Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: In view of the pathophysiology of chronic radiation cystitis (CRC) that is mainly caused by activation of an inflammatory cascade leading to chronic inflammation, vascular damage and fibrosis, amniotic membrane (AM) based therapy has emerged as a potential therapeutic approach for radiation-induced tissue injury due to its immunomodulatory, vasculogenic and anti-fibrotic properties. We have previously reported that amniotic bladder therapy (ABT) provides symptomatic improvement in refractory CRC patients for up to 3 months. Herein, we evaluated the durability of ABT up to 6 months.

Methods: CRC patients recalcitrant to multiple therapies were eligible for the study and …

Osteocytes serve as a sensory network that responds to dynamic loading of the skeleton and play a crucial role in regulating bone mass while maintaining bone quality [1]. Osteocytes’ induction of bone formation in response to loading is extremely age dependent, such that clinical studies have shown exercise to be less and less effective as we age [2,3]. As a result, modifying osteocytes’ mechanosensitivity may enable older adults to better capitalize on the anabolic nature of exercise to increase bone mass and reduce fracture risk. Based on our previous work, P2Y2 activation down-regulates the mechanosensitivity of bone cells by increasing …

Insular and Amygdala Origin Seizures: Unmasked with Electrocorticography (ECOG)

Introduction:

Insula and amygdala have a large network of connections to other cortical regions. Seizures originating from these structures may become evident only after propagation to other structures. High degree of attention must be paid to auras and seizure semiology in patients with medically intractable epilepsy.

Methodology:

We have described a series of three adult male patients with focal intractable epilepsy who did not have structural lesions on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Patients underwent MRI, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan, scalp electroencephalography (EEG), and stereo EEG implantation.

Results:

All three patients …

Enhancing Patient Understanding: The Impact Of Educational Videos On Ophthalmology Visits, Anna Zhao

Medical Student Research Symposium

A major component of effective patient-centered care is the patient’s understanding of their health condition and treatments. Increased knowledge of medical conditions can positively modify health behaviors, such as more participation in cancer screening and better adherence to medications. However, the readability of educational materials often does not match the patients’ reading abilities. Instead, educational videos, which have gained prominence with the emergence of tele-visits following COVID-19, have shown promise in being beneficial to patients with lower literacy levels. For ocular pathologies, early identification and care are key in preventing vision loss. Tele-education in ophthalmology could increase patient awareness of …

Role Of Intraflagellar Transport Protein Ift20 In The Formation And Function Of Motile Cilia In Mammals, Mohammad Z. Abdulghani, Wei Li, Tao Li, Michael J. Holtzman, Gregory J. Pazour, Zhibing Zhang

Medical Student Research Symposium

Cilia are microtubular structures present on most mammalian cells, which can be categorized into motile cilia and primary cilia (non-motile cilia). The axoneme of both cilia types possess intraflagellar transport (IFT) machinery, composed of unique protein complexes that travel in opposite directions along the microtubules. Although the role of IFT in primary cilia formation has been well studied, little is known about its role in mammalian motile cilia assembly. IFT20 is a component of IFT-B complex. We generated conditional Ift20 knockout mice by crossing floxed Ift20 mice with the Foxj1-Cre transgenic mouse line to specifically delete Ift20 from motile cilia. …
