In 30 hemiplegic patients due to cerebrovascular accident, surface, motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV), distal latency and amplitude of median and ulnar nerves were determined. After computer analysis, the data revealed that the surface temperatures of the affected side are lower than those of the unaffected side (32.2 ±0.6℃ ,33.8 ±0.9℃,P＜ 0.05), the MNCV is significantly lower in the affected side than in the unaffected side (Median:53.3±5.4m/sec,55.16.1 m/sec, P＜ 0.038.Ulnar:53.7±4.9 m/sec.56.65.6 m/sec, P＜ 0.007),both motor and sensory amplitudes of median and ulnar nerves are lower in the affected side than in the unaffected side but no significant difference in sensory …

The clinical features of sexual activity of stroke patients were studies and reported in 55patients(38 males.17 females) through interview at out-patient service/The mean age of all patients was 58.6± 9.6 years. Duration after stroke ranged from 6 months to 11 years. Among them,35 patients(63.6%) reported no sexual activity while20 patients (36.4%) still had sexual activity. In the sexually inactive group (24 males, 11 females), the mean age was 61.4 ± 7.2 years. Direct nerve root stimulation was compared with needle electromyography (EMG) in 40 patients suspected with L5 or S1 radiculopathy. Monopolar needle inserted into deep paraspinal muscles was used for the nerve root stimulation. The minimal latency, amplitude and area of negative phase of compound muscle action potential from myotomal muscles were recorded with an assistance of a computer program. Significant abnormality was considered in patients more than 2SD from control mean values. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of intervertebral separation under different cervical traction angles. 17 healthy young adults of under 30, 7 male and 10 females, were tested. All of them denied neck trauma or pain history. In this study, we used Digit-Trac E 60 KS cervical traction machine. Intermittent cervical traction supine position, with 30 pound traction force under 0∘, flexion 30∘and 15∘between head and trunk. Swimming is one of the best' exercises for poliomyelitis patients. 31 members-in YMCA swimming training program participated in this study. We used the paired-t test to analize the changes of cardiopulmonary function changes.After 3 months training course, there was increase in pulse rate, systolic blood pressure and rate-pressure product at arm-crank rate of both 60rpm and 90rpm. The maximal insipiratory pressure (Pi max) and maximal expiratory pressure (Pi max) were significantly increased. In order to achieve good results following primary flexor tendon repair, detailed attention to post-operative rehabilitation program is essential. From February 1986 to July 1988,fifty-nine digits of thirty-one cases received primary flexor tendon repair. Among them, 25 were men, 6 were women. Ages were from 3 to 54 years old. There were 14 digits injuried at zone 2 (group A) and 45 digits injuried at zone 1, 3, 4 and 5 (gronp B). The results were evaluated by Buck-Gramacko method. 511 patients who were admitted to NTUH between January 1981 and June 1988 with nonprogressive cerebral infarction were studied retrospectively. They had a known time of onset, the type of activity performed, the age group, sex and anatomical location from the computed tomography.302(59.ll%)patients suffesed cesebral infarction between 6 am and 6 pm.Only 209(40.89%) patients had their infarct between 6 pm and 6 am. CVA patients with traumatic bone fracture admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from September 1982 to September 1988 were analysed. There were 45 patients. Among them, 29 cases were female (64.4%), 16 cases were male (35.6%). The age ranged from 49 to 90 year old. The age distributions of them were old in majority, 31 cases were over 65 year old (68.8%). Fracture happened after stroke for 2 months to 20 years. Baclofen,a derivative of gamma-aminobutyric acid, was introduced in 1966 as a possible treatment for spasticity due to cortico-spinal tract lesions. The previous reports suggested that it may be more effective than other spasmolytic agents, currently available. This report presents our experience with baclofen in the management of spasticity in 45 hospitalized patients of department of rehabilitation in NTUH. Twenty low back pain patients and sixteen not suffering from low back pain were taken several flexility and asymmetry tests by two different examiners. Several possible quasi-objective measures of low back pain were investigateed, eleven subjective reported relief of pain immediately following rotational manipulations of lumbar spine as described by Cyriax.The objective tests of pre-and post-manipulation were analyzied, hamstring tightness test was not particular high due to the sensivity of different examiner, but active or passive straight leg raising can be strongly recommended for assement of spinal manipulation.

