A 4-year-old sexually intact male German shepherd with a 3-month history of chronic watery diarrhea was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Dehydration and serum biochemistry revealed hypoalbuminemia, and fecal material contained a large quantity of round arthroconidia that were microscopically observed. A specimen was submitted for fungal culture and yielded a white to cream-colored subsurface colony. Microorganisms derived from the colony exhibited chains of smooth, septate hyaline hyphae that were producing 1-celled arthroconidia. Geotrichum candidum was thus identified. The aim of this study was to determine the dominant aerobic bacterial community of sea bass larvae during their weaning period in 2 different marine hatcheries in Muğla-Bodrum region. Samplings were made in January, March, and May 2005. Larvae and water samples were diluted in certain ratios and were inoculated to Marine Agar, TCBS Agar, Pseudomonas Agar, King Bee Agar, MRS agar, Blood Agar and Plate Count Agar, in that order. Our objective was to study the effects of oral ochratoxin A (OT-A) intoxication in rabbits. New Zealand white rabbits of 8 weeks age, weighing 350-400 g, were utilized for the study. Rabbits were allotted randomly to 3 groups. Group 1 (6 animals) served as control. Groups 2 and 3 (12 animals each) were fed diets supplemented with 1000 and 2000 ppb OT-A, respectively, for 8 weeks. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on fatty acid composition and key enzymes of fatty acid oxidation in liver and muscle of geese. A total of 192 1-day-old geese were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary groups, and were fed for 56 days on diets containing 2.5% soybean oil (group A, control group) or 2.0% soybean oil with 0.5% CLA (group B), 1.0% soybean oil with 1.5% CLA (group C), and 2.5 % CLA (group D). Geese fed CLA had a decreased abdominal fat percentage (AFP) (P < 0.01) compared with the control. It was observed that dietary CLA levels had a significant effect on the body weight, weight gain, feed conversion rate (FCR) (P < 0.05), and feed intake (P < 0.01). Fatty acid composition showed a significant increase of the biologically active cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, and cis-12 CLA isomers in both liver and muscle of geese fed CLA (P < 0.01). Dietary CLA led to an increase (P < 0.01) in saturated fatty acid (SFA) and a reduction in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) (P < 0.05) concentrations in both liver and muscle. In liver, dietary CLA increased (P < 0.05) acyl CoA oxidase (ACO) activity, but did not affect carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) activity compared with the control. CPT-I activity was significantly increased by 2.5% dietary CLA in muscle, where ACO activity was decreased at 1.5% CLA level. The results obtained suggested that geese can successfully incorporate CLA in both liver and muscle, which could be beneficial in the human diet, through provision of bioactive fatty acids with no detrimental effects on n-3 PUFA levels.

The present study provides the results from a comparative study of the 3 commonly used methods for total protein (TP) measurement. The experiments were carried out with 6 dogs (4-7 year-old, weighing 12.8 ± 1.4 kg). Five blood samples were obtained by saphena venepuncture from all dogs, during the time course of the experimentally induced infection with Staphylococcus intermedius, administered subcutaneously at a dose rate of 5 ml of 1.10^9 CFU/ml within 14 days. Gaoyou duck (Chinese indigenous breed) is famous for double-yolked egg. In the present study, SNP of prolactin (PRL) gene intron 1 of Gaoyou duck was detected by PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing. The results indicated that there were 2 Dra I recognition sites in intron 1 of the PRL gene, but only 1 was of polymorphism. A T/C mutation at the position of the 1326 bp of the PRL gene was found by DNA sequencing, and resulted in 3 genotypes AA, AB, and BB. The frequencies of genotype BB and allele B were the highest. In order to study the prevalence and etiology of subclinical mastitis a bacteriological survey on 16 Awassi dairy sheep flocks in southern Turkey was conducted. A total of 1458 milk samples from 729 Awassi ewes in mid-lactation were tested with the California mastitis test (CMT). Samples from 170 (11.7%) glands and 135 (18.5%) sheep had positive CMT results. Bacteria were isolated from 93 (6.4%) udder halves and 82 (11.2%) ewes. Positive CMT and bacteriological results were combined to define subclinical mastitis. The data were from 21 bullocks consisting of 7 Holstein, 7 Piedmont × Holstein, and 7 Limousin × Holstein cross-breed cattle reared and fattened in the closed tie-stall experiment barns of the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, Turkey. Ulcerative lymphangitis, or pigeon fever, is a bacterial infection of the lymphatic vessels of the skin in horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. A wild boar (Sus scrofa) about 2 years old was brought to our parasitology laboratory from Orhaneli region, Bursa province. It was examined for ectoparasites and 32 lice collected from the animal's head were inspected and identified as Haematopinus suis. Five of them were found to be as nymphs, whereas 27 were adults. This paper is the first report of H. suis found in Bursa province, Turkey.

