The aim of the study is to determine the effects of aflatoxin and sodium bentonite given alone and in combination on some of blood electrolyte levels in broiler chicks. For this aim, 72 male one-day-old Avian broiler chicks were used. The animals were separated into 6 groups, as one control (Group 1) and the others trial (Groups 2 to 6). The ultrastructure of the ovarian follicle and the levels of the ovarian 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), estradiol-17\beta (E_{2}), 17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17\alpha-OHP), and progesterone (P) were studied during cortical alveoli, vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation in Chalcalburnus tarichi. The microvilli began to form on the oocyte surface during cortical alveoli phase and during vitellogenesis, came into contact in the pore canals of the zona radiata with microvilli formed from granulosa cells. While the special thecal cells posses specific organelles, which are characteristic of steroid-producing cells, namely, mitochondria with tubular cristae, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets, the granulosa cells contain organelles typical for protein-secreting cells. …

Heat production from chickens and other resources inside the broiler house is a major problem for the broiler industry. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) as well as airflow and broiler physiology directly affect heat production in broiler houses. The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is known as one of the economically important species in the classis Cephalopoda. In this study, from October 2000 to April 2002, 674 cuttlefish were collected monthly from the surroundings of Homa lagoon (in the Aegean Sea). In order to determine reproductive behaviors and spawning season of S. officinalis species, the gonad stages of both sexes and the seasonal gonadosomatic index values were determined. It was observed that the spawning period of S. officinalis covers the whole year with two maximum peaks in March and June.

The present study was conducted to determine prevalence of Haemobartonella felis in Van cats. 121 Van cats (82 female, 39 male, aged 1-9 years) were the materials of the study. To determine biochemical and haematological parameters, 2 ml blood with and without anticoagulant were taken according to technique from vena cephalica antebrachii. H. felis was detected in blood smears preparations of 18 (14.88%) by Papenheim staining. The present study aimed to determine the relative catch efficiencies of two different fish traps in İskenderun Bay. Trap model A had an entrance supported by a hoop, whilst the entrance of model B was unsupported. Fieldwork was carried out in Pirinçlik-Madenli Bight (İskenderun Bay) between 15 July and 15 November 2001. Forty basket traps were set each day during the 124-day study period. In this study, chemical composition and energy values of some forages, raw materials and commercial feeds commonly used in the Marmara Region for ruminants were determined. Samples of sunflower meal, barley, wheat, oat, corn, wheat bran, grass hay, vetch hay, alfalfa hay and compound feeds were collected for evaluation. The samples of feed were analyzed for their chemical composition. Gas production capacity, in vitro organic matter digestibility and energy values of feeds were studied by Hohenheim Gas Test. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter species in broiler chicken faecal samples and on their carcasses. The possible routes of carcass contamination were assessed from slaughterhouse to market. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of Campylobacter isolates from broilers. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 393 (91.8%) of 428 samples examined. A total of 53 out of 57 rectal swab samples was positive for thermophilic Campylobacter spp. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 93.6%, 92.9% and 91.3% of broiler carcass, faecal and caecal samples, respectively. In this study genetic and morphologic structure of the sea-bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, in Turkish coastal waters were studied. Total 120 individuals were sampled in equal numbers from the Black, Marmara, Aegean and North-eastern Mediterranean Seas. In genetic analyses, four-enzyme systems (G3PDH*, ME*, MDH*, PGI*) were assayed, representing 9 loci (G3PDH-1*, G3PDH-2*, MDH-1*, MDH-2*, MDH-3*, ME*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGI-3*), 2 of which were polymorphic (G3PDH-2*, PGI-3*). Fisher's exact test revealed that there were no genetic differences between populations using 9 loci. Nei's genetic distance was 0.0001 between the Black Sea and Mediterranean samples. European eels (Anguilla anguilla), collected from the Ceyhan River (Adana, Turkey) in 2002, were examined in terms of the presence of swimbladder nematoda. The existence of infection with Anguillicola crassus, a pathogenic swimbladder parasite, was identified in 50 out of 64 specimens. The total number of parasites, prevalence (%), parasite abundance and mean intensity of parasite values of July and November samples were 93, 82.86%, 2-7, 3.31 ± 1.32 and 56, 72.41%, 1-5, 3.20 ± 1.30, respectively. There was no significant histopathological destruction in the internal organs of the infected eels.

