The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic importance of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) in lambs with white muscle disease (WMD) and the changes in some serum parameters (glucose, creatinine, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride, Ca, inorganic P, Na, K, Cl, AST, ALT, ALP, LDH and CPK) in healthy and white muscle diseased lambs. The research was carried out on 32 lambs of which 22 showed clinical symptoms and 10 were healthy from 280 lambs raised around Esenyurt-İstanbul. In this study, which was conducted to detect the critical control points and to investigate the direct and cross-contamination sources in white pickled cheese production, 21 control points were examined for aerobe mesophilic counts, staphylococcus-micrococcus, coagulase-positive staphylococcus, enterobacteriaceae, coliform bacteria, E. coli, enterococcus, yeast and mould counts. It was determined that the high microbiological load of raw milk affected the microbiological quality of pasteurized milk negatively, and that the production pipe-line after pasteurization, and equipment such as vats, plastic wraps, pressing cloths, starter culture and the hands of the workers, were direct contamination sources. This study was conducted on sheep and goats to investigate theileriosis and tick infestations around Kayseri between August 1997 and October 1999. During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. Blood smears were prepared from the punctured ear of each animal for microscopic examination. At the same time, ticks were collected from the animals. A total of 426 serum samples were examined from 9 broiler and 7 broiler breeder flocks showing clinical signs of swollen head syndrome (SHS). Turkey rhinotracheitis virus antibodies in 8 broiler flocks were between 31.8 and 75.9% and in broiler breeder flocks between 5.4 and 48.6%, with a commercial ELISA. Typical clinical symptoms were observed for SHS in broilers and broiler breeders. During the study, turkey flocks showing clinical signs were not detected. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of urea or urea plus molasses addition into corn harvested at the milk stage on the silage quality and in vitro digestibility of silage. To achieve this objective, four different corn varieties (Rx-947, 33-94, Frassino and Arifiye) harvested at the milk stage were utilized. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of age, sex and season change on electrocardiograms of Van cats. Thirty-eight (male and female) healthy Van cats, 3-15 months old were used. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) and heart radiographs were obtained from cats seperately in summer, autumn, winter and spring. ECGs were recorded as bipolar, augmented unipolar and precordial leads (CV_6LL, CV_6LU, V_10). Our purpose in this study was to investigate and compare the morphological relationship between the true chordae tendineae (CT) and the false chordae tendineae (FCT). One hundred and forty-seven hearts (8 humans, 23 dogs, 91 sheep, 25 goats) were investigated in our study. In terms of CT number, while the difference between humans and sheep and goats, and dogs and sheep and goats was significant statistically (p < 0.05), the difference between humans and dogs was less significant than the others. The difference between sheep and goats was not significant statistically (p > 0.05). The number of FCT were not significant (p > 0.05) in the other species while the difference between humans and dogs was significant statistically. This study was carried out to determine the normal haematological and biochemical parameters of clinically healthy ostriches 1-3 years old of either sex. Red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin values (as haematological parameters) and glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, kreatinine, serum enzymes (ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, CK, amilase) (as biochemical parameters) and electrolytes (Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Cu, Na, K, Cl) levels were measured. It was concluded that the values obtained in this study could be used as reference values for ostriches.

