From April 2020 to April 2021, it has been recorded that there have been 75,673 opioid overdose-related deaths in the United States. This number is up almost 20,000 more from the last period that deaths were recorded, coming in at 56,064 from April 2019 to April 2020. The use of naloxone, has been proven to save the lives of overdose patients on opioids by reversing its effects. It has already shown significant reduction in opioid overdose related mortality. Pharmacists are now able to prescribe naloxone with opioid prescriptions without a script from a doctor. EMS units are active in communities …

Obsessions In Ocd Mimicking Capgras: A Case Report, Ricky Chu, Alexander Swartz, Helen Yi May 2022

Obsessions In Ocd Mimicking Capgras: A Case Report, Ricky Chu, Alexander Swartz, Helen Yi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mentally debilitating condition that can present in a multitude of ways and its manifestations can vary within the diagnosed patient population. OCD can be diagnosed with the presence of either obsessions or compulsions and does not require both. Sometimes, OCD can affect a patient in a way that mimics delusional misidentification syndromes. In these cases, a patient's ego-dystonia can be a key distinguishing feature in diagnosis. In one specific delusional misidentification syndrome, Capgras, a patient possesses fixed beliefs that a known person (or sometimes object) is an imposter. And even though the textbook OCD …

• The ketogenic diet is a popular, controversial diet that fuels the brain through beta-oxidation of fatty acids and production of ketone bodies, the most populous of which is betahydroxybutyrate (BHB).

  • The ketogenic diet consists of 70-80% fats, 20-25% protein, and 5-10% carbohydrates.

• Medically, the ketogenic diet is utilized in patients with epilepsy and recommended by some physicians to improve general health through weight loss and insulin sensitivity.

• Key factors of neurodegeneration include glucose hypometabolism, oxidative damage, and neuroinflammation.

  • Studies have shown that with ingestion of exogenous ketones alone, or endogenous ketonemia through a ketogenic diet, there is: …

Modeling The Role Of Cyclin C In Connecting Stress-Induced Mitochondrial Fission To Apoptosis, Steven J. Doyle, Randy Strich May 2022

Modeling The Role Of Cyclin C In Connecting Stress-Induced Mitochondrial Fission To Apoptosis, Steven J. Doyle, Randy Strich

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

For normal cell function, exogenous signals must be correctly interpreted, and the proper response executed. The mitochondria are key regulatory nodes of cellular fate. For example, mitochondria undergo fission and fusion cycles depending on the energetic needs of the cell. Additionally, regulated cell death pathways also function at the mitochondria. Cyclin C is a transcriptional regulator of stress response and growth control genes. Following stress, a portion of cyclin C translocates to the cytoplasm, where it interacts with both the mitochondrial fission and apoptotic machinery. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that Cyclin C represents a key mediator linking transcription …

Acute traumatic posterior sternoclavicular (SC) joint dislocation is a serious injury given its potential to cause cardiovascular and airway compromise that typically will require emergent closed reduction. Posterior SC joint dislocations are usually caused by a high energy mechanism. Typical treatment involves closed reduction followed by observation. There is limited data on the rate of return to sport following this injury pattern when treated in a closed fashion.

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro May 2022

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Pharmacologic management of chronic pain has variable results, sometimes resorting to ineffective and dangerous opioids that can potentiate substance abuse in a vulnerable population.

Exercise is unique in its ability to positively impact both the molecular and psychological aspects of chronic pain. Its role in decreasing inflammation as well as improving mental health make it an excellent option for improving quality of life.

Physicians should work with their patients to develop a patient-centered exercise plan to manage chronic pain.

Substrate-Specific Effect On Sirtuin Conformation And Oligomerization, Jie Yang, Shannon L. Dwyer, Nathan I. Nicely, Brian P. Weiser

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Human sirtuins are a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD +)-dependent enzymes that are responsible for removing acyl modifications from lysine residues. Sirtuins are involved in the formation and proliferation of cancers and are thought to regulate the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Although sirtuins can be pharmacologically targeted by small molecules, it is not easy to modulate the substrate selectivity of sirtuins despite the chemical diversity of their substrates. Here, we report substrate-specific effects on sirtuin conformation and oligomerization that regulate enzyme deacylase activity. We used fluorescent acyl peptide probes to study substrate interactions with two sirtuin isoforms: SIRT2 and …

What Motivates Patients To Enroll In A Naloxone Co-Prescribing Program?, Christina Kanagawa, David Aloisio, Eshani Choksi, Manasa Gowda, Tyler Klecha, Charles M. Defendorf

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Patients were contacted via phone call to establish knowledge of and prescription status regarding naloxone. They were then invited to enroll in a research study consisting of two online surveys.

The patients who had been prescribed naloxone by the time the study had started ranked being persuaded by a medical professional as being the most important reason for accepting the naloxone prescription.

Insufficient data collected during the six-week time frame to draw statistically significant conclusions about what motivates patients to receive naloxone co-prescriptions.

Correlations seen in this study are interesting and warrant further investigation.

Ung2 And Rpa Activity On Ssdna-Dsdna Junctions, Kathy Chen, Sharon Greenwood, Brian P. Weiser May 2022

Ung2 And Rpa Activity On Ssdna-Dsdna Junctions, Kathy Chen, Sharon Greenwood, Brian P. Weiser

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Uracil DNA glycosylase, or UNG2, is an enzyme that is involved in DNA repair. Its primary job is to eliminate harmful uracil bases from DNA strands. To do this, the enzyme is assisted by replication protein A (RPA). RPA helps UNG2 in the identification of uracil bases by targeting UNG2 activity near ssDNA-dsDNA junctions (1-3). The results from assays presented here agree with published findings that showed UNG2 is heavily targeted by RPA to uracil bases that are close to ssDNA-dsDNA junctions (for example, uracil located 9 bps from the junction as opposed to 33 bps) (1,2). However, these previous …
