In 1972, it was estimated that 1,036,560 individuals died of cardiovascular disease; 683,100 of these were attributable to acute myocardial infarction.² In addition, an estimated 28,420,000 Americans have some type of cardiovascular disease at a cost of $20 billion annually.³ The figures ”bring home" a stalking reality; cardiovascular disease is epidemic in this country, the incidence and ramifications of which make it an ever-present threat to all Americans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of parents' knowledge regarding asthma.

Twenty-five parents of children who have asthma were interviewed during their child's hospitalization for status asthmaticus. Adequate knowledge about environmental control and medication was noted in the majority of the subjects but over half were unable to explain the pathological changes which caused wheezeing. While most parents appear to have adequate knowledge of medications and environmental control on which to base their decisions about their child’s care there appears to be a need for more information regarding the pathophysiology.

Although the spermatozoon of the guinea pig is relatively large when compared with other mammalian spermatozoa, its small size has hidden many of the details of its structure from the light microscopist. It was not until the invention of the electron microscope that a thorough study of spermatozoon structure could be accomplished. Secondary polycythemia is defined as an absolute erythrocytosis caused by an enhanced stimulation of red blood cell production. One of the most common methods of monitoring the degree of polycythemia is the measurement of the hematocrit. The hematocrit is the measurement of the volume of red blood cells.expressed as a percentage of the volume of whole blood in a sample. This measurement is usually done using one of two methods: (1) the Coulter Model S® or (2) the centrifuged micro-hematocrit method. Thirty female outpatients with metastatic breast carcinoma were evaluated using two operational models constructed for the purpose of assessing and assigning a quantitative score for (A) extent of metastatic disease and (B) level of functional disability. These patients were drawn from the population of patients with disseminated breast carcinoma attending the medical oncology clinics at the Medical College of Virginia Tumor Clinics for a 49 day period in 1975. The data from this patient sample were used to test several hypotheses.

The purpose of this study was to develop a course outline to begin the teaching of the American Sign Language at the Language Training Mission in Provo, Utah. Presently there is no program offered to train missionaries to teach the eight discussions to the hearing impaired who use sign language and fingerspelling to communicate. This study attempts to provide such a course outline that can later be developed into a complete training program.

This thesis will describe and interpret the development of this Relief Society wheat storage program from its inception in 1876 to 1940 when the program was transferred to the General Church Welfare Committee. Emphasis will be placed on the sisters' attempts to store grain and the problems they encountered. The thesis will also discuss the effects of outside forces on the program and the different ways the sisters used the grain. The final chapter will deal with the relationship between the movement and the history of the Relief Society and its parent organization, the Mormon Church.

The present study investigated Maslow's assertion that individuals who were insecure and dominant would express their insecurity in a different manner than those individuals who were insecure and submissive. The amount of time spent on a puzzle solving task was used as an index of the expression of insecurity. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant interaction of security and dominance on the amount of time spent on the puzzle solving task, with the insecure-dominant group demonstrating more persistence than the insecure-submissive group at the task.

The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster.
