Overactive bladder (OAB) is a pervasive and debilitating condition for which effective therapeutic modalities are lacking. As potential novel pharmacological targets for lower urinary tract dysfunction, our recent studies have demonstrated voltage-gated KV7 channels (KV7.1-KV7.5) to be functionally expressed in detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) of the urinary bladder. Nonetheless, the specific roles of individual KV7 channel subtypes remains poorly understood. Using Western blot, immunocytochemistry, isometric DSM tension recordings, ratiometric fluorescence Ca2+ imaging, and patch-clamp electrophysiology, we demonstrated expression and key physiologic roles for the KV7.2/KV7.3 channels in guinea pig DSM using the novel and selective KV7.2/KV7.3 channel opener N-(2-Chloro-5-pyrimidinyl)-3,4-difluorobenzamide (ICA-069673). …

Pictorial health warning labels (HWLs) on cigarette packs are used worldwide to curb cigarette smoking, the leading preventable cause of death in the United States While individual-level mediators of HWLs’ effects on cessation have been thoroughly studied, interpersonal communication about HWLs has received less attention in HWL research. However, results from one study demonstrated the importance of interpersonal communication, finding that conversations about HWLs predicted quit attempts in Australia, Canada, and Mexico. That study also found that smokers in Mexico, where most smokers are Latino, reported more conversations than smokers in Australia and Canada, where most smokers are non-Latino White. …

Paclitaxel, vincristine, oxaliplatin, and bortezomib are cancer chemotherapy drugs with adverse effects that include chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) as well as depression of behavior and mood. In the clinical setting, opioids are often used concurrently with or following chemotherapy to treat pain related to the cancer or CINP, but repeated opioid exposure can also increase the risk of opioid abuse. This dissertation evaluated the effect of chemotherapy treatment on motivated behaviors and opioid reward in rats. Introduction—Bullying involvement is associated with many long-term adverse outcomes. Bullied children are at risk for internalizing disorders including anxiety, depression and suicidal behavior in childhood and adulthood. Bullies are also at risk for psychiatric disorders, specifically externalizing disorders. Bully victims—children who are both bullied and bullies—have a particularly poor prognosis, with a higher risk for internalizing and externalizing disorders. The purpose of this study is to study the epidemiology, risk of psychiatric disorders, and genetic and environmental influences of being bullied, a bully, and a bully victim—in the sample and individually in males and females.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is associated with health behaviors such as low rates of physical activity, overeating, alcohol use, and poor sleep; however, interventions targeting AS via exercise-based interoceptive exposure have not assessed these as outcomes. Modulation of mitochondrial complex I during reperfusion reduces cardiac injury. Complex I exists in two structural states: active (A) and deactive (D) with transition from A→D during ischemia. Reperfusion reactivates D→A with an increase in ROS production. Metformin preserves the D-Form. Our aim was to study the contribution of maintenance of deactivation of complex I during early reperfusion by metformin to protect against ischemia reperfusion injury. Our results showed that metformin decreased H9c2 cardiomyoblast apoptosis and total cell death following simulated ischemia for six hours followed by reoxygenation for twenty four hours compared to untreated cells. Bronchiolitis is prevalent among infants of 0 to 12 months, and usually caused by a variation of viruses. Signs and symptoms consist of coughing, rapid breathing, and an occasional fever in some infants. Bronchiolitis is not treated with antibiotics, but rather with proper medical examination and other procedures. Chest radiographs, steroids, and certain bronchodilators are considered ineffective treatments. The literature established that online instruction consists of cognitive, teaching, and social presence. Studies on the element of social presence linked text-based delivery of instruction with learners’ feelings of isolation and disengagement. This research findings prompted this facilitator creation of five-to-seven-minute companion videos that aligned and complemented weekly text-based learning modules to ascertain students’ perceptions of these videos as a medium for channeling social presence.
