Thirty-five methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates were collected from 3 hospitals in the northern and southern parts of Palestine between February and May 1998. These isolates were typed by ribosome spacer PCR (RS-PCR) and arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR). RS-PCR generated 9 different genotypes. The use of AP-PCR provided a high resolution typing method and allowed us to define 11 different clusters. Three major clusters, however, based on the combination of both typing methods, spread throughout the neonatal and intensive care units of Rafidya Hospital during the entire period.

Recent evidance supports the concept that Epirubicin-HCI and Lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK) cytotoxicity may be mediated by free radical and oxyradical generation. We tested this hypothesis further by exposing Hep G2 cells to Epirubicin-HCI and LAK cells and subsequently monitored cell viability as a measure of cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity of LAK alone and LAK together with low dose epirubicin-HCI (IC50 1/10) which is measured using the MTT cytotoxicity test on viability of Hep G2 cells and sensitization of target cells to effector cells was investigated. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) sensitivity of acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) cells is strictly dependent on the presence of t(15;17), but the molecular background of this sensitivity remains obscure. We showed the down- regulation of DEK, AF4 and FLI1 genes in the vitamin D treatment of APL cell line HL-60 , using cDNA array technology in our previous study. Although bone healing around titanium implants has already been evaluated, the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) during the period of bone maturation around titanium dental implants has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PEMFs on bone formation following the insertion of titanium-dental implants in the rabbit mandibular model. We performed a serological evaluation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections at the time of labor. In order to determine the seroprevalence of asymptomatic HSV infections in pregnant women, blood samples were collected for antibody measurement from 130 randomly selected pregnant women. Presence of HSV IgG and IgM antibodies in the serum samples was tested by ELISA. The prevalence of HSV-1 gG1 antibodies was 90% (117/130), that of HSV-2 gG2 antibodies was 63.1% (82/130) and that of HSV-2 IgM antibodies was 13.8% (18/130). The sex composition, age, length and body mass relationship, Von Bertalanffy growth equation and condition factor of 342 individuals were investigated to determine some population parameters of goldfish (Carassius auratus L., 1758) between June 1998 and May 1999 in Lake Eğirdir. Sex composition was 32.75 % females and 67.25 % males and the fish were 0-IV years old. The length-body mass relationship was W = 0.0210 L^{3,0598}, the Von Bertalanffy growth equation was Lt = 122.7 [1-e^{-0.033(t+3.74)}] and the average condition factor was 2.520 ± 0.012. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of 0.5% urea or 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses into some sorghum varieties (Gözde, P-988, Grazer and Grass-II) harvested at the dough stage on silage quality, in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility and digestible DM yields. The spermatological characteristics of merino rams' semen collected with an artificial vagina (AV) and electro-ejeculator (EE) were compared. The semen was evaluated for volume (ml), mass activity (0-5, no activity to rapid wave), motility (%), sperm concentration (x 10^9/ml) and abnormal spermatozoa percentage. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of lice species on wild geese in the Elazığ district. Twenty wild geese were inspected for lice species between January and February in 1998 and 2001. Nine of these geese had been exposed to lice infestations and Anaticola anseris (Linnaeus, 1758) composed all the collected 92 lice. The morphological description of A. anseris was based on microscopy and microphotography pictures were taken.

In this study Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents were analysed in 3 molluscs (Octopus vulgaris, Sepia officinalis, Loligo vulgaris) and in one crustacean sample (Parapenaeus longirostris) caught in the Gulf of Antalya in January-March 2000. In molluscs, Cu content was determined to be between 1.82 and 6.22 mg/kg, and in crustacea, it was determined to be between 4.24 and 7.40 mg/kg. In the mollusc and crustacea specimens Zn content was 10.95-21.52 mg/kg and 11.73-14.27 mg/kg, respectively. Pb and Cd are the 2 most important heavy metals for human health. This study was carried out in Ankara province, Turkey, between September 1996 and August 1998. During the study 1208 sheep, 1001 goats and 1059 cattle were examined for Haemaphysalis ticks. These examinations revealed that 380 (37.96%) goats, 346 (28.64%) sheep and 203 (19.16%) cattle had Haemaphysalis infestation. In total, 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks were collected from these animals. They were identified as H. parva, H. sulcata, H. punctata and Haemaphysalis nymphs. Of the 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks 89.70% were H. parva adults, 0.28% H. parva nymphs, 6.64% H. sulcata adults, 2.05% H. punctata adults and 0.13% H. punctata nymphs, while 0.89% were …

