Agreement Models For Multiraters, Tülay Saraçbaşi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Agreement between 2 or more independent raters evaluating the same items and same scale can be measured by kappa coefficient. In recent years, modeling agreement among raters rather than summarizing indices has been preferred. In this study, the disadvantages of kappa are reviewed. Agreement models are introduced and these models are applied to a real data set. Materials and methods: Three pathologists classified each of 118 slides in terms of carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix, based on the most involved lesions. Using log-linear agreement models, agreement between 3 pathologists according to their evaluations was investigated. Results: Coefficient of …

Material and methods: Metaphase chromosomes were prepared from amniocytes for prenatal cases and from lymphocytes for their fathers according to the standard methods. Results: In all cases, the analysis of all GTG-banded metaphases showed satellites on the long arms of chromosome Y as 46, XYqs karyotype. The indications for cytogenetic study were advanced maternal age and abnormal ultrasonographic findings with increased risk in the first trimester screening test. Cytogenetic studies of the fathers revealed that the Yqs were inherited. The satellites were positively stained …

Materials and methods: The literature related with the field was reviewed and interpreted from an ethical perspective. Results: It is presented medically doubtful solutions via television and the internet. Several weight-loss drugs are introduced to the market without adequate controls and then have to be withdrawn after having caused serious damage to the …

GGT is an enzyme present in serum and most cell surfaces. It is used as an oxidative stress marker. Increased serum GGT levels are implicated in increased blood pressure and the progression of hypertension. GGT may also have a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: Prehypertension was identified as systolic blood pressure ranging from 120 to 139 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ranging from 80 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Hyperhomocysteinemia was induced in rabbits using methionine. Ocular blood flow changes were examined by color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU). Materials and methods: Fifty New Zealand rabbits were divided into 5 groups. Groups 1-4 received one of the following chemicals: methionine only, methionine plus vitamin B6, methionine plus vitamin B12, or methionine plus folic acid. Controls received no chemicals. Serum homocysteine levels were measured on treatment days 1 and 60. Orbital vessels were examined by CDU on day 60. Results: In the 4 study groups, homocysteine levels were significantly elevated on day 60 compared to the levels on day 1 (P < 0.05). Elevations of homocysteine levels in group 1 were greater than those of groups 2 and 4 on day 60 (P < 0.05). When results of ocular blood flow changes were compared, no statistically significant difference was found based on flow velocities in the ophthalmic artery. Measurements from the ciliary artery revealed a statistically significant decrease in flow velocity in the study groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Using CDU, we found that flow velocities in the ciliary artery were decreased. This condition is attributed to atherosclerotic and thromboembolic alterations of the ocular vessels due to hyperhomocysteinemia.

A Practical Calculation Method For Predetermination Of Amount And Duration Of Expander Application, Önder Tan Jan 2011

A Practical Calculation Method For Predetermination Of Amount And Duration Of Expander Application, Önder Tan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Expander application has become one of the methods most commonly used in reconstructive surgery by virtue of its many advantages. Determination of the amount and duration of expansion completely depends on a surgeon's experience and clinical estimation. Interestingly, no quantitative method has been described in the literature. In an attempt to address this issue, I developed a practical calculation method for expander cases. I use this technique daily during the expansion process to decide whether or not to complete the procedure. By means of this practical method, I believe that expanders can be optimally and more effectively utilized in reconstructive …
