Dr. Snook And The Coed: The Theora Hix Affair And Murder, James R. Hennessy

Dr. James Howard Snook was born in South Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County in 1879. He was both an alumnus and later a faculty member of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1922 Dr. Snook married Helen Marple and had a daughter. In 1926 Dr. Snook began an affair with an OSU medical student, Theora Hix. The affair lasted about 2 years. During a visit in 1929 Theora Hix allegedly threatened to harm Dr. Snook's wife and child. Dr. Snook murdered her and was sentenced to death in February of 1930.

The murder trials of Harry Thaw, in 1907 and 1908, and dentist Dr. Arthur Waite, in 1916, were “celebrity trials” that received widespread newspaper coverage. As such, they brought psychiatry and psychiatric diagnosis into the public’s awareness.

The concept of caring has been identified with nursing since its professional organization. Several theories of caring have been developed and some adopted for instruction and implementation in nursing programs. This study’s aim was to identify caring attributes exhibited in a group of sophomore nursing students who had their maternity experience in a women’s prison. A focus group of six students responded in a semi-structured interview about their experiences with pregnant prisoners. The interview was recorded, transcribed and analyzed for Roach’s five caring concepts. The qualitative analysis revealed that sophomore nursing students manifested the caring concepts in their experience with …

Ion transporters are the molecular basis for ion homeostasis of the cell and the whole organism. The anion exchanger pendrin is only one of a number of examples where a complete or partial loss of function and/or deregulation of expression of ion transporters may lead or contribute to pathological conditions in humans. A complete understanding of the function of ion transporters in health and disease may pave the way for the identification of new and focused therapeutic approaches. Objective: Do pre-injury and early hospital admission characteristics help predict patient discharge disposition? Background: Total one-year treatment cost of adult major trauma in the United States is estimated at $30 billion annually, with 58% of the cost due to the index hospitalization. Increased length of stay (LOS) increases morbidity and delays rehabilitation. Prediction of discharge to a location other than home through univariate risk factor methodology and development of a multivariable binary logistic regression model allows early discharge planning. Methods: A one-year Level 1 trauma center registry dataset was used to develop a predictive model of discharge disposition using 2836 …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether day of the week, season, federal holidays, and severe weather conditions affected emergency department (ED) volume in Montgomery County, Ohio. A retrospective analysis of ED visits from July 1, 2010 to July 1, 2011 was conducted. Meteorological data in Montgomery County was obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A two tailed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if the total number of ED visits were significantly associated with these variables. The average number of ED visits per day was 722.5. Background: Cholera outbreaks result in significant morbidity worldwide. Transmission of the disease may be influenced by weather fluctuations, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and excessive rainfall, and socioeconomic status (SES), including income and education. El Niño events may influence many aspects of the climate, including the amount of rainfall occurring in a given year and surface water temperature. This study aimed to assess the influences of extreme weather and SES factors on cholera incidence in India during the seventh cholera pandemic (1961-2008).

Because the general public is beginning to encounter molecular genetics during the course of their everyday lives with things like genetic screening, genetically modified food, and stem cell research, among others; scientific literacy in molecular genetics is becoming increasingly important in society today. Two learning progressions have recently been published by Roseman, Caldwell, Gogos & Kurth (2006) and Duncan, Rogat & Yarden (2009). Our study aims to test the upper bounds of the Duncan et al. Since the 1950s the number of major disaster declarations has more than tripled. These disasters cause an increase in the number of sick and injured individuals. In order to handle this increased patient load, health professionals must be brought in from outside the area, often from surrounding states. Current health professional licensing is maintained by each state individually, with post-disaster assistance made available through the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA), the Model State Emergency Health powers Act, the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the National Disaster Medical System. Reproductive isolation is the basis of the Biological Species Definition and can be a driving force of speciation. Theoretical studies have provided models of how reproductive isolation can arise within individual species. Genetic tests of these models are limited to populations in which reproductive isolation is present but not complete. Here, reproductive isolation in the Elgans-Group of the nematode genus Caenorhabditis is reviewed. Pre-mating barriers, assortative fertilization and post-zygotic barriers all have been observed in this clade. In some combinations of species, fertile F1 hybrids can be obtained. The population requiring hemodialysis (HD) in the United States continues to grow, with recent studies reporting over 370,000 Americans with end stage renal disease (ESRD) who are HD-dependent. The creation of functional HD access is often the limiting step in utilization of renal replacement therapy (RRT). Since the 1960s, the creation of hemodialysis access has become one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States with over 500,000 vascular access procedures performed per year. We report on a cross-domain, artifact-based, work analysis of air traffic management that employed a hierarchical modeling methodology centered on the artifacts used in the operational setting and the information and decision-making support they provided. Effective intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) relies heavily on both technological and human analytical capabilities. Intelligence analysts must be able to detect, interpret, process, and perform other critical tasks to turn data into meaningful information for decision-makers. The ability to aggregate massive data sets into operationally relevant information is challenging due to issues such as information overload, team coordination, time constraints, tunnel vision, and limited or vague guidance. This report describes research and development efforts to enhance training for geospatial intelligence analysts. Initial results from cognitive task analyses with these analysts along with associated technology development are discussed.

A preliminary examination of the effectiveness of a simulator-based training program for pilots was conducted. Thirteen students of varying backgrounds, with limited flight experience enrolled in an intensive, simulator-based flight training program. Six students completed their FAA Private Pilot certificates in an average of five weeks, while five completed within four weeks. They completed instrument ratings within three or four weeks. These qualifications were completed with fewer flight hours than the US average. One student stopped training, but four remaining students have completed their FAA commercial, multi-engine and instructor qualifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is an ambitious collaborative effort between government agencies and industry to increase the capabilities of the current air traffic system. Under NextGen, tools are being developed to support air traffic controllers in many aspects of their jobs. However, budgetary constraints, unanticipated technological hurdles and other challenges to implementation make it unlikely that every NextGen tool in development will find its way into future air traffic control facilities. Four-dimensional trajectory-based operations (4D TBO) requiring aircraft to meet specified timing constraints at designated waypoints along their route are a key strategy for increasing airspace throughput and efficiency. The Required Time of Arrival (RTA) function of the aircraft Flight Management System (FMS) and the ground-based Traffic Management Advisor (TMA) were tested for supporting such operations. Two different methods for implementing appropriate time intervals between sequential RTA aircraft were explored in this paper: a fixed 90-second interval versus discrete intervals varied to match the prevailing conditions. The goals of human factors practitioners and industrial psychologists in situation awareness milieu are to assess individuals, teams, and organizations to measure current performance and predict future performance. The value in assessing situation awareness (SA) is that it impacts performance.
