Resistance to insulin therapy is primarily due to emotional and intellectual perceptions among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) new to insulin therapy. Providers’ effective approach to diabetes education equips patients with knowledge, which can reduce resistance to insulin therapy. This project included patients with T2D between the ages of 18 to 70 whose glycated hemoglobin (HgbA1c) was ≥ 8.5% taking two or more oral antidiabetic agents and not on insulin therapy. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics are environmental pollutants associated with various diseases including toxicant associated fatty liver disease (TAFLD). Previously, exposure to Aroclor 1260 (a PCB mixture) has been shown to exacerbate TAFLD, partly through Aroclor 1260 induced gut dysbiosis. Studies has also demonstrated that PS exposure alters gut microbiome composition and induced obesity. This dissertation presents a series of studies examining mechanisms of deglutition and respiration, and how these vital processes are impacted by opioids. The experiments in Chapter Two investigated the role of the upper esophagus in airway protection through systematic activation of pharyngeal and esophageal mechanoreceptors in a cat electromyography model. Chapter Three compared effects of opioid administration on breathing and swallowing between male and female rats, and found that females are more susceptible to opioid-induced depression of breathing and swallow than males. The limited regenerative capacity of adult cardiomyocytes (CMs) is manifested in prevalent morbidity and mortality associated with ischemic heart disease. We previously demonstrated that a combination of four cell cycle factors (4F) promotes efficient cell division in differentiated CMs. The temporal transcriptional reprogramming in the 4F-transduced CMs indicates that epigenetic modifications mediate the cell cycle progression. Counties in states bordering northeast Tennessee harbor tick species associated with human illness. Human diseases transmitted by ticks include ehrlichiosis, spotted fever rickettsial group diseases, tularemia, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, Heartland virus, Powassan virus, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). These diseases cause morbidity and mortality in human populations and may pose a high risk to individuals, wildlife, and livestock.
