Glibenclamide (Glyburide), a widely used second-generation sulfonylurea hypoglycemic agent, is a known specific blocker of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) sensitive potassium (K+) channels. Although the blockage of the ATP dependent potassium channel reduces arrhythmia, it increases enfarct size. Yohimbine is an alpha-2 blocker that reduces infarct size as suggested by several studies. We hypothesized that a combination of yohimbine and glibenclamide may be more effective in reducing the arrhythmia following ligation. The arteria descendence (LAD) branch of the left coronary artery in conscious rats was ligated and arrhythmia was recorded during the 15 min following coronary ligation. The purpose of this study was to determine the dentoalveolar and skeletal effects of a Goshgarian transpalatal arch (TPA) in unilateral maxillary first molar distalization. The treatment group consisted of 15 patients (6 females and 9 males) between 10.8 and 12.1 years of age. The maxillary first molars, which were in a dental Class I relationship (anchorage molars), were the anchorage units, while the molars in Class II relationship (distalized molars) were distalized using a TPA with 150 g. of force. It is not clear whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection affects insulin levels and insulin sensitivity. We aimed to determine insulin sensitivity and beta cell function, and to evaluate serum lipids in subjects with and without Hp infection. Eighty non-obese young adult males, 40 of whom were Hp positive and 40 were negative, were included in the study. Two endoscopic biopsy specimens were obtained from each subject. Height, weight and waist-hip circumference were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Serum glucose, total, HDL, LDL and VLDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels were determined. Our aim is to identify whether the primary care institutions in Edirne are used as a first contact point for health services. Investigation Of The Bactericidal Effects Of Vancomycin And Quinupristin/Dalfopristin On Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates, Mi̇ne Hoşgör Li̇moncu, Şafak Ermertcan, Güner Coşar

The present study aimed to determine the correlation between the bactericidal activity of vancomycin and quinupristin/dalfopristin (Q/D) on Staphylococcus aureus isolates and their minimal inhibition concentrations. The in-vitro susceptibilities of the 99 S. aureus isolates to vancomycin and Q/D were investigated by agar dilution. Thirty methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 30 methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) vancomycin and Q/D susceptible isolates were involved in time-kill studies. While both MRSA and MSSA isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, 96% of both isolates were determined as susceptible to Q/D. Unsuccessful cadaveric kidney transplantation still remains as an important problem in organ transplantation. Cold storage solutions are not very efficient for kidney preservation. Vitamin E is an important dietary antioxidant, which may play a vital role in preventing free radical perfusion injury. We investigated the effect of vitamin E on kidney preservation with Euro-Collins (EC) solution using the isolated perfused dog kidney model. The sulcus angle of the femoral trochlea is particularly important for evaluating the patellofemoral joint. Our experimental study aimed to assess the osseous femoral sulcus angle radiologically in the right and left knees and osteologically in the right and left femurs in males and females. The osseous sulcus angle of 28 male right, 22 male left, 21 female right and 29 female left knees was measured on magnetic resonance images (MRIs) and by a goniometer; the angle was measured in 40 right and 40 left femurs. Recovery Of 1-Chloro-2,4-Dinitrobenzene Detoxification By N-Acetyl- L-Cysteine In Glutathione Predepleted Human Erythrocytes, Deni̇z Yildiz, C.Işil Kuran

Glutathione is an important thiol-containing compound involved in the detoxification process in erythrocytes. Its thiol group reacts with a variety of xenobiotics in a glutathione S-transferase catalyzed reaction to form conjugates that are effluxed from the erythrocytes by an ATP dependent transport mechanism. A well studied experimental system is the transport of the conjugate of glutathione and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. We investigated whether N-acetyl-L-cysteine protects the free-SH content and restores 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene detoxification in erythrocytes or replaces glutathione in detoxification process in glutathione predepleted erythrocytes. Our results indicate that N-acetyl-L-cysteine restores the intracellular free-SH content following depletion by 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and N-ethylmaleimide. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (10 …

