We studied the erythrocyte aggregability for different animals using fractal analysis. Red blood cell aggregation is an important component of whole blood viscosity and is the major cause of the non-Newtonian flow properties of blood. To understand the aggregation process many models have been proposed in the literature. Since aggregates formed by aggregation have a fractal structure, mathematical descriptions of their irregular structure can be obtained using fractal geometry. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of antibodies to ALV-J in broilers and broiler breeders. For this, 5 broiler units and 1 broiler breeding unit in the Marmara region were visited. Seventy 4-6 -week-old chicks from the broiler units, consisting of 14 chicks from each broiler unit, were selected. Seventeen chickens from the broiler breeding unit were also selected. The chicks from the broiler units were necropsied and all internal organs were checked for the presence of tumors. This experiment was conducted to determine the feasibility of cuttlefish backbone as a new xenograft in the treatment of bone defects and its therapeutic effectiveness. Following the administration of general anaesthesia to 20 one-year-old male New Zealand rabbits, traumatic defective areas (5 mm in diameter) were experimentally induced at the proximal and distal metaphyses of both femurs. The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition, digestibility, in situ N kinetics, and by-pass protein contents of 4 different common vetch varieties grown under irrigation. Four different common vetch varieties (Emir 20/1, Nilüfer 17/1, 28/1, and Uludağ 31/4) with different characteristics were selected. Hydatidosis, caused by hydatid cysts, is a widespread and hazardous disease in humans and animals worldwide. The disease is very common in Turkey, causing serious economic losses. In this study, the seroprevalence of hydatidosis was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescence antibody technique (IFAT). A total of 597 serum samples were collected from cattle of various breeds and ages in 8 provinces in Eastern Turkey. The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between the sizes of the corpus luteum (CL) with or without a cavity throughout the estrous cycle and progesterone (P_4) levels in cows. Images of the CL were obtained by ultrasonography at intervals of 24 h in 10 Holstein cows after their first postpartum estrus. Progesterone levels were measured by radioimmunassay (RIA). The duration of the estrous cycle was determined to be short (13 days), normal (approximately 22 days) and long (30 days) in 1, 7, and 2 cows, respectively. There was a massive outbreak of watery diarrhoea in kids aged 5 to 15 days in a goat herd in Gönen district of Isparta province in Turkey in May 2003. The presence of Cryptosporidium parvum was investigated in the faeces of 130 diarrhoeic kids and 3 dead kids in this herd. All of the faecal samples were also examined for rotavirus and coronavirus. C. parvum were detected in all of the faecal specimens. Coronavirus and rotavirus were not detected in any of the animals.

A total of 272 specimens of tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) caught in Lake Mogan (Ankara) were examined for the presence of the plerocercoids of Ligula intestinalis, and growth parameters such as age composition, age-length, age-weight and weight-length relationship and condition factor were calculated seperately for both infected and non-infected fish. The only marked difference was observed in value b between infected (2.745) and non-infected (3.014) fish.

A severe neurologic syndrome accompained by intense neuronal pigmentation was described in sheep exposed to Asphodelus aestivus in Turkey. The clinical signs were similar in all the sheep affected, and the condition was usually characterized by progressive paresis, ataxia and convulsion. At necropsy, yellowish-brown discoloration in the brain and spinal cord were consistently seen. A microscopical examination revealed abundant yellowish-brown pigment granules in the cytoplasm of the larger neurons. Similar pigment granules were also observed in extraneuronal tissues. A Study On The Presence Of Leucocytozoonosis In Wild Birds Of Burdur District, Özlem Özmen, Mehmet Haligür, Bayram Ali̇ Yukari

From 2000 to 2004, 53 wild birds (16 pigeons, 16 quails, 10 pheasants, 4 partridges, 3 stock doves, and 1 ibis, peacock, owl chick and falcon) were examined grossly and microscopically at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Akdeniz. Thirty-seven of these birds were dead. Blood samples were taken from the 16 live birds before euthanasia. Tissue samples were also taken for histopathological examination during the necropsies. Leucocytozoon marchouxi was diagnosed in 5 pigeons during the microscopic examinations of blood samples and tissue sections, whereas 1 owl chick died from acute severe L. ziemanni infection.

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of dietary hazelnut meal supplementation on the meat composition of quails. A total of 312 one-day-old Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into 6 equal groups. Six different levels of hazelnut meal (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%) were included in their diets. The aims of this study were the isolation of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from poultry and serotyping of the isolates and field sera by agar gel precipitation (AGP) test. For the isolation 257 chickens and 214 turkeys were used and for the AGP test 333 chickens and 250 turkeys were used. O. rhinotracheale was isolated from the sinus discharge of 3 broiler breeders at 37, 42 and 46 weeks of age. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the growth characteristics of Kıvırcık sheep and describe non-genetic factors influencing their expression. Data were collected from 6 flocks including a nucleus flock and 5 breeders’ flocks (2 in mountainous and 3 in lowland villages). Flocks raised in extensive conditions were kept in pastures throughout the year. The body weight of ewes at parturition and the birth and weaning weight of lambs were recorded during 2 lambing seasons (1999-2000 and 2000-2001). The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

