Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a rare clinical entity in childhood. Two children, aged 10 and 14 years, were hospitalized for acute abdominal pain. Clinical and laboratory findings were compatible with AP. Both patients were given supportive medications. Two days after admission, the first patient had purpuric lesions on both buttocks and lower extremities, and occult bleeding. The clinical picture was consistent with Henoch-Schonlein purpura, with pancreatitis and gastrointestinal involvement. The patient’s clinical condition improved rapidly after administration of prednisolone. The second patient had digital clubbing on physical examination, and positive sweat chloride test results led to the diagnosis of cystic …

Congenital absence of Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) is a rare disorder. This anomaly may be an isolated entity or may be associated with other organ, or system anomalies (1). Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney (MCDK) is a congenital mal-development in which the renal cortex is replaced by numerous cysts of multiple sizes. Urologic and non-urologic anomalies may accompany MCDK (2). In this paper, we detail a case of congenital agenesis of ICA and the existence of MCDK. To our knowledge, this is the first of such a case to be reported regarding the co-occurrence of ICA agenesis and MCDK.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Gram-negative microorganisms are responsible for a significant percentage of systemic bacterial infections in neonates, which tend to progress to sepsis. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), one of the receptors in the innate immune system, binds to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) present on gram-negative bacteria. Following ligation, a cascade of cellular signals leads to activation of NF\kappaB, resulting in the generation of such proinflammatory cytokines as TNF\alpha, IL-1, IL-2, and IL-6. These are the mediators of inflammation, which is the cellular response to activation of the innate immune system. As such, TLR4 appears to be a very likely candidate involved in the …

The Relationship Between Morphometric And Long Bone Measurements Of The Morkaraman Sheep, Hasan Alpak, Vedat Onar, Rifat Mutuş
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, a total of 40 adult female Morkaraman sheep, a local Turkish breed, were used. After taking their body measurements and carcass weights, the meat was cut off the bones; the skeletal bones were then removed, macerated and every long bone weighed. Thereafter, morphometric measurements of the long bones were taken. The coefficients obtained from the correlation of osteometric measurements and morphological data were in general low (r < 0.600), though certain relationships were found to be significant. Regression of morphological variables on osteometric measurements was statistically significant. By this, regression formulas were obtained which can contribute to predict the visible morphology in zooarchaeological studies. Length measurements would be more suitable for predicting shoulder height than using width measurements of the long bone. On the other hand, body and carcass weights and chest circle would be determined more efficiently by measuring the width of long bones (Bp, Bd, SD). Furthermore, the humero-femoral index formula can be used to identify sheep in an archaeological bone collection of several animals.
