient experiences are implemented into nursing school curriculum then nursing students will have an increase in knowledge and …

A Reinforcement Learning Based Control Approach For Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression, Jason C. Huang, Scott C. Tadler, Brian J. Mickey, Keith Jones
Utah Space Grant Consortium
High-dose propofol is being investigated for its potential antidepressant effect. Propofol is titrated to induce burst suppression, a specific EEG pattern. However, propofol is difficult to dose due to uncertainty in each patient’s pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), and the lack of a commercially available monitor of propofol concentration. Clinicians currently infer the proper drug dose after observing the EEG response to the given dose. In this report we share our development of an automated controller to optimally administer propofol-induced burst suppression. We designed a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, which includes two deep neural networks and relates a …

Annual Evaluation Of The Student's Perception Of The Value Of Writing Goals, Renee Kuess
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Focus: This study focused on pharmacy students’ perception of the value of writing goals and how this perception changes as students progress in the program.
Methods: Annually, all students in the pharmacy program are required to reflect on the previous year’s goals and develop new goals. Following this assignment, a survey was sent out to a random sample (n=162) of students. Based on the feedback, the response was classified as indicating “value” or “no value”.
Results: Of the 162 surveys sent out, there were 78 completed responses. 56.25% of responses indicated the student found “value” in the assignment. The data …

Gauging Interest In An Elective Course To Further Careers In Healthcare Academia, Karielle Shaffery
ONU Student Research Colloquium
There has been continuous growth in the number of pharmacy schools, which has led to an expanded need for pharmacy faculty members. Although there is a recognized and unmet need for such faculty, the topic of pharmacy academia is sparsely addressed in pharmacy programs. Integrating students in an elective teaching course during their didactic education, prior to determination of their career path, could inspire more students to take on the role of an educator. Ideally, allowing students to have first-hand experience in academia focused activities and exposing them to the responsibilities of an academician could peak interest in this area. …

An Examination Of The Validity Of An Ios-Based Heart Rate And Pulse Oximetry App During And After Moderate Intensity Exercise, Nathan Grizenko, Rachel Shipman, Ian Cree, Mitchell Colvin
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Fitness tracking apps are popular. There is little data validating their use during and after exercise. PURPOSE: Validate an iOS-based pulse oximeter against a fingertip pulse oximeter and a Polar® heart rate monitor during moderate intensity exercise and recovery. METHODS: Age Estimated Maximal Heart Rate (AEMHR) was calculated for fifteen college-aged students. Participants completed a 30-minute running trial divided into three 10-minute segments intended to elicit heart rate responses of 60, 70, and 80% of AEMHR. Heart rate and oxygen saturation data were collected at five and nine minutes of each segment. RESULTS: At 60% the digiDoc® app exhibited a …

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Over one million Americans are diagnosed with brain diseases or disorders each year. This means brain disease is very common, and because most brain diseases are incurable, it is vital that more information on prevention is provided. Brain training is a program of regular activities that claims to maintain or improve one’s cognitive abilities. Cognitive abilities are brain-based skills required to perform various mental tasks, from the simplest to the most complex. This presentation will discuss the effects that brain training activities have on cognition and brain function.
Orthopedic Injuries In Athletes, Cameron Adams
Orthopedic Injuries In Athletes, Cameron Adams
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
When thinking of athletes and orthopedic injuries, we often associate these injuries with more physical sports such as football, basketball, or even soccer. What we don’t realize is that an injury of any degree can occur in any sport, regardless of the level of physicality. An orthopedic injury is any injury to the bones, muscles, or joints of the musculoskeletal system. These injuries include, but are not limited to, ACL tears, meniscus tears, broken bones, muscle tears, sprains, dislocations, or fractures, obtained during a sport. Most injuries of this nature are hard to ignore, but depending on the area and …
Shoulder And Elbow Injury Prevention In Baseball Pitchers, Taylor Charlton
Shoulder And Elbow Injury Prevention In Baseball Pitchers, Taylor Charlton
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Shoulder and elbow injuries are extremely common in baseball pitchers due to overuse and extreme stress. To assess the risk factors for these injuries, adolescents were chosen to complete testing on strength and range of motion. Many pitchers do not pay attention to the risk of injury while playing, but the longer they pitch without prevention programs, the higher their risks for future injury. The literature finds that posterior shoulder weakness and rotator cuff weakness are the leading causes of injury in adolescent pitchers. Athletic trainers, coaches, and/or parents have the ability to take athletes through prevention programs with the …

The Effect Of Ankle Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion On Lower Extremity Injuries, Breana Schuiteman, Sarah Coppock, Elizabeth Foster, Jason Rosema, Rick Loutsch, Atc
Celebration of Research
Context: The weight-bearing lunge test is an effective method in determining the range of motion of ankle dorsiflexion. Despite the lack of research for this test it does have good inter-rater and intra-rater reliability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify baseline data for athletes and observe the relationship between ankle dorsiflexion measurements and non-contact lower extremity injuries. Ankle dorsiflexion can be defined as the degree as to which the dorsal portion of the foot can be brought closer to the tibia. A lack of ankle dorsiflexion can cause varied biomechanics and loading patterns which can lead to …

Pain And Anxiety In Pediatric Populations Receiving Immunizations, Kate Staab, Alyssa Krohn, Sydney Hughes
Celebration of Research
A literature review was conducted utilizing CINAHL, PubMed, and Science Direct databases to establish best practices for pain and anxiety mitigation in the pediatric population receiving immunizations. Ten articles were appraised, mainly focusing on pediatric patients in clinic settings. Results showed that many types of interventions—distraction, non-pharmacological, and pharmacological—effectively lowered pain and anxiety levels in pediatric patients of all ages receiving vaccinations. Additionally, educating parents, caregivers, and health care staff is essential to providing a more therapeutic environment for pediatric patients during vaccine administration.

Picc Lines: Preventing Complications Using Best Practice, Brooke Hunwardsen, Grant Rohrer, Stephanie Seymour, Megan Vollmer
Celebration of Research
A peripherally inserted central catheter, or PICC line, is a central venous catheter placed in a peripheral vein located in the upper arm and then threaded into the superior vena cava where it ends. Long term venous access for medication administration, laboratory testing, blood transfusions, and total parenteral nutrition are just a few reasons why PICC line placement is essential for patient care. As PICC lines have become more prevalent in the healthcare field, complications associated with them have become illuminated. Common complications associated with PICC lines include infection, occlusion, embolism, dislodgment, bleeding associated with dressing changes, issues with skin …

Fact Or Myth: The Flu Can Be Caused By The Flu Vaccine, Arleigh Wood
Fact Or Myth: The Flu Can Be Caused By The Flu Vaccine, Arleigh Wood
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
To many, the flu vaccine seems like a threat to an otherwise healthy individual. People often get the flu after receiving the flu shot, which does not promote confidence in the general public. These and other reasonings have created a myth that the flu vaccine can cause the flu. Understanding how the vaccination is created and how it interacts with the immune system helps to realize why the flu vaccine cannot cause the virus. For the vaccine to work, adaptive immunity must be activated by the introduction of the viral particles in a safe manner. An effective immune response from …