The aim of this study was the determination and comparative evaluation of the seroprevalence of Brucella canis infection in dog sera obtained from different dog shelters located in İstanbul and İzmir provinces by tube agglutination test (TAT), 2-mercapto-ethanol tube agglutination test (2ME-TAT) and ELISA. A total of 362 serum samples were obtained from 8 different dog shelters in İstanbul and İzmir provinces. The dogs were temporarily kept in these shelters. Three hundred bovine milk samples with mastitis were used. Eighty-five (28.33%) strains were identified as Staphylococcus aureus whereas 60 (20.00%) strains were isolated as coagulase negative staphylococcus. Bacteriological cultures of coagulase negative staphylococcus were identified as 20 (33.33%) strains of S. hyicus, 16 (26.66%) strains of S. chromogenes, 9 (15.00%) strains of S. epidermidis, 5 (8.33%) strains of S. haemolyticus, 4 (6.66%) strains of S. sciuri, 3 (5.00%) strains of S. lentis and 3 (5.00%) strains of S. cohnii subsp. cohnii. The aim of the present study was to compare the liver function of cows with retained placenta (n = 21) with that of control post-partum cows (n = 12). Liver biopsies of the cows with retained placenta showed that the mean percentage of fat in the liver parenchyma was 32.5%. The objective of this research was to compare some chemical and physical characteristics of mechanically deboned and hand deboned turkey meat and beef. Samples were analyzed for proximate composition, cholesterol, TBA, calcium and iron contents, hunter colour parameters and fatty acid composition. Deboning method affected chemical composition of beef and turkey meat. Mechanical deboning resulted higher cholesterol values and calcium and iron content. In this study, the behaviour responses of the crossbred lambs [F_2 (German Black-Headed Mutton x Merino) x F_1 (Chios x Kıvırcık)] were compared with the Kıvırcık lambs in intensive conditions and the effects of genotype, sex and observation period on the behaviours displayed were investigated. The data were collected from 10 (5 male + 5 female) Kıvırcık and 10 (5 male + 5 female) crossbred lambs, which were weaned at the age of 2-2.5 months. The effect of genotype was found significant on the behaviours of feed consumption (P < 0.01), activities towards the bedding material (P < 0.05), rumination (P < 0.01), lying (P < 0.01), oral stereotypic behaviours (OSB) (P < 0.01) and behaviours towards animal (BTA) (P < 0.01). Behaviours towards other animals and oral stereotypic behaviours in the crossbred lambs were 50% and 27% more than the Kıvırcık lambs, respectively. Significant differences in terms of the activities towards the bedding material (P < 0.05), rumination (P < 0.01) and lying (P < 0.01) behaviours were determined between the male and female lambs. It was seen that the male lambs were more active in the breeding area. The effects of observation period were found significant on feeding (P < 0.01), drinking (P < 0.01), rumination (P < 0.01), lying (P < 0.01), standing (P < 0.01), oral stereotypic behaviours (P < 0.01) and behaviours towards animals (P < 0.05). Although the crossbred lambs were more superior for fattening program in terms of live weight gains, they showed more abnormal behaviours (OSB and BTA), which are the signs of stress, in the limited breeding area, depend on the lessening of the area by the rise in their live weights.

The effects of melatonin hormone on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase enzyme purified by using Sepharose 4B-L tyrosine-sulfanylamide affinity gel chromatography were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Carbonic anhydrase from Oncorhynchus mykiss erythrocytes was purified with a specific activity of ~400 EU/mg protein and ~200-fold in a yield of ~20. Melatonin did not inhibit carbonic anhydrase enzyme in vitro. Carbonic anhydrase activity of the control group was determined as 1597.7 ± 429.0 EU/g hemoglobin in vivo. In this study, carried out between November 2000 and October 2001, the annual spawning period, first maturity length, length frequency distribution and length/weight relationship of Parapenaeus longirostris that inhabit most commonly the Sea of Marmara were investigated. Analysis of the data obtained from this study revealed that although the mature individuals with fully developed eggs were found almost every month throughout the year, the highest gonadosomatic index values were obtained in September, October, December, April and May. This study was undertaken to determine changes in the flora of lactic acid bacteria during the ripening of Şavak tulum cheese and to identify the major species playing an important role in the ripening process. Tulum cheese was produced from raw sheep milk using traditional methods and ripened in plastic containers at 4 °C for 90 days. The aim of this study was to determine the alpha naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) activity in the peripheral blood leukocytes in Angora rabbits. The heparinized blood samples obtained from 10 healthy adult Angora rabbits were used. ANAE stainings were applied at different pH values for the determination of ANAE activities. The ANAE positive reactions were observed in the T lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils and platelets. The ANAE positive lymphocyte rate was found to be 68.2%.

Honeybee colonies from Turkey, Naxcivan (Azerbaijan) and Austria were studied for morphometric and electrophoretic variation and for comparison among different subspecies. Out of six enzyme systems, four were found to be polymorphic with 14 allozymes. Discriminant function analysis of 10 morphometric variables resulted in a total of four groups. Cluster analysis of electrophoretic data showed a similar type of groupings. Among the four polymorphic loci, Mdh-1 showed the highest and Est-3 the lowest differentiation among populations.

Changes in proximate composition and amino acid content of frozen (-18 °C) wild sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L. 1758) fillets were investigated during 9 months of storage. Initial protein and lipid contents were 19.75% and 1.22%, respectively, and changed to 19.31% and 3.58% in the 9th month of storage. Amino acid analyses were performed at intervals in the initial, third, sixth and ninth months of storage. The initial ratio of essential/nonessential amino acid (g amino acid/16 g N) was 0.75. Respiratory diseases are very common in poultry. Bordetella avium and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale are among the major microorganisms responsible for these diseases. The study was conducted to investigate the seroprevalence of O. rhinotracheale and B. avium in Aydın. Two hundred seventy-six chicken and 360 turkey serum samples were collected from poultry with respiratory disease suspicion in poultry enterprises around the city and samples were then examined for the presence of B. avium and O. rhinotracheale by commercial ELISA kits. Copper toxicosis (CT) is a common autosomal recessive disorder in dogs. Recently, the CT locus was closely linked to microsatellite marker C04107. Currently, the gene underlying CT is unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of matrix loss on regulating chondrocyte phenotype, and the synthesis and activation of collagenolytic enzymes. IL1 was used to enhance matrix breakdown in bovine nasal cartilage explants. Change in matrix composition and its effects on chondrocyte morphology were investigated using histochemical techniques. In bovine nasal explants, chondrocytes responded to IL1 to manifest 2 distinct patterns of cell shape exhibiting either pyknotic or enlarged nuclei. This study investigated the selectivity of a 40 mm mesh size polyethylene codend commonly used by Turkish demersal trawlers. Seasonal selectivity data were collected for annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis), which is the most abundant discard species in the catch composition in Gülbahçe Bay. Four sets of data were collected in spring (4-18 April 2002), summer (10-25 July 2002), autumn (26 September-2 October 2002) and winter (22-23 January 2003).