Twenty five comminuted unstable fractures of femur or tibia were treated with the Grosse-Kempf interlocking nail. The biomechanical properties of interlicking nail are quiet different from the intramedullary nail The osteosynthesis material assumes the full load in static interlicking nail, though in Kuntscher nail, the osseous cylinder itself can vear the weight. Partial weight-bearing is permitted in early stage. Full weight-bearing is allowed after the dynamization while the bridging callus are formed. A total of 118 undergraduate medical students were evaluated from July 1987 to June 1988. They were divided into three groups, Group A:84 sixth year students who enrolled the training program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Group B:22 seventh year students who elected the training program and Group C:12 seventh year students who did not elect the program. Students were evaluated, by written examination, before and after the course completion. Growth factor was reported to be effective in promoting wound healing, possibly through the mechanisms of stimulating DNA synthesis, chemotaxis of fibroblasts, embryogenesis, angiogenesis and enhancement of epithelialization. Therapeutic injection of facet joints is now widely practised, but Chinese experience has been infrequently reported. 21patients with suffering from the ”facet syndrome” have been taken from OPD patients, Our series including total 30 intra-articular injections C 2% Xylocaine & Kenacort A preparation provide a diagnostic-therapeutic block; Certainty of joint penetration can be ensured only by the routine use of joint arthrography ￠ Metrazamide. Results indicate that immediate effective is 61.9% for releiving pain. It means this block is a good diagnostic-therapeutic procedure in low back pain patients.

The prosthetic workshop of National Taiwan University Hospital was established in 1970. There were 665 amputees recieved prosthetic fitting at the workshop from the beginning of 1971 to the end of 1985. Among these amputees, 307 patients were the victims of black-foot-disease, and has ben reported previously. Therefore, the present study included the rest of 358 amputees, 278 males and 80 females with male/female ratio 3.5: 1. Hearniation of lumbar disc (HIVD) causing compression of the cauda equina is rare but needs urgent diagnosis and surgical treatment. Cauda equina syndrome (CES) has been described as a complex of low back pain, bilateral or unilateral sciatica, saddle anesthesia and motor weakness in the lower extremities that may progress to paraplegia with bowel and urinary bladder incontinence. From January, 1986 through April, 1998, a total 42 patients with chronic intractable pain, age between 25 and 60 years, were treated by non-biofeed back relaxation technique including progressive relaxation, autogenic phrase, Benson's meditation and visual imagery. All patients had ever received medical, surgical and physical treatments but in vein at all.Twenty-eight of 42 patients (66.6%)reported getting apparent to slight improvement after relaxation training. Patients in non-specific pain syndrome group had a higher successful result than those in failed back surgery syndrome, cervical syndrome, and low back syndrome groups. Summary In order to establish normal data of the isokinetic (IK) and isometric (IM) contraction of the quadriceps (Q) and hamstring (H) muscles, 22 normal young men and 24 normal young women were tested with a Cybex II Isokinetic Dynamometer at the speed of 0,5,10,20,and 30 rpm (0 rpm= isometric contraction). The IM contraction was tested at 45, 60, and 90 degrees of knee flexion in the Q muscles, and at 30, 45, and 60 degrees in the H muscles. Nineteen cases of paraplegia due to decompression sickness were experienced from May 1983 to August 1985. All were the male fishermen. Their ages ranged from twenty-three yeras to fifty yeras.There were five with complete thoracic cord injury, seven with imcomplete thoracic cord injury and one with complete lumber cord injury, six with imcomplete lumber cord injury. All the patients had received hyperbaric treatment and rehabilitation. There were six persons with severe spasticity during discharge. Others had the symptom of mild incontinence.
