The purpose of this study is to assess the psychomotor development in children with congenital heart disease, analyzes the degree of developmental delay and investigate the possible factors that result in psychomotor developmental delay in these cases. Form August 1986 to July 1987, 169 cases with congenital heart disease and 92 normal children as control group were studied. The Kansas Development Screening Chart, which was designed by Dr. Holmes, was used to assess the psychomotor development in these 261 children. The thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a entrapment syndrome of the neurovascular bundle supplying the upper extremity. There are many disorders have been associated with TOS. We can divide TOS into vascular types and neurogenic types according to it's component parts.the classic type of neurogenic TOS is uncommon. This case has abduction contracture of left shoulder. The electrodiagnostic findings showed typical of neurogenic TOS. Conservative treatment programs were given and the symptoms were subsided after one week.

Pneumatic pylon is used for the lower extremity amputees to allow early ambulation and to reduce stump edema postoperatively. The results of pneumatic pylon was studied in 10 patients who received lower extremity amputation form May 1987 to October 1987 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.Among them, two cases received above-knee amputation and eight cases received below-knee amputation. No stump pain and skin break-down was noted in all cases studied. Phantom sensation was improved in eight patients. Nine patientshowed complete confidence in the future fitting of permanent prosthesis. They needed shorter training time using permanent prosthesis. Wound infection is high in …

The functional outcome of 34 cases of digital ampution with toe-to-digit reconstruction in Chang-Gung Memorial hospital, from Jan 1984 to Jan 1987, were evaluated by questionaires.The age of the patients were from 16 to 48 years old, with male in majority (82.3%). Nearly all of them were occupational injury. There were 20 cases with right hand injury, most of them should change hand dominance even after reconstruction surgery (63.2%). This study was carried out on 67 children with obstetric palsy in the Department of physical Medicine and Rehabilition of the National Taiwan. University. It revealed that birth weight of more than 3500 gm would have higher prevalence of the palsy. There was no significant evidence to support the palsy had any relationship to patient's sex, presentation, parity, mode of delivery and lateralization of the lesion.The follow up intervals ranged from 3 months to 6 years, with the mean 2 years and 3 months. Long term hemodialysis of uremic patients can keep on their living, but they still have many problems like severe anemia, atherosclerosis, and decreasing physical fitness, etc.In this report, a symptomatic maximum bicycle execise test was given to 19 male and 11 female unremic patients who were in stable condition. This test was administered some 18-36 hours after hemodialysis. The patients experienced a progressive increase of resistance on the bicycle until the patient couldn't tolerate it. Six hundred cases of poliomyelitis during the last burst out episode in Taiwan of 1982 were analysed. The age distributions of them were very young in majority, 267 cases were below 1 year old (44.5%), 108cases were 1 year old (18.0%), 67 cases were 2 years old (11.2%).Among them, 253 cases were never received any polio vaccination (42.2%), 186 cases only received vaccination for one time (31.0%), 72 cases received twice (12.0%), 52 cases received 3 times (8.7%), only 20 cases accept complete 4 times vaccination (3.3%). Patients with incomplete spinal cord injury admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from July 1982 to December 1985 were analysed. Totally , 68 male and 9female patients could be followed up by questionaires. The average age of the was 39.6±9.5years. Among them, 34 cases (44.2%)received primary school education. Traffic accident was the leading cause of injury (37.3%), and falling from height was the second major cause(27.3%). The severity of injury was denoted by Yale Score. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the acromicolavicular joint factor eliciting the shoulder pain and limitation of movement. We collected 30cases with suspected the A-C joint lesion disclosed by physical examination from O.P.D of the Rehabilation Dept. V.G.H.-T.C sine Sept. '86 to March. '87. The physical findings were (1) local tenderness at the A-C joint area, (2) painful arc at 150 to 180 degree, (3) limited R. O.M. during horizontal adduction and elicited pain at the end range. Dancing population has been increaseing in Taiwan for the past 15years, but report of studing dance injuries are still few. Eighty-one theatrical dancing students (Male 18, Female 63 ) at National Institute of the Arts and Chinese Culture university were diagnosed and followed in our OPD to study the patterns, severity & mechanisms of dance injuries. A total of 260injuries in the students were reported. We found that the major injury sites by rate were back: 23.46%;ankle: 22.3%;knee: 21.45%; foot:9.23%; hip & thight: 9.6%; other site including: leg, shoulder, elbow, wrist were 14.2%. Thirty hemiplegics and 15normal persons were enrolled in this study. Measuring the recovery time of H reflex by dual stimulation technique to tibial nerve was performed to evaluate the excitability of spinal motoneurons. It was found that the recovery time of H reflex in normal persons and nonhemiplegic sides of hemiplegics was 57.0±27.3 msec and 57.3±21.4 msec respectively. The recovery time of hemiplegic sides was 37.5±12.8 msec and it was very significantly shorter than the normal ones. The shortening of the recovery time showed good correlation with the neurological recovery as well as the spasticity of the patients. These findings …

