Aim: Most of the lipids of the skin surface come from the sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum. Some of the sebum lipids are synthesized by sebaceous cells while some are reported to be derived from the plasma. The role of blood lipoproteins in sebum secretion rate and composition is unclear. Aim: The elderly have defective host defenses that compromise their ability to ward off infectious agents; factors influencing immunocompetence include impaired host defenses such as diminished cell-mediated immunity, changes in chronic diseases, medications, malnutrition and functional impairments. Aim: The insertion of ventilation tubes at the time of cleft palate surgery is a controversial issue. We assessed the status of hearing and the middle ear in long-term follow-up after the treatment of cleft palate. Materials and Methods: 56 patients with cleft palate repair at the ages of 15 to 24 months were included in the study. The control group consisted of 15 patients in whom ventilation tubes were inserted previously for secretory otitis media. They all had audiologic analyses. The presence of a supernumerary tooth in the nose is an unusual phenomenon and a rare form of ectopic tooth eruption in the maxillofacial region. In this case, the patient was referred to the hospital with the complaint of severe headache. In the endoscopic examination, the supernumerary tooth crown was not covered with mucosa or granulation tissue. In the present study, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a supernumerary tooth located in the nose is reported.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder. The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis requires the presence of two major or one major and two minor features. Pulmonary involvement has been reported to occur in less than 1% in patients and carries a poor prognosis. We present a female tuberous sclerosis patient with pulmonary involvement, evaluated for a positive PPD reaction.

Chondroblastic osteosarcoma (COS), a subgroup of intramedullary osteosarcoma, is usually located in the knee region of the body. It is most common in adolescents and early adulthood. COS has similar clinical and radiological features to those of conventional osteosarcomas. A 17-year-old male suffered from walking problems and lower limb pain. CT and MRI revealed a mass with soft tissue density and bone destruction at the level of L5-S1. It was described as \"posttraumatic hematoma\". Aim: The objectives of this study were to compare interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in newborns with culture-proven sepsis with levels in age- and gestational age (GA)-matched controls, and to investigate the correlation between mediator levels and circulatory functions in the septic group. Materials and Methods: Samples for IL-6 and NO levels were obtained from newborns with blood culture-proven sepsis before the beginning of antibiotic therapy and on the 3rd day of treatment. Aim: The precise pathogenetic mechanisms causing thrombotic complications in Behçet´s disease (BD) are still not known. To explain the pathogenesis with coagulation induction or a defective fibrinolysis superimposed on endothelial dysfunction, various hemostatic parameters were studied. Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), downregulating plasmin generation and fibrinolysis, is a novel risk factor for thrombotic disorders. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the dose-related effects of fenthion on the liver and kidney and the correlation between severity of organ damage and serum butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzyme levels. Materials and Methods: Ninety rats were randomly subdivided into control group and 4 study groups. Control group was administered 1 ml of saline intraperitoneally. Congenital diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition in adults and is defined as an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. In adults, diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory impairment that is associated with severe dyspnea, orthopnea and hypoxia. Most of the symptomatic patients may survive with supportive therapy without any need for surgical correction, though they are at risk of spontaneous diaphragm rupture. Clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) include repeated episodes of arterial and/or venous thrombosis, recurrent fetal wastage, and premature births. Correct diagnosis of APS requires identification of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL). Other antibodies such as anti-b2 glycoprotein-I have also been detected. A 32-year-old man presented with acute left-sided hemiplegia and was admitted with a possible diagnosis of primary APS. A pulmonary embolus-in-transit was captured incidentally by transthoracic echocardiographic study.

