In summary, orthopedic surgery has much to offer the rheumatoid patient, particularly if the proper patient is chosen at the proper time. The advent of the total joint replacements, now in its infancy, gives renewed hope for the salvage of many derelicts and for the prevention of the severe disabilities and deformities which were all too frequent in the past.

Patients who have sustained a spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage are victims of a very serious illness. Not only are they subject at all times to the potentially catastrophic results of a recurrent bleed, but they are faced with the manifestations of the irritative effects of blood in the subarachnoid space where the blood may function as a poison to the vessel wall. These acutely ill individuals may suffer a composite of secondary effects from a bleed which may include a communicating hydrocephalus, cerebral edema (ischemic or chemically induced), sterile meningitis, inappropriate ADH syndrome (osmotic effects of blood in the cerebrospinal fluid), …

In describing what is new in the management of malignant brain tumors, I shall confine myself largely to chemotherapy and shall outline what we think is important based on our own experience, what we have achieved with single and multiple agents, and where we are going. We have just reviewed our five-year experience and find that chemotherapy, perhaps, is the only thing that is new.

Rheumatoid factors are present in a variety of disease states and in normal persons, usually in low titer. High titers of rheumatoid factors are almost exclusively associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Still's Disease In Adults, William M. Edwards, Stephen R. Koller, Michael J. Miller

In 1897, Dr. George F. Still described 22 children with a form of chronic joint disease which differed from rheumatic fever. Twelve of these children had a syndrome characterized by glandular and splenic enlargement which, with a characteristic fever pattern, rash, and arthritis, has become known as Still's disease. Subsequent investigators have described patients over age 16 presenting with similar signs and symptoms suggesting that this syndrome is not specific for children. We recently studied a patient in whom the diagnosis of adult onset Still's disease was made.

Today, 1974, in large medical centers, evaluation of the patient in coma is almost a daily necessity, and the need to evaluate the patient in deep coma arises once or twice every week. Even in smaller hospitals the problem is not uncommon. This has come about because many laymen and most medical personnel are now well trained in methods of cardiorespiratory resuscitation. Persons are not allowed to die easily and once resuscitated, are moved to intensive care units where life is maintained. Fortunately, if they do not die of their underlying disease, such as trauma or myocardial infarction, many patients …

Neuro-Ophthalmology In Severe Head Injury, John W. Harbison

If asked what the significance of neuro-ophthalmology is in the evaluation of severe head injury, many medical and surgical practitioners of neurology would promptly reply that it consists of monitoring pupillary reactivity in anticipation of the uncal herniation syndrome. A discussion of two broad premises of a factual nature, however, should easily convince these same practitioners that the neuro-ophthalmic evaluation of patients with severe head injuries offers far more than the Hutchinson pupil.

The Effect Of Security And Dominance On Task Perseverance, Gary M. Katz

The present study investigated Maslow's assertion that individuals who were insecure and dominant would express their insecurity in a different manner than those individuals who were insecure and submissive. The amount of time spent on a puzzle solving task was used as an index of the expression of insecurity. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant interaction of security and dominance on the amount of time spent on the puzzle solving task, with the insecure-dominant group demonstrating more persistence than the insecure-submissive group at the task.

The function of the central nervous system cannot be understood from inspection of a single region, for each cell and fiber has discrete connections. Therefore, a study of the nervous system requires distinct approaches. One fundamental approach has been the study of comparative neuroanatomy.

In a comparative study of the evolution of the primates and subsequently man, the investigator is confronted with a variety of animal forms. Each form represents an end product of a long vertical line of evolutionary development. The problem is to try to reconstruct the vertical line (ancestral forms) from the horizontal end products (extant forms). …

An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.
