The effects of 90 Hz and 5 mT EMF on blood Ca^{++}, P^{+++}, Na^{+}, K^{+} and Cl^{-} levels were investigated. For this purpose, 72 Swiss-Albino mice were used. On days 15, 30 and 45, blood was taken from both the experimental and control groups. A statistically significant decrease in the calcium level was only observed on day 30. On days 15 and 45, a statistically significant increase in the phosphorus level was determined. In this study, 120 British male mice, weighing 35-40 g, and 5 months old were used. Three groups, one control (Group I) and two experimental (Groups II and III), were formed. One experimental group (Group II) received 60 Hz and 5 mT, while the other (Group III) received 90 Hz frequency and 5 mT magnetic flux density efficacy electromagnetic field (EMF), between 900 and 1700. As regards fiber diameter quality and yields, Turkish Merinos have proven successful. They have better fertility and meat yields than native species bred in Turkey. It is of significance to know the similarity degree between Turkish Merinos and Deutsches Merinofleischschaf. Various methods of statistical analysis may be employed to determine the similarity degree between related species. One of the methods to be employed is cluster analysis. This study was performed to establish techniques used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and investigate the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in fish and clams. Between June 1998 and June 2000, a total of 46 fish samples including 14 anchovies, 12 whiting, 10 horse mackerel and 10 sardines collected from fish markets in Bursa and a total of 70 clam samples collected from shellfish stations in Sakarya and Kocaeli districts were tested for V. parahaemolyticus. This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the tick species infesting cattle, sheep and goats and their seasonal activities in the Burdur area of Turkey. The study was carried out between 1 September 1999 and 31 August 2000 on animals owned by local farmers in Burdur and 14 surrounding villages. The study centres were visited twice a month. This study was conducted to determine the presence and contamination levels of Listeria spp. in 100 samples of chicken meat, including 40 mince meat samples, 30 meatball samples and 30 burger samples which were retailed fresh in the markets of Ankara. USDA/FSIS suggested methods were used for the isolation and identification of Listeria spp., while the number of Listeria spp. was detected by the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique. In this study, the oviducts of 10 laying hens aged 8 months and 10 oviducts of pullets aged 2 months were comparatively examined. The oviducts of hens consisted of five regions: infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus and vagina. Tissue samples were taken from the five oviduct regions. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin and then cut into 6 micron sections. This study was carried out with a total of 23 animals: two dogs and 21 cats. Appropriate mini-titanium plates and screws were selected with the aid of radiographs the day before the operation. All the animals were anesthesized with xylazine hydrochloride 2.3 mg/kg IM (Rompun, Bayer, Turkey) premedication followed by ketamine hydrochloride 10 mg/kg IM (Ketalar, Eczacıbaşı, Turkey) injection. This research was carried out on 125-day-old Ile de France (IF)X Akkaraman (AK) (G1) male lambs. In the research, the phenotypic parameters of some testis characteristics determined before and after slaughtering were calculated. The aim of this investigation was to compare some quality characteristics of goose-meat salami with those of turkey- and chicken-meat salami in order to determine its suitability for consumption and to able to use goose meat for meat product technology. The pH values of experimental samples were highest in the goose-meat salami and lowest in the turkey-meat salami. Moisture rates of samples produced with a mixture of two kinds of poultry meat were lower than those of the others. In this study Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents were analyzed in liver and muscle tissues of ten fish species (Mullus barbatus, Mugil cephalus, Trachurus trachurus, Pagellus acarne, Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus, Sardinella aurita, Boops boops, Scomber japonicus, Solea solea) caught in the Gulf of Antalya in January, February and March 2000. Cu and Zn contents were found to be 0.51-3.66 mg/kg and 3.17-11.36 mg/kg in fish muscles and 0.83-4.44 mg/kg and 3.97-15.14 mg/kg in liver tissue respectively. This study was carried out to compare the growth, fattening performance and carcass characteristics of Morkaraman (M) and Kıvırcık (K) x (K x M) Bı lambs. Fifty-four M and 57 K x (K x M) Bı male and female lambs were used for growth traits and 18 M and 30 K x (K x M) Bı for fattening traits, and 6 male lambs for slaughter and carcass traits. In this study, a total of 23 humeri of German shepherd puppies of ages between 40 and 100 days were used. It was observed that the proximal and distal epiphyseal regions were not closed and even the epiphysis was partially spongious. The width of the epiphyseal plate and epiphysis were not equal and they reached the same level with age. For the first time in Turkey, renal autotransplantation in 7 cats and renal allotransplantation in 7 cats having blood-crossmatch-compatible donors were performed. Immunosuppression was maintained by a prednisolone-cyclosporin combination in the renal allotransplantation group. All cats in the renal allotransplantation group died during the operation or between 3 and 72 h postoperatively. Two cats in the renal autotransplantation group survived approximately 2 years. Hyperacute or acute rejection findings were not encountered according to perioperative observations, laboratory findings or histopathological evaluations of renal allografts. The aim of this study was to determine immunogenic structures by immunoblotting in thermophilic Campylobacter strains isolated from chickens. The bands obtained from C. jejuni strains were found to be distributed between 10.8 and 116.5 kD by SDS-PAGE analysis of whole cell proteins. The bands 78, 63, 52, 48.5, 43.5, 29.8, 25.6, 22, 18.5, 17.2 and 16.5 kD were detected as the major common bands in all C. jejuni strains. Electrophoretic analysis of C. coli strains revealed that protein band profiles ranged between 10.3 and 118 kD, and 76, 63-62, 52, 48.5, 44 and 30.5 kD bands were all major …

Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 was found to produce approximately a 65-kDa \alpha-amylase enzyme. A gene was isolated encoding \alpha-amylase activity that corresponded to this size and was inserted into pUC18 plasmid which was transferred to Escherichia coli. An approximately 1.7kbp fragment, which contains a whole \alpha-amylase gene, was excised and inserted into pUB110 and then transferred into the different B. subtilis strains including RSKK246, RSKK243, RSKK244, YB886 and ORBAM. The study was conducted between February 1999 and June 1999, involving 140 diarrhoeic calves from 8 different localities (Kars-Central district, Karakaş, Bulanık, Karakale, Hacıhalil, Boğazköy, Susuz-Central district, and Arpaçay). This study was carried out in Malatya and vicinity to determine the seroprevalance of Babesia ovis in sheep. A total of 220 sheep sera were tested against B. ovis using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). In addition, peripheral blood smears from these sheep were prepared and examined for B. ovis. The ELISA test showed that 55.9% of sheep were seropositive for B. ovis infection. The infection rate was 49.2% in sheep which were 1-12 months old and 59% in sheep which were older than one year. In the microscopic examination of blood smears, four out of 220 sheep were found …

An 8-year-old cow admitted to the Veterinary Faculty, Internal Medicine Clinic (University of Fırat, Elazığ/TURKEY), was diagnosed with intussusception, and the diagnosis was confirmed by experimental laparotomy. Intussusception was corrected by enterectomy and intestinal anastomosis. Defecation on the day following the operation indicated normal intestinal flow. The animal was kept under observation for ten days after the operation, and had a full recovery.

This study was conducted in two stages to determine the ensiled qualities of corn, alfalfa and sugar beet pulp, and the effects on food intake and nutrient digestibility of corn and alfalfa silages used alone, together and with sugar beet pulp silage in lambs. In the first stage, corn, alfalfa and sugar beet pulp were ensiled and silos were opened after 45 days. Silage samples were taken for determination of silage quality and the samples were analysed. The sera collected from 152 sheep older than one year old sheep in various parts of Yozgat Province were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Sabin- Feldman dye test. Out of the 152 sera examined, 69 (45.4%) were seropositive at different dilutions (34 samples at 1/16, 21 at 1/64, 11 at 1/256 and 3 at 1/1024).

A Study On Direct And Indirect Effects Of Some Factors On Weaning Weight Of A Awassi Lambs, Mehmet Topal, Nuri̇ni̇sa Esenbuğa

The correlation coefficients divided into direct and indirect effects among ewe weight in the mating period and lambing, birth weight and weaning age of lamb, and weaning weight of Awassi lambs raised in Erzurum conditions were determined in this study. In path analysis, the direct and indirect impact of birth weight and weaning age of lamb on weaning weight were found to be highly significant. Partial correlation and standardized partial regression coefficients among weaning weight, birth weight and weaning age of lamb were also observed to be highly significant.
