Effectiveness Of Homeopathy For The Treatment Of Pseudopregnancy In Bitches, Ni̇hat Özyurtlu, Erol Alaçam

The effects of homeopathy on pseudopregnancy in bitches were investigated. Thirty clinically pseudopregnant bitches were used. Fifteen dogs were treated by homeopathy and the remaining animals received placebo treatment. Thuja D30 globules, which contain Thuja Occidentalis, were given orally (8 globules, 3 times a day) as a homeopathic agent. Clinical response was evaluated every 5 days. Maximum duration of the treatment was 3 weeks. Physical changes in mammary glands and behavioral response were evaluated during the treatment. This study was conducted to determine some histochemical properties of the ceruminous glands located in the meatus acusticus externus in cats and dogs. Ten cats and 10 dogs of various breeds were used as the study materials. To determine the properties of the secretions of the ceruminous glands in the meatus acusticus externus of cats and dogs, the periodic acid Schiff (PAS) stain was used for neutral mucosubstances and glycogen, while the Alcian blue stain (pH 2.5) was applied for the presence of acidic mucosubstances. Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma (Vafs) With Multiple Recurrences In A Turkish Van Cat, Yilmaz Aydin, Babür Bi̇li̇r

Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. Aspergillosis And Gastric Impaction In An Ostrich, Azi̇z Arda Sancak, Jale Paracikoğlu

It is inevitable to encounter many diseases of ostriches in Turkey as a consequence of the rapid expansion of ostrich farming and flocks in this country. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the lungs and air sacs of a 3-month-old, male, blue-neck ostrich. In postmortem examination, the ingestion of a large amount of gravel was noted. The accumulated gravel had led to an occlusion of the passage between the proventriculus and gizzard. This work appears to be the first report of aspergillosis and gastric impaction developing together and leading to death in an ostrich.

The organs of an aborted equine fetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. Diffuse, mild cellular infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells was observed in the lamina propria of the intestine. In addition, bacterial colonies were seen in the intestinal content, wall of intestine and liver. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated in pure culture from all organs. This is the first report of the isolation of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus from an aborted equine fetus in Turkey.

Unilateral uterine prolapse that occurred immediately after parturition was diagnosed in a 15-month-old cat brought to the clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. Depending on clinical and ultrasonographic examination findings, the other uterine horn was though to be invaginated into the prolapsed horn. To purpose of treatment, ovariohysterectomy was performed. During laparotomy, the non-pregnant right uterine horn was seen to be invaginated into the pregnant uterine horn.

Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) is particularly well suited for imaging small animals, and it can be readily used by scientists who are already routinely using the luciferase gene as a reporter in cell-based assays. This strategy relies on ATP and an O_2 dependent photochemical reaction between luciferin and luciferase, resulting in the release of photons from only live cells. In BLI, the intensity of the light detected by the device is proportional to the intensity of light emitted and the relationship is quantitative. Differential Effect Of Glutathione Depletion On Glycogenolysis In Isolated Rat Hepatocytes Mediated By A-Adrenoceptor Agonists And Glucagon, Mukadder Atmaca, Jeffrey R. Fry

Glutathione (GSH) exerts a variety of cytoprotecive effects, but is readily depleted from cells under a variety of stressful stimuli. The impact of GSH depletion on receptor-mediated activity in rat hepatocytes has been studied with regard to glycogenolysis stimulated with a-adrenoceptor agonists or glucagon, which exert their actions through different signalling pathways. Depletion of GSH content (70%) by diethyl maleate had no effect on the redox status of the cells or on basal or glucagon-stimulated glycogenolysis, but significantly reduced the response to the a-adrenoceptor agonists adrenalin and phenylephrine. Recent technology enables the use of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and serum for noninvasive prenatal genetic diagnosis. This study was designed to evaluate factors most likely to influence the success of a simple, cost efficient, reliable and replicable conventional PCR technique in the clinical routine of prenatal genetic diagnosis of selected cases. The results strongly suggest that DNA extraction and PCR cycle optimization are 2 major success-limiting steps and the maternal plasma is a better choice over serum for DNA extraction for such prenatal genetic diagnosis. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of orally administered granisetron, a 5-HT_3 receptor antagonist, and its possible effect on serum histamine and serotonin levels in uremic pruritic patients who have not yet undergone dialysis. Fourteen patients with newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease were asked to complete a questionnaire about pruritus, and histamine, serotonin, PTH and cortisol levels were measured on days 0, 7 and 14. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the main environmental pollutants in urban areas. Cytogenetic analysis of chromosomal aberrations is of great concern as they are involved in the mechanism of carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to assess the genotoxic effect of occupational exposure to PAHs in a group of 30 Bulgarian traffic policemen compared to 30 office clerks. In this study we present a noninvasive and nonradioactive glucose in vitro measurement technique using the Mueller polarization analytical model. The glucose solution and aqueous humor phantoms are illuminated with a He-Ne (632.8 nm) laser. This in vitro study provides a base and reference data for in vivo eye glucose monitoring. The 16 Mueller polarization matrix element images give information about eye absorption and scattering, and changes in polarization patterns to measure glucose concentration. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of vaginal insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-I) in the detection of amniotic fluid leakage after amniocentesis. It includes 58 healthy pregnant women who successfully underwent amniocentesis at 15-20 weeks of gestation. After amniocentesis patients were evaluated for amniotic fluid leakage at 60 min, 48 h, and 6 weeks after the procedure with speculum examination, nitrazine paper test and microscopic evidence of ferning, and were grouped into Group I (at least 2 positive tests) and Group II (others) according to the first evaluation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) on autogenous cortical bone resorption in rats. Fifty-six male Wistar rats were used and divided into the baseline group (n = 8), the experimental group (n = 24) and the control group (n = 24). Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug. It is used to control grandmal seizure as well as in the treatment of neuralgia. The drug is characterised by slow and irregular gastrointestinal absorption due to its low water solubility. In clinics, for conventional dosage forms of CBZ, single daily dosing is insufficient; effective CBZ level is provided by multiple drug administration. Nucleic acid amplification methods to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in clinical specimens are increasingly used to diagnose tuberculosis. A number of nucleic acids amplification assays have been developed to detect MTBC DNA in clinical material. These assays differ in their requirements for sample volume and sample preparation, methods of amplification, and methods of detection. There are advantages and disadvantages of all assays; thus, there is probably no assay which is best suited to all situations.
