The Wizarding World Of Resilience, Gretchen Baldwin, Amy Kulbok, Courtney Leak

Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. In recent years, there has been a marked decrease in resilience in young adults. In higher education, this decline has resulted in increased anxiety and depression among college students. Record numbers of college students are attending counseling and taking medication. They report struggling to complete their coursework, interact with peers, or develop a clear sense of self. This presentation describes a pscho-educational and experiential group therapy approach to teaching resilience to college students with mental illness using popular culture, particularly the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Streptococcus mutans JH1140 is a strain of bacteria which produces a lantibiotic product, named mutacin 1140. Mutacin 1140 has been shown to be effective at inhibiting Gram-positive bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Mutacin 1140 is a ribosomally synthesized peptide antibiotic that undergoes extensive posttranslational modifications (PTM). We have found that Mutacin 1140 and an aminoglycoside, Kanamycin, when combined together, act synergistically against Staphylococcus aureus. This was determined by performing serial kill curve dilution overlays on solid media, followed up with kill curve by microdilution plate, and most recently confirmed with kill curve CFU count plates …

Sometimes Disability Service Providers can feel that they are fighting a constant battle against faculty to provide testing accommodations. But everyone in this comic called college is a super hero, and we've got to work together. This session will show how the Alternate Testing Program at Appalachian State University has utilized new practices and procedures to work in conjunction with faculty to ensure that students are effectively utilizing accommodations during tests. Features include: policy implementation, faculty survey results, online Google forms, communications, how to's, scenarios, and process and procedure explanations for a thorough review of alternate testing best practices.