Aim: Catalepsy occurs following high dopamine D2 receptor blockade by the typical antipsychotic drug haloperidol. The present study investigated the effect of different drugs affecting monoamine neurotransmission in this animal model of Parkinson's disease in mice. Materials and Methods: Drugs were intraperitoneally administered with haloperidol 30 min prior to testing. Catalepsy was measured using the bar test. Results: Catalepsy duration was reduced by the non-selective noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake inhibitors imipramine and amitriptyline (21.1% and 22.3% reduction by 20 mg/kg imipramine and amitriptyline, respectively). Aim: The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in patients with diarrhea who attended Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital in Gaza. Materials and Methods: From January to May 2005, single stool specimens from each of 416 children attending Al-Nasser Hospital were examined by Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) stain and ELISA for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Results: Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 62 (14.9%) of the tested specimens by acid-fast staining technique and in 68 (16.3%) using ELISA kit. Montelukast, widely used in the treatment of asthma, is a selective and potent oral cysteinyl leukotriene-1 receptor antagonist. In this study, we investigated the effects of montelukast on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in childhood asthma by measuring malondialdehyde and the paraoxonase activity. Twenty-five children with mild to moderate atopic asthma and 25 nonatopic children as controls were enrolled in the study. Asthmatic children were treated with montelukast, 5 mg tablets, for one month. Serum paraoxonase, malondialdehyde and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were measured before and after treatment. A 49-year-old male, who had undergone mitral valve replacement with mechanical cardiac valve and coronary arterial by-pass grafting six years previously, was admitted to our hospital with acute dyspnea. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed that one of the leaflets of the prosthetic valve was entirely immobilized in the closed position, and an immobile soft tissue mass was detected on the ventricular side of the obstructed leaflet. A 56-year-old man had a 6 x 5-cm mass originating from the fossa ovalis in the atrial septum found by echocardiography and multiple enlarging scalp masses. The mass had a regular surface and was prolapsing into the mitral valve during diastole. The tumor was successfully treated by surgical excision, which revealed a well-defined mass with a narrow-base stalk originating from the fossa ovalis in the atrial septum. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxoma. The scalp masses were also removed surgically; histopathologic examination corresponded to benign trichilemmal cyst. Penile fractures are classically described as presenting with rapid detumescence of an erection associated with blunt trauma. This clinical finding is due to a tear in the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosum. In this study, we report and discuss a case of trichotillomania and penile bending impulse resulting in penile fracture, which was operated in the urology clinic. The possible psychological and psychiatric problems underlying the impulsive behavior are discussed, and the value of a psychiatric evaluation is emphasized.

Avian influenza virus stocks (A/chicken/Iran/259/1998/(H9N2)) were propagated in the allantoic cavities of 10-day-old embryonated chicken eggs. The harvested suspension was concentrated by polyethylene glycol 6000. Concentrated samples were layered onto sucrose gradient (30%-60%). Both hemagglutinin and neuraminidase were solubilized from purified viruses with Triton X-100 across 30% sucrose gradient. NA was isolated from HA and other viral proteins by affinity chromatography on N-(p-aminophenyl)oxamic acid. Fractions that had high NA activity and did not show HA activity were pooled and analyzed by neuraminidase inhibition and SDS-PAGE. In this study, 130 Escherichia coli strains isolated from 306 cattle and sheep fecal samples were studied for their resistance to 10 antibiotics, verotoxin production, and hemolyzation. The antibiotic resistance rates of the E. coli strains were as follows: tetracycline, 51.6%; streptomycin, 24.2%; ampicillin, 13.1%; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, 5.2%; gentamycin, 4.6%; ciprofloxacin, 4.6%; trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 4.3%; cefotaxime, 0.7%. None of the strains were resistant to cefepime or ceftazidime. Of all the antibiotics tested, only resistance to streptomycin was higher in the strains isolated from cattle than in the sheep strains (P = 0.043). Differences in the protein and plasmid content of 2 Lactococcus lactis strains, L. lactis subsp. lactis LL52 and L. lactis subsp. cremoris LC79, under the stresses of high and low temperature, osmotic shock, and low pH were determined. We identified 3 new proteins with molecular masses of 16.0, 29.4, and 45.0 kDa as high temperature stress response specific in strain LL52. High temperature stress did not cause any changes in the protein content of strain LC79. The objectives of this study were to isolate and identify Mycoplasma gallisepticum in quails with clinical and pathological signs of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), and to compare the sensitivity and specificity of commonly used serological tests that are used for the detection of M. gallisepticum antibodies. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in horses bred for sport in the province of Ankara. Sera collected from 100 clinically healthy horses were tested for the presence of L. monocytogenes antibodies using the Osebold absorption test. Agglutination titers >= 1:100 were accepted as positive results and a seropositivity rate was determined. Of the 100 serum samples, 62 were seropositive for L. monocytogenes antibodies detected at dilutions of 1:100 (n = 29, 46.7%), 1:200 (n = 31, 50%), and 1:400 (n = 2, 3.2%).

Microscopic and macroscopic structures of accessory adrenal nodules in Caspian miniature horses (5 males and 5 females) were studied. The accessory adrenal nodules were round or oval and yellow to red. Their maximum diameters varied from 0.1 to 0.5 cm. These nodules were found near the kidneys and adrenal glands, but they were in close contact with the adrenal gland. The accessory adrenal nodules were similar to the adrenal cortex microscopically, and from the outer layer to the inner layer they contained glomerulosa, intermedia, and fasciculata.
