A bifunctional gene xylanase of B. subtilis RSKK243 encoding detectable beta(1,4) glucanase (CMCase) activity in addition to a high level of main xylanase activity was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli with pUC18 plasmid and in various Bacillus subtilis strains with pUB110 vector. For enzymatic analysis and plasmid isolation, the gene was also expressed in xylanase and beta glucanase negative B.subtilis YB886 strain with pUB110 vector. The pUB110 with bifunctional xylanase gene was transferred into B. subtilis RSKK243 for maximizing the enzyme yield, as well as into other RSKK strains to create novel strains with multiple enzyme capacities. Canine Mast Cell Tumors: A Pathological Survey Of Nineteen Cases, Sevi̇l Atalay Vural, Yilmaz Aydin

In the survey study, a total of 19 canine mast cell tumors were examined with regard to sex, age, breed of dogs, tumor location, and pathological findings in the period of 1960-1999. The majority of tumors occurred in males (78%) and between the ages of 6 and 11 years (67%). The pointer was predisposed to development of tumors (35%). The hindquarters and hind legs were most commonly involved, followed by the extragenital inguinal area and trunk. The tumors clearly had a site preference for the posterior region of the body (79%). This study was carried out to determine the effect of the supplementation of enzyme and probiotic to broiler feeds based on barley and wheat on broiler performance, dressing percentage, the small intestinal length and weight, liver and abdominal fat weights, intestinal viscosity and the percentage of sticky droppings. The study was carried out to investigate the effects of sunflower meal with an enzyme mixture containing \alpha-amylase, ß-glucanase, cellulase, lipase and protease substituted for soybean meal in broiler diets on performance, intestinal weight, viscosity and pH, as well as the frequency of sticky droppings and abdominal fat. In the trial, a total of 960 one-day-old Avian broiler chicks were used. The trial lasted 6 weeks. A total of 12 experimental diets were supplied ad libitum. The morphology of the spinal cord in 15 chickens, 15 ducks and 15 pigeons obtained from the Ankara region were examined. The spinal cord consisted of 15 cervical, 7 thoracic, 14 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 41 segments) in the chickens; 15 cervical, 8 thoracic, 16 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 44 segments) in the ducks and 13 cervical, 6 thoracic, 13 lumbosacral and 5 coccygeal segments (a total of 37 segments) in the pigeons. Survey Of European Foulbrood Disease In Bee Farms Located In Elazığ And The Surrounding Provinces, Hali̇l Şi̇mşek, Canan Özcan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A total of 250 specimens from 110 bee farms located in Elazığ and the surrounding provinces were taken in 1999 and 2000. The specimens were examined for European Foulbrood Disease. Under macroscopic examination clinical symptoms were noted in 12 specimens, and Paenibacillus alvei was isolated and identified from 8 of these specimens. As a result of the antibiotic sensitivity test, the isolate was found sensitive to enrofloxacin, streptomycin and erythromycin 75%, 75%, and 62,5% of the time respectively. In this study, the presence of European Foulbrood Disease was determined in 3.2% of cases in Elazığ and the surrounding provinces.

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of copper sulphate administration on body weight gain and some biochemical, haematological parameters in lambs which had serum copper levels at subclinical values. This study was performed on 30 Ivesi male lambs (control group: 12, experimental group: 18), aged with 15-20 days. This study was carried out to investigate the fattening performance, and slaughter and carcass characteristics of Chios x Akkaraman F_1 and B_1 crossbred lambs. The data for the fattening study were obtained from 8 F_1 and 10 B_1 crossbred lambs. Five male lambs from each genotype were slaughtered to determine the slaughter and carcass characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine \beta-carotene, retinol (Vit A), selenium (Se) and \alpha-tocopherol (Vit E) levels in the sera of blood and milk from cattle with foot and mouth disease (FMD). This research was carried out with the aim of improving the conservation and feed value characteristics of citrus pulps. In order to ensure and improve citrus pulp conservation even for short periods (1 week), several methods intended to inhibit yeast activity were examined. Orange and grapefruit pulps were used as feed materials and three heads of merino male yearlings fitted with rumen cannula were used as animal materials. This study was carried out in Kıvırcık ewes to increase reproductive performance and synchronize oestrus by using progestagen pessaries (40 mg FGA) and different doses of PMSG (0, 500 and 700 IU) during the breeding season. In this study, lipid peroxidation, intracellular, membrane and extracellular antioxidant activities in Turkish Angora goats (Genotype I) and American x Turkish crossbred Angora goats (Genotype II) were investigated, in order to show the effects of genotype on the antioxidative metabolism. Plasma malonlydialdehyde (MDA) levels of Angora goats in different genotype were analyzed to show the effects of free radicals. A total of 473 sera from hens of different age groups and different breeds and a total of 430 eggs were collected from 11 breeders and egg producers in the districts of Adapazarı, Afyon, Ankara and Konya. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), heat-extract (HE) and flagella antigens were tested in the standardizing ELISA technique. Flagella antigen was found useful in the screening of field samples. Of the 48 (10.2%) rapid plate agglutination positive sera, 7 were negative in ELISA. One hundred and seventy-three (36.6%) of the 473 sera and 76 (17.7%) of the 430 egg yolks were found to be positive with ELISA. …