This study was carried out to determine the dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) digestibilities, and metabolizable energy levels of some forages commonly used in ruminant nutrition by 2 different in vitro methods; the enzyme technique and the 2- stage method (rumen fluid + HCl-pepcine). Seven different samples of alfalfa hays, sainfoin hay and grass hay, and 4 different samples of wheat straws, lentil straw, corn silage and sorghum silage were used in the experiment. Yield Traits Of Geese Of Different Origins Reared In Turkey I. Hatching Traits, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal

This study was carried out to determine the hatching traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. In the experiment, geese were selected from different regions of Turkey, (Kars-INRA), Isparta-Armutlu, Konya-Başkuyu and Konya-Tatlıcak); 20 female and 4 male 2-year-old geese were used. Egg production was 39.4, 13.0, 11.4 and 12.6 eggs/geese, and egg laying period was 133, 75, 60 and 73 days, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the original egg weight and hatched chick weight (P < 0.01). Egg weight loss proportions during incubation for the experimental groups were 12.92, 11.44, 11.38 and 12.22%, respectively.

The aim of this study was to determine the quality changes of anchovy (Engraulis engrasicholus, L. 1758) and bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix, L. 1766) due to a multiple freezing-thawing process. The samples were stored in straphor plate at -30 ºC and thawed in a refrigerator (+4 ± 1 ºC, 16 h), microwave (180 W, 15 m) and in running water (+21 ± 1 ºC, 2h) for 15 day periods. The purpose of this study was to isolate Pasteurella spp and other aerobic bacterial agents from the lungs of sheep and goats with pneumonia and to identify Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica by both culture methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, mouse pathogenecity tests were carried out on suspected P. multocida isolates. Lungs from 8222 cattle slaughtered at an abattoir in Elazığ were examined macroscopically, and pneumonia was detected in 500 (6.1%) lungs. These samples were inoculated onto blood agar supplemented with 7% sheep blood for isolation of bacterial agents. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based upon the use of species-specific primers was carried out on DNA samples extracted from suspected Pasteurella spp. isolates. Effects Of Different Diets On The Growth Performance, Gonad Development And Body Composition At First Sexual Maturity Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Devri̇m Memi̇ş, Hüseyi̇n Gün

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss with an initial mean weight of 174 g (1+ year old) were fed on 3 different commercial diets (1 extruded pellet and 2 steam pellet) in the same environmental conditions until their first spawning. Changes in growth performance (weight gain, condition factor, specific growth rate and feed conversion rate), gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and body composition (protein, lipid, ash and dry matter) were investigated. The mean weight gain and condition factor for fish fed the extruded diet was significantly greater than for those fed the steam pellet diets (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, mean length increments and feed conversion rate among the groups, although the feed conversion rate for the extruded diet was slightly lower than the others. The HSI of the group fed an extruded diet was significantly greater than those of the others ( P < 0.05 ). The GSI values of female and male fish at the end of the study (October) did not differ significantly among the groups. Similarly, diet had no significant effects on the muscle composition of the trial fish, except that the muscle lipid of the group fed the extruded diet was significantly higher than those of the other groups (P < 0.05).

This study was carried out to determine body weight and some body measurements of Kars dogs. Thirty-three adult (2+ years old) male and 27 female Kars dogs, raised by different breeders in several villages of the Kars region, were used. Body weight and all body measurements except for distance between the ears were higher in males than in females (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).

This study was carried out to determine the effects of phenobarbital, administered orally and intraperitoneally over different periods, on paraoxonase, arylesterase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities and total protein levels in the serum and liver. Thirty-six rats, 16-18 weeks old and weighing 240-260 g, were used. Phenobarbital was applied both orally and intraperitoneally at a dose of 100 mg/kg. Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in serum and liver samples were measured spectrophotometrically using paraoxon and phenylasetate substrates, respectively. The aim was to estimate the genetic parameters for birth and weaning weights of Turkish Merino lambs by separating direct genetic, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Data and pedigree information of the Turkish Merino sheep used in this study were collected at the Marmara Animal Breeding Research Institute from 1995 to 2001. Variance components for birth and weaning weights were estimated by the REML technique. Six different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal effects. A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. A 27.2 kb plasmid in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ELL23, a 32.7 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC5 and a 31.1 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC19 were found to determine exopolysaccharide production (Eps^+) and lactose fermentation (Lac^+) abilities at the end of conjugal transfer studies. Conjugal transfer frequencies (per donor cell) and stability rates of Lac^+/Eps^+ plasmids were determined as 1.0 x 10^{-2 }- 2.8 x 10^{-3} and 80-96%, respectively, after conjugal matings between the aggregative (Agg^+) wild type strains and Agg^+ recipient strain L. lactis subsp. lactis LLT40.