The present study examined the mammary glands and supramammary lymph nodes of cows with a history of abortion due to Brucella abortus, and presents the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological results. The study included 11 Brucella-seropositive cows that aborted during their first gestation. Histopathologically, the mammary glands showed lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic interstitial mastitis. The lymph nodes had lymphofollicular hyperplasia and medullary plasmacytosis. Immunohistochemistry results showed brucellar antigens, predominantly in the cytoplasm of macrophages, and neutrophils in the intralobular interstitium and periductal stroma in the udders of 3 cows. The prevalence, intensity, and pathology of a Myxobolus sp. affecting the kidneys of cultured Diplodus puntazzo C. during the period 2003-2005 are described. The study included data collected from the largest farm in southern Greece where a high rate of mortality due to myxosporean infection occurred. Sharp snout seabream reared in sea cages in southern Greece underwent microbiological, parasitological, and histological examinations, while measurement and identification of parasites was performed immediately after sampling. Two stocking densities (20 and 40 fry/80-l tank) with 4 feeding rates (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% body weight/day) were used to determine the optimum feeding level for himri barbel fry during a 60-day culture period. Water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and total ammonia nitrogen) were monitored during the experiment. Final body weight and specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly lower with the 2.5% feeding rate than with the others, at both stocking densities; however, no significant differences were observed between the other feeding rates and between stocking densities. This study was conducted to determine some properties of set and stirred type yoghurts containing 0.5% and 1% garlic (Allium sativum L.) during storage period of 28 days at 4±1 °C. Some microbiological, physical, chemical, and sensory properties of yoghurts were determined in days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of the storage period. Coliform bacteria were not detected in all samples during the storage period ( 0.05) and sensory scores of yoghurts decreased during the storage period. White muscle disease (WMD) is a world-wide nutritional disease of all animal species characterised by degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscles. In the present study we determined the cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in hearts of the lambs with WMD (n = 15). Eight clinically healthy lambs served as control. Creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were analysed for both groups. cTnI levels were measured by a commercially available ELISA kit. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the primary agent of enzootic pneumonia in pigs. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of M. hyopneumoniae in pigs raised in Turkey. Samples were obtained from the lungs of 286 pigs, which had already been separated from the carcasses at slaughter. Lung tissues were homogenized in 5 ml of Friis medium, the suspensions were inoculated into Friis medium, and then incubated at 37 °C until they developed an acid color change or for 21 days. A 12-week-old, intact, male German shepherd dog was presented with a history of regurgitation since weaning to solid food. The dog was emaciated, and the cervical esophagus of the animal was palpable as a flaccid and air-filled cavity. Contrast radiography of esophagus revealed contrast material accumulation in the thoracic esophagus craniodorsal to the heart. A diagnosis of vascular ring anomaly was made and surgical correction of the defect was decided. The dog died during the preoperative period despite supportive treatment in intensive care unit. Necropsy findings confirmed a diagnosis of persistent right aortic arch.

A 1-year-old male Dalmatian dog with urinary obstruction was examined on an emergency basis. The macroscopic urine examination, direct radiography, positive contrast cystography, and ultrasonography revealed urolithiasis. Histology of the vesica urinaria showed urolith particles deeply embedded in a membrane on the mucosa. This is not commonly seen in dogs with urolithiasis.

The study was designed to determine the health status of neonatal calves on dairy farms in Kars district. It involved retrospective questioning (2001 calving season) and prospective follow up (2002 calving season). The localities and farms were selected from a list using a 2-stage stratified random sampling method. Farms were weekly visited by authors during the 2002 calving season for clinical problems. A total of 624 calves, born on 45 farms from 7 different localities, were followed up in the 2002 calving season. The Relationship Between Morphometric And Long Bone Measurements Of The Morkaraman Sheep, Hasan Alpak, Vedat Onar, Rifat Mutuş

In this study, a total of 40 adult female Morkaraman sheep, a local Turkish breed, were used. After taking their body measurements and carcass weights, the meat was cut off the bones; the skeletal bones were then removed, macerated and every long bone weighed. Thereafter, morphometric measurements of the long bones were taken. The coefficients obtained from the correlation of osteometric measurements and morphological data were in general low (r < 0.600), though certain relationships were found to be significant. Regression of morphological variables on osteometric measurements was statistically significant. By this, regression formulas were obtained which can contribute to predict the visible morphology in zooarchaeological studies. Length measurements would be more suitable for predicting shoulder height than using width measurements of the long bone. On the other hand, body and carcass weights and chest circle would be determined more efficiently by measuring the width of long bones (Bp, Bd, SD). Furthermore, the humero-femoral index formula can be used to identify sheep in an archaeological bone collection of several animals.

Measurements of biomarker responses in fish from contaminated sites could provide valuable data for environmental risk assessment. The pharmacokinetics of gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, kanamycin, and apramycin were investigated after single intravenous administration in goats. their antimicrobial activity against 30 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from goats was also studied. On the base of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data, a comparison between antibiotics was made. All 5 antibiotics showed a marked high in vitro antibacterial activity. The lowest MIC_{90} values were those of amikacin and the highest one was of kanamycin. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in the eastern Anatolian border province of Van and its villages and to collect the preliminary data required for programs for the prevention and control of this zoonotic disease. The tuberculin test was performed on 210 cattle. Nasal swab and milk samples were obtained from the animals tested. The aim of the present study was to estimate (co) variance components for birth weights of Karacabey Merino lambs. The model fitted included direct genetic, maternal genetic, and direct-maternal genetic covariance and maternal permanent environmental effects. Data and pedigree information of the Karacabey Merino sheep used in this study were collected at the Marmara Animal Breeding Research Institute from 1998 to 2002. Variance components for birth weights were estimated by the MTDFREML. A direct heritability estimate of 0.08 and a maternal heritability estimate of 0.05 were obtained for birth weight. Effects of melatonin on the levels of antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GRd), and malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation marker, in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. The results showed that melatonin statistically activated the CAT, POD, and GRd activity (P < 0.05). Moreover, MDA levels were significantly decreased as a result of melatonin treatment (P < 0.01).

A reference strain Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, sensitive and resistant strains of E. coli, isolated from chickens with colibacillosis were tested. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of modulators of ABC efflux transporters in eukaryotic cells cyclosporine A and quercetine on MIC values of danofloxacin mesylate. MIC values of danofloxacine mesylate against the chosen strains were determined with or without modulators at concentrations of 25 \mu M, 5 \mu M, 1 \mu M, and 0.2 \mu M by macro broth dilution method.