One hundred and twenty thoroughbred breeder mares with endometritis or infertility were investigated for the detection of antibodies to Taylorella equigenitalis by the passive haemagglutination (PHA) test and ELISA between 1997 and 1999 in the Marmara region and the two tests were compared. Fifty-eight (48.33 %) of 120 sera were found to be positive by the PHA test and 52 (43.33%) by ELISA. 22 of the sera were found to be positive by the PHA test reacted at 1/64 titer, 27 at 1/128, 7 at 1/256 and 2 at 1/512 titer. Exposure of buffalo liver and kidney tissue arginases to a 150 w light source from a distance of 8-10 cm, in the presence of 0.05mM methylene blue, caused significant inhibition of arginase activity. It was determined that this inhibition occurred differently in liver and kidney tissues. Arginase activity was spectrophotometrically measured using the Thiosemicarbazide diacetyl-monoxime urea (TDMU) method. Two studies were conducted to evaluate if Fertirelin acetate (an analogue of GnRH) and Gentamycin sulphate would improve pregnancy rate in healthy cows or in nonpregnant cows although they were inseminated three times or more. This investigation was carried out to demonstrate some production traits and egg quality characteristics of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). One hundred female quails were used in the study. The experiment was carried out for six months. Egg production, egg weight, feed consumption and some egg quality characteristics were taken into consideration. Egg quality characteristics were measured at 8-24 weeks of age. In this study, how to obtain high quality sugar beet pulp silage was investigated. The study was conducted at Alata Horticultural Research institute between 1994 and 1996. The aim of the study was to obtain a strong colony by way of supersedure and empty frames, feeding with saccharose syrup and encouraging egg laying of queen bees at the end of summer. According to the results, there were significant differences among treatments in terms of the development of colony population, brood rearing activity and honey yield. Treatments had no significant effect on wax building activity and swarming tendency.

Changes in the level of malondialdehyde (MDA, a degradative product of lipid peroxidation) and in the antioxidant defense system in rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced liver cirrhosis were studied, in order to determine whether there is any relation between these parameters and the disease. Liver cirrhosis was induced in Wistar-Albino rats by carbon tetrachloride (0.15 gr/100 gr body weight) which was injected subcutanously three times a week for six weeks. An Investigation About The Effects Of Insemination Depth, Cervico-Vaginal Mucus Productionand Reflux Of Semen In The Vagina After Insemination In Sheep, Nedi̇m Koşum, Rudolf Wassmuth

The possible influence of factors such as depth of insemination, cervico-vaginal mucus production and reflux of semen in the vagina after insemination in German merinolandrace were considered. Fresh diluted semen was inseminated intracervically. The results obtained for non-return-rate, lambing rate and fecundity are 49.01%, 39.75% and 64.55% respectively. The year had a significant effect (p ² 0.05) on non-return-rate and lambing rate but not on fecundity.The other parameters considered did not affect prolificacy significantly.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of lactation number on milk production and reproduction. Data on milk and reproductive traits in the first five lactations of Holstein cows reared at Bala State Farm were used. The following characteristics were studied: milk yield, lactation duration and dry period. The following reproductive traits were also studied: number of inseminations per conception, service period, gestation period and calving interval. According to the results, in general milk yield increased but lactation duration decreased with increasing lactation number. The effects of isofluran on cardiac performance in dogs with experimental acute hemorrhagic anemia (AHA) were inves-tigated. A local anesthetic agent was administered to dogs in the control group (=2) and isofluran to dogs in the experimental group (n=6). Left ventricle systolic and diastolic blood pressure with filling and ejection time before and 15 min after AHA were deter-mined in all dogs. The effects of some amino acids on arginase activity in cattle rumen tissue were studied. L-amino acids, such as valine, leucine, isoleucine, ornithine, cysteine, proline, lysine inhibited the enzyme activity noncompetitively. On the other hand, histidine and hydroxyproline were not determined to have any inhibitory effect on the enzyme activity. Isoleucine, valine, leucine, cysteine, ornithine were more strongly inhibitory than proline and lysine.