In this study, 627 live freshwater mussels collected from the Koçkale and Pertek regions of Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. Homogenates prepared from the soft tissue of mussels, after pre-enrichment in Rappaport Vasilliadis, were inoculated onto Brilliant Green Phenol Red Lactose agar and Salmonella-Shigella selective media. Biochemical tests and DNA extraction were carried out on isolates suspected of containing Salmonella. Quality changes in common guitarfish fillets vacuum packed and non-vacuum packed in polyethylene material were investigated during 6 months' cold storage at -18 ^oC. Total yield of the common guitar fish was around 65%. pH, TVB-N, crude protein, moisture, crude ash and fat were 6.50-6.82, 19.87-48.62 mg/100 g, 16.63-22.63%, 75.83-79.88%, 1.00-1.65% and 0.2-0.7%, respectively. The pharmacokinetics of oxytetracycline (OTC) were investigated in rainbow trout in freshwater at 10.5 ^oC. A group of 70 fish received OTC, an intravascular injection (i.v.) of 5 mg/kg body weight. Another group of 105 fish were fed medicated feed containing a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight. OTC plasma concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic parameters were described by a two-compartment open model giving distribution half-lives of 0.907 h and 16.058 h, and elimination half-lives of 33.5 h and 27 h for i.v. and oral administration of OTC, respectively. In this study, Rinderpest virus (RPV) recombinant hemagglutinine protein (rH) fused with protein A region of Staphylococcus aureus was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified by IgG affinity chromatography. rH protein was also used to establish enzyme immunoassay. Therefore, to prevent IgG binding to the protein A the wells coated with the rH proteins were blocked by human serum. Afterwards, RPV antigens were added to the wells to evaluate this assay. This study was carried out to investigate live weight, wool production and some body measurements of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karyaka B_1) sheep. The Karayaka breed is raised in the Black Sea region, while the Sakız (Chios) breed is raised in the coastal areas of western Anatolia. The Bafra type was developed by crossing between Sakız and Karayaka for a female line to use in lamb production. This study was carried out to investigate the fertility traits, survival rate and growth characteristics of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka B_1) genotypes. Karayaka and Bafra genotypes are raised in the Black Sea region of Turkey. In the study, fertility results for Karayaka and Bafra were determined to be 92.3 and 93.7% for birth rates, and 1.08 and 1.78 for litter size, respectively. The survival rates of Karayaka and Bafra lambs at weaning (90 days) were 93.6 and 91.9%, respectively. Experimental toxoplasmosis was induced in rabbits using different routes. A total of 42 animals were used; 36 of them were in the experimental groups and the other six comprised the control group. In addition, five guinea pigs were used for preparing hyperimmune sera against Toxoplasma gondii. The Ankara strain was inoculated intravenously (group I, n: 12), intraperitoneally (group II, n: 12) and intradermally (group III, n: 12) into the rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to establish whether there were any differences in the lipid and lipoprotein levels of dairy cows with fatty liver. Fifty-four dairy cows with fatty liver and 12 healthy dairy cows were used in the study. The liver fat content was determined in all cows histologically. Cows with fatty liver (n = 54) were grouped according to liver fat content as cows with mild (n = 17), moderate (n = 17) or severe(n = 20) fatty liver. The effect of melatonin and progestagen sponge administrations separately and together on the reproductive performance at the onset of the breeding season were investigated in Kıvırcık ewes. On June 22, to 40 anoestrous and non-lactating ewes were administrated melatonin (Regulin) implants. On July 14, progestagen (Synchron) sponges were inserted in 20 of these ewes and in 20 other ewes. They were removed 14 days later and on the day of removal the ewes were given 600 I.U. pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). The other 20 ewes served as controls. The efficacy of doramectin (Dectomax, Pfizer) and moxidectin (Cydectin, Abfar) against gastrointestinal nematode infection was evaluated in cows which were naturally infected with these nematodes. For that purpose over 100 cows' faeces were tested for gastrointestinal nematodes with the saturated salt solution method. Infected cows were selected according to the McMaster criteria. To establish whether the cows were infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, their coprocultures were screened for the presence of Ostertagia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus and Trichostrongylus species. The fatty acid (FA) composition of some tissues of Salmo trutta labrax, Pallas, 1811 mature native freshwater wild salmon species caught from Kazandere creek in the Çoruh region in Turkey were investigated. Fatty acids profiles of muscle, liver, gonad, egg and adipose tissue were compared in terms of total and individual saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The results showed that the highest total saturated fatty acid content was in the muscle (37.20 ± 1.13%) while the lowest value was in the egg (27.12 ± 2.53%), and the differences were significant (P < 0.05) among the tissues.
