An Ultrastructural Study Of Tubules, Vasculature And Interstitium In Human Renal Homografts, Marilyn Hatch Jan 1972

An Ultrastructural Study Of Tubules, Vasculature And Interstitium In Human Renal Homografts, Marilyn Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years renal homotransplantation has become more frequently used in the treatment of terminal renal disease in man. By carefully selecting donors with the aid of tissue compatibility tests and employing immunosuppressive drugs, these transplants have become increasingly more successful. It is true, however, that even with good tissue match-up and drug treatment rejection episodes occur, frequently within the first two-postsurgical weeks. The majority of these rejection crises may be reversed by increasing drug dosages and occasionally applying x-irradiation to the area of the transplant. In other cases rejection by the recipient is responsible for cessation of function of …

The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek Jan 1972

The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek

Theses and Dissertations

The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster. In the PET mouse, gerbil, kangaroo rat and Chinese hamster, the sac is contiguous with only small areas of pinealocytes. This sac never abuts true pineal parenchyma in the …

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage Jan 1971

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage

Theses and Dissertations

The problem to be investigated is: What are the emotional needs of patients, who are approaching death, as revealed by the patients themselves? The review of literature pointed out that almost all the data published about the dying patient were the thoughts of those around him rather than his own thoughts. Since the patient is our concern, it would seem logical to ask him what his needs are.

Nurses recognize as one of their responsibilities of assisting a patient toward a peaceful death when curative goals are beyond grasp. If the patient dies and his needs are not met, or …

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes Jan 1970

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:

1. The relative contributions of the variables …

Inhibition Of Cell Division, Protein Synthesis And Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Escherichia Coli W By Tetracycline Antibiotics, George Henry Miller Jan 1969

Inhibition Of Cell Division, Protein Synthesis And Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Escherichia Coli W By Tetracycline Antibiotics, George Henry Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Tetracyclines, originally isolated in the late 1940's and early 1950's from the mycelium of Streptomyces, have achieved major importance as therapeutic and prophylactic agents against a wide range of infections in human and veterinary medicine. They have also achieved great importance in agriculture where they are widely used to promote weight gain in livestock. Commercial production, during 1958 in the United States alone was 120 tons with a value of approximately $1 million per ton.

The clinical importance of these compounds has stimulated efforts to define their mode of action as inhibitors of bacterial reproduction. Antibiotics having as many functional …

Effects Of Winning And Losing On The Interaction Pattern Of Group Partners, Jarell F. Killian Jan 1968

Effects Of Winning And Losing On The Interaction Pattern Of Group Partners, Jarell F. Killian

Theses and Dissertations

Of special interest in the field of social psychology are the differences among groups in their functioning that distinguishes them from one another. Cartwright and Zander (1960) speak of this in pointing out that some groups work together with a great deal more success, satisfaction, and with a greater sense of togetherness than others. Some groups are racked with dissent, insouciance, and such a failure to meet goals and standards as to result in a slow death of inactivity. These differences persist even under basically identical circumstances. Concerning this point, Pepitone and Kleiner (1957, p. 192) state:

Everyday observations of …

A Study Of The Social And Economic Conditions Of A Sample Of The Blind Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, M. Lynn Cruser Jan 1963

A Study Of The Social And Economic Conditions Of A Sample Of The Blind Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, M. Lynn Cruser

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were (1) to learn how many persons who were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were blind, (2) to determine the social and economic conditions of these blind members, and (3) to learn what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has done to promote employment of blind members through its Welfare Program, and how this was accomplished.

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of The Divorce Process And Postdivorce Readjustment On The Lds Person, Everett Louis Hagerty Jan 1961

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of The Divorce Process And Postdivorce Readjustment On The Lds Person, Everett Louis Hagerty

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to gain an increased understanding of what the L.D.S. person feels during the process of divorce and postdivorce readjustment by (1) developing an interview guide to obtain the necessary data on divorce, (2) determining how strong the feelings of failure, guilt, and trauma were at different phases of the divorce process, (3) determining how the feelings of failure, guilt, and trauma were related to membership in the L.D.S. Church, its teachings, and contacts with Church authorities, and (4) gaining insights which might provide a basis for later investigation.