This study was conducted to determine brucellosis seropositivity in patients suspected of having brucellosis who sought treatment at the Central Laboratory of Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital in southeast Turkey (Diyarbakır). 20,663 serum samples were collected during the study (1 August 2001-31 December 2002), and 14,480 sera were tested in a 12-month period on a seasonal basis by Rose-Bengal slide agglutination (RBSA), and positive sera were titrated by standard tube agglutination (STA). Titration values of 1/160 and above were considered positive. Of the 20663 sera, 463 (2.2%) tested positive on RBSA. Of these 463 sera, 267 (57.6%) tested positive on …

Norfloxacin is a poorly water soluble drug, and to improve its solubility it was complexed with b-cyclodextrin (BCD). Several ocular patches/inserts of norfloxacin-b-cyclodextrin were prepared in hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) matrix. The influence of rate controlling membranes made of ethyl cellulose (EC) alone and in combination with polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) in different proportions on drug release kinetics was studied. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of weight loss induced by pharmacotherapy combined with a hypocaloric diet for a period of 8-weeks on maximal work (Wmax) production capacity and aerobic fitness in obese patients. Twelve obese females were put on an integrated energy restricted diet with orlistat supplement 3 x 120 mg/day. Under conditions that may risk the success of flap surgery, free skin grafting may be an option for the reconstruction of the irradiated area. Clinical observations reveal that skin grafts applied to irradiated area undergo ulceration, resulting in chronic open wounds. The role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in problem wounds is to increase the tissue oxygen tension to optimize fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, to enhance the oxidative killing capacity of the white blood cells and to stimulate angiogenesis. Wound biology is complex. Wounds which were until recently seen only as defects in tissues are now increasingly interpreted in cellular and molecular terms. Growth factors, cytokines, proteases and adhesion molecules which participate in wound healing are discussed in this article. From a clinical perspective, conceptual shifts of importance, including moist wound healing, wound bed preparation and wound assessment, are presented. The major causes of death in burn patients include multiple organ failure and infection. It is important for the clinician to understand the pathophysiology of burn injury and the effects it will have on the pharmacokinetics of a drug. The local and systemic inflammatory response to thermal injury is extremely complex, resulting in both local burn tissue damage and deleterious systemic effects on all other organ systems distant from the burn area itself. Genotoxic Evaluation Of The Antibacterial Drug, Ciprofloxacin, In Cultured Lymphocytes Of Patients With Urinary Tract Infection, Mevli̇t İkbal, Hasan Doğan, Hati̇ce Odabaş, İbrahi̇m Pi̇ri̇m

Ciprofloxacin is a quinolone carboxylic acid derivative and is commonly used in medicine. The genotoxicity of ciprofloxacin was evaluated in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with urinary tract infection. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE), mitotic index (MI) and replicative index (RI) were measured before and after ciprofloxacin therapy. Our results showed that SCE frequency significantly increased after ciprofloxacin therapy (P < 0.001), but MI and RI decreased (P < 0.001). The results of this study suggest that clinical therapy using ciprofloxacin may have a moderate genotoxic potential.

Behçet´s disease is a chronic multisystemic inflammatory vasculitis of unknown etiology. Various infectious agents have been implicated as potential triggering factors in the pathogenesis of the disease. The present study was designed to evaluate the seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in Turkish patients with Behçet´s disease. For this purpose, 90 consecutive patients with Behçet´s disease and 50 healthy individuals were enrolled into a prospective study. In this study, 212 Acanthobrama marmid Heckel, 1843 individuals were caught at monthly periods from Keban Dam Lake between January 1997 and December 1998 and transported live to the laboratory. After haematological analysis was carried out on the blood samples taken from their hearts, total lengths and weights were measured. The sex of the fish was identified and their ages were determined from the scales. The total amounts of erythrocytes, leucocytes, thrombocytes, haemoglobin and haematocrits and MCV, MCH and MCHC parameters were determined from blood samples.