Content Subscales C1 to C5 and C9 to C11 the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery were revised to make a Chinese version. It was administered to 48 brain-damaged patients of a rehabilitation center. Upon Cheching the difficulty levels of test items and the relative coefficients between items and subscales, we corrected 10 unsuitable items and dropped one. This second revision has 200items and 21 Factor Subscales. Mean scores and SD's of the brain-damaged group for every item and every subscale are presented. Finally, some suggestions for future study and application are made.

According to the questionnaries from 72 subjects of fiddle players, of whom 13 examined, the total rate of musculo-skeletal involvement was 80.6%. There was no obvious different rates between total subjects (including person who played piano or other instruments as a chief one) and the subjects who played violin or viola as a chief instrument.The symptoms occurred most frequently on left side. The ratio between left and right side was 1.9: 1.The most frequently involved muscles were trapezius, levator scapulae and serratus posterior superior. This was closely related to the posture of playing.

12chinical assessments and 4 laboratory tests of disease activity, including a newly designed dolorimeter, have been compared in a group of 42 patients with rheumatoid arthritis seen in 2 disease active and stable stages within 6 months. Number of painful joints, dolorimetry, distance of fingertip-to-distal palmar crease, functional score, C-reactive protein, and grasp strength correlate best with other assessments and tests, and are therefore to be the best clinical indices of disease activity.

A positive unilateral straight-leg-raising sign is routinely interpreted as indicative of a disc lesion. A review of the literature was undertaken in an attempt to more clearly illustrate the mechanisms and results of the straight-leg-raising test. It was found that a positive straight-leg-raising test has minimal value in differentiating a patient with herniated disc from other patients with low back pain and sciatica.

A syntax stimulation program, based upon the syntactic hierarchy of difficulty, was used to treat a thirty year old brain injury patient with severe agrammatism. This program is designed to elicit the basic Mandarin sentence constructions using a story completion technique. With 80 sessions of treatment, the patient's spontaneous speech and picture description showed increased phrase length, use of grammatical onstructions and communication skills. From the preliminary study, this program appears to have therapeutic merit in training syntactic skills of agrammatic Chinese patients.

The somatosensory evoked potentials following tibial nerve stimulation were recorded in 18 patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injuries at 3 to 5 weeks. The results were correlated with the patient's neurological recovery.One cervical case had absent transmission in unilateral cortical SEP but still with good neurological recovery later on, one lumbar case had no recorded SEP either at L2 or cortical level got complete recovery within 3 months. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the reference electrode to the motor unit action potential parameters including amplitude, duration, surface area, phases and turns by reading the same recording area by monopolar and cocentric needles. A concentric needle was stuck into the subject's anterior tibialis muscle, online motor unit analysis was done by EMG-computer combinations. Crossed aphasia is defined as the combination of left hcmiplegia (-paresis) and aphasia in a right-handed patient. The incidence of such cases is very low, reported as 0.4%-3.75% in all aphasics. Early detection of patients or carrier of Duchenne muscular dystrophy with elevated CK is well documented in the literature. The purpose of this study is to find out normal CK value of cord blood during paripurm, in order to provide a diagnostic reference of DMD. Totally 327 newborn infants were evaluated for the cord blood CK value during paripurm. It revealed the mean CK value was 117.９±61.1IU／(ranged from 31.4to 455IU/1)the mean cord blood CK value of the male newborn was 125.1±69.8IU/1 and that of the female was 110.9±52.9IU/1.
