Identification of 78 Candida isolates was carried out by a commercial Fungichrom test kit, the reliability of which was further confirmed by conventional biochemical tests and the API 20C kit. Differentiation between different Candida species was also observed when sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of whole cell proteins was used. The most frequently isolated species of yeast from vaginal swabs obtained from patients was Candida albicans, which accounted for 39 of 78 (50.00%) of the isolates from women in Ankara. MUC2 is a well-identified intestinal mucin, present predominantly in the small intestine and colon. It is known that pathological alterations in the expression and composition of this mucin occur in several serious diseases related to epithelial surfaces, e.g., carcinoma and colitis ulcerosa. This study was designed in order to evaluate the relationship of MRSA isolates obtained from an intensive care unit (ICU) and other wards as well as the epidemiological features and typing methods. Two polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic methods of typing MRSA isolates-sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE) and native-PAGE (N-PAGE) were evaluated and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns were determined. MRSA isolates were investigated according to the whole cell proteins (WCPs) and filtrate proteins (FPs). The success rate of a repaired torn meniscus is not more than 70%. Gene transfer to healing soft tissues appears to be a feasible method for manipulating the healing process. In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of gene transfer to meniscal tissue we tried to transfer a reporter gene ( Echerichia coli, b-galactosidase gene) by using HVJ-liposome mediated gene transfer. In this study, the results of anti- ovalbumin (OVA) monoclonal antibody production and characterization are reported. Splenocytes from OVA-hyperimmune Balb/C mouse were fused with F0 myeloma cells and resulting hybridoma cells were selected in hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thymidine containing medium. A total of 37 HAT resistant hybridomas were obtained. Upon testing the hybridoma supernatants in OVA and mouse immunoglobulin G specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we observed that two of the hybridomas secreted OVA specific antibodies. In this experimental study, we investigated whether vitamin E and EGb 761 have any influence on endotoxemic rats and liver histopathology. Forty rats were divided into four groups of 10 animals in each group. The control rats were untreated and comprised group 1. The evoked potential components in a time window of 10-50 ms following an acoustic stimulus are called middle latency responses (MLRs). It is known that an amplitude enlargement occurs in guinea pig MLRs to monaural clicks when continuous white noise is applied to the other ear. This study was conducted to examine the development, progression and reversibility of cartilage lesions in juvenile rats that had been given ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone. Four-week-old rats were treated with an oral dose of 900 mg/kg/day of ofloxacin for 7 days. The present experimental study was carried out on rats subjected to ischemia and reperfusion. The effects of allopurinol on mucus, an important component of the stomach mucosal barrier, were investigated. Twenty-one Swiss Albino rats, each weighing 200-250 g, were used. On the control group, no treatment was performed, while the sham operation group was subjected to 30 minutes of ischemia and 20 minutes of reperfusion. The protective roles of low-dose dopamine and mannitol infusion in the renal function of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery were compared in 36 patients by measuring urine N-acetyl-\beta-D- glucosaminidase activity, serum and urinary creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and urine output. The patients were randomly selected and received a continuous infusion of dopamine, 3 µg/kg/min (Group I), mannitol, 1 mg/kg/h (Group II), no medication (Group III) before the induction of anaesthesia. The roles of terminal carbohydrate moieties of serum glycoproteins in their recognition and uptake by receptors and in their rapid removal from the circulation are well established. However, little is known about the detailed structure of the terminal glycan chains in apolipoproteins and their compatibility with the known ligand specificity of carbohydrate recognition systems. The carbohydrate moieties of apolipoproteins in human serum chylomicrons and VLDL were examined. This study was performed to compare the effects of 4 different hormone replacement therapy (HRT) protocols on certain cardiovascular risk factors. Eighty- nine postmenopausal women were treated with oral conjugated estrogens, transdermal 17 beta-E2, cyclic oral E2-17- valerate+cyproterone acetate (E2-17-V+CA) or tibolone. Blood pressure (BP) measurements, fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and triglyceride levels at the 12th month were compared with the pretreatment values in each treatment group. Objective: We examined the reliability of end-tidal CO_2 (ETCO_2 ) level in predicting mortality after endotracheal intubation in emergency situations. Methods: In this prospective study, the reliability of ETCO_2 monitoring in the emergency setting as a useful predictor of outcome was investigated in 36 adult patients with pending cardiopulmonary collapse. The cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure was performed as usual and the cardiac rhythm, arterial O_2 saturation, non- invasive blood pressure and ETCO_2 levels were continuously monitored in all the patients. Hearing screening of neonates is the key to preventing the most severe consequences of congenital hearing loss. In this paper, the auditory brain stem responses (ABR) of neonates at high risk for hearing impairment at Marmara University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are reported. One hundred fifty-four high-risk neonates underwent screening by ABR carried out according to the US Joint Committee on Hearing 1994 Position Statement. In this study, the uses of topical clindamycin phosphate and azelaic acid were compared from point of clinical efficacy and emergence of resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Each group contained 20 patients. Pre- and post-treatment acne grades and comparison of two groups were evaluated by using the Wilcoxon and Spearman statistical techniques. The sensitivity of CNS to azelaic acid and to clindamycin phosphate were searched by microbroth dilution technique. Azelaic acid was found more effective in reducing acne grade. Rationale: In this study the efficacy of Lamotrigine was evaluated in children with medically intractable epilepsy. Methods: 22 epileptic children, ranging between 4.2 years and 15 years of age (mean 9.3 years) were included in this study. Twelve (54.5%) were male and 10 (45.5%) were female. This study was carried out in order to determine the effects of levonorgestrel (LNG) and progestin derivatives, alone and in combination with melatonin (MEL), on the plasma oxidant-antioxidant system, and also lipid and lipoprotein levels, in the rat model. Female rats were divided into 4 groups according to subcutaneous treatment with LNG (5 mg/kg/day), MEL (25 mg/kg/day) and a LNG-MEL combination (5 mg LNG/25 mg MEL/kg/day) for 5 consecutive days, and a control group. Control radiation dose-response curves are necessary in evaluating the absorbed radiation dose of similar radiation quality following radiation accidents or in monitoring the health of both the public and radiation workers. Each biological dosimetry laboratory should establish its own control dose-response data. In this study our aim was to establish control curves for 200 kVp X-rays in our laboratory in order to estimate absorbed radiation doses following exposures. Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the results of acute cerebral anoxia in adults as a reversal sign. Methods: We retrospectively examined the CT and MR images of 9 patients in a vegetative state due to acute prolonged anoxia. Each of them had at least one MRI and 4 CT exams 6-12 hours, 10-14 days, 6-8 months and 1 year after the anoxic event. The degree of the cerebral atrophy and the mean density values of cerebral white matter were measured and calculated to demonstrate quantitative changes over time. Patients undergoing aortocoronary bypass surgery were randomly assigned to receive cold (+10 ^oC, Group A, n: 36) or tepid (+29 ^oC, Group B, n: 47) blood cardioplegia. The preoperative ejection fraction of all the patients was under 40%. Cardioplegic solution was delivered in antegrade and retrograde fashion in both groups. The myocardial protective effects of these 2 different cardioplegic temperatures were compared in terms of the postoperative cardiac index and left ventricle stroke work index, dopamine and dobutamine requirements in the intensive care unit, intra aortic balloon pump requirement, intensive care unit stay length and mortality ratios.