The effects of homeopathy on pseudopregnancy in bitches were investigated. Thirty clinically pseudopregnant bitches were used. Fifteen dogs were treated by homeopathy and the remaining animals received placebo treatment. Thuja D30 globules, which contain Thuja Occidentalis, were given orally (8 globules, 3 times a day) as a homeopathic agent. Clinical response was evaluated every 5 days. Maximum duration of the treatment was 3 weeks. Physical changes in mammary glands and behavioral response were evaluated during the treatment. This study was conducted to determine some histochemical properties of the ceruminous glands located in the meatus acusticus externus in cats and dogs. Ten cats and 10 dogs of various breeds were used as the study materials. To determine the properties of the secretions of the ceruminous glands in the meatus acusticus externus of cats and dogs, the periodic acid Schiff (PAS) stain was used for neutral mucosubstances and glycogen, while the Alcian blue stain (pH 2.5) was applied for the presence of acidic mucosubstances. Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. It is inevitable to encounter many diseases of ostriches in Turkey as a consequence of the rapid expansion of ostrich farming and flocks in this country. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the lungs and air sacs of a 3-month-old, male, blue-neck ostrich. In postmortem examination, the ingestion of a large amount of gravel was noted. The accumulated gravel had led to an occlusion of the passage between the proventriculus and gizzard. This work appears to be the first report of aspergillosis and gastric impaction developing together and leading to death in an ostrich.

The organs of an aborted equine fetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. Diffuse, mild cellular infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells was observed in the lamina propria of the intestine. In addition, bacterial colonies were seen in the intestinal content, wall of intestine and liver. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated in pure culture from all organs. This is the first report of the isolation of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus from an aborted equine fetus in Turkey.

Unilateral uterine prolapse that occurred immediately after parturition was diagnosed in a 15-month-old cat brought to the clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. Depending on clinical and ultrasonographic examination findings, the other uterine horn was though to be invaginated into the prolapsed horn. To purpose of treatment, ovariohysterectomy was performed. During laparotomy, the non-pregnant right uterine horn was seen to be invaginated into the pregnant uterine horn.

Lameness incidence in Turkey has been reported to be between 13% and 58%, which is similar to that of other countries where 4% and 55% incidence rates have been reported. Human and canine visceral leishmaniasis cases have been reported from Kuşadası, a town in western Turkey, since 1993. In order to better understand the epidemiology of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanVL) in the region, we aimed: (i) to determine the prevalence of CanVL in Kuşadası using a randomly selected dog population and (ii) to measure the effect of case control on the prevalence of the disease. The length and weight distribution of flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus Pallas, 1811) were 14.2-34.1 cm and 28.879-611.0 g, respectively. The samples were distributed between the 0 and VII age groups. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for flounder were L_t = 41.241[1-e^{-0.161(t+3.240)}] for females, L_t= 33.567[1-e^{-0.181(t+3.525)}] for males and L_t = 40.577[1-e^{-0.142(t+3.105)}] for the sexes combined. Reproduction took place from December to March but peaked in December. Two recruitment periods were determined for flounder: the first was January to July, and the second August to November. The proportions of recruitment in the first and second periods were 68.13% and 31.87%, respectively.

The effects of udder and teat measurements on milk yield in Brown Swiss Cows were studied. The differences among the means for front and rear teat length, front and rear teat diameter, front and rear udder height, distance between front teats and mammary type scores in different lactation numbers were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Front and rear teat length, and front and rear udder height after milking were higher than before milking. Front and rear teat diameter, distance between front teats, distance between rear teats and distance between front and rear teats after milking were lower than before milking. Furthermore, 305-day milk yield and milk yield per milking were significantly positively correlated with distance between front and rear teats and mammary type scores before milking (P < 0.001). The mean values before milking for front and rear teat length, front and rear teat diameter, front and rear teat udder height, distance between front teats, distance between rear teats, distance between front and rear teats and mammary type scores at general lactation were 59.45 and 49.72 mm, 22.14 and 21.53 mm, 47.96 and 47.59 cm, 12.29 cm, 7.76 cm, 9.58 cm and 23.65, respectively. In conclusion, teat and udder measurements and mammary type scores significantly affected milk yield.

Stages of oocyte maturation in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) gonads after LHRHa hormonal treatment were investigated. LHRHa was injected into sea bass broodstock with an oocyte diameter of 527-580 µm. A second injection was given 12 h after the first injection. For each injection a dose of 10 µg/kg was used. Bioaccumulation of some heavy metals (Cd, Fe, Zn and Cu) in fresh parts of 2 bivalvia species (Pinctada radiata Leach, 1814 and Brachidontes pharaonis Fischer, 1870) was examined in samples collected between May, 1999, and April, 2000, in Akkuyu Bay (İçel, Turkey). The Effects Of Cadmium On Levels Of Glucose In Serum And Glycogen Reserves In The Liver And Muscle Tissues Of Cyprinus Carpio (L., 1758), Bedi̇i̇ Ci̇ci̇k, Kenan Engi̇n

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) was exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mgl^{-1}) for 10 days. The levels of serum glucose and glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were measured both in fish exposed and not exposed to Cd. The levels of glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd compared with the levels measured in the control groups. The decrease in glycogen levels in the liver and muscle tissues under the highest metal concentration (1.0 mgl^{-1}) were 24% and 29%, respectively. The blood serum glucose levels of fish exposed to Cd were significantly (P < 0.05) increased compared with the levels measured in the control groups. This increase was correlated with the increase in water Cd concentrations.

Blood samples were collected from 305 cows in the province of Şanlıurfa for determining the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum. Serum samples were analyzed for antibodies against N. caninum antigen using a commercially competitive inhibition (CI) ELISA. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 23 of the 305 (7.5%) cow sera based on ELISA test results. With regard to seropositivity, no significant difference was observed among the origin, animal breed, and age (P > 0.05).
