To investigate the relationship between aluminum and spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) development. Materials and methods: A patient group and a control group were formed with 100 individuals in each. The serum aluminum levels of the groups were determined and statistically compared. Results: The mean serum aluminum levels were 5.6 ± 2.4 \mug/L (1.6-11.9) and 23.2 ± 15.4 \mug/L (2-81) in the control and SP groups, respectively (P < 0.001). The specificity and sensitivity of the measurement of aluminum level were 74.4% and 86.4% in the SP group. The risk of SP development was found to be 18 times higher in individuals with high serum levels of aluminum compared to that in individuals with low serum levels of aluminum. Conclusion: A high level of aluminum is a risk factor for the development of SP.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a major role in the regulation of vascular tone. Production of NO can be influenced by polymorphisms of the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) gene, which may be associated with the pathogenesis of essential hypertension (EHT). Therefore, eNOS gene intron 4 a/b variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) and intron 23 polymorphisms were investigated in patients with EHT living in a central area of Turkey. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 91 patients (34 M, 57 F) with EHT, aged 38-76 years, and 75 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (35 M, 40 F). eNOS gene …

To investigate the effects of ingesting Fructus vitis minuta (black grape) on plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant parameters in elderly subjects. Materials and methods: Thirteen subjects (mean age 74.67 ± 0.58) participated in the study. They consumed 1 g/kg body weight per day of dried black Maraş grapes for 1 month. Before and after these periods, fasting blood samples were obtained, and oxidant (as MDA) and antioxidant (as SOD) parameters were studied in erythrocytes. Also, plasma samples were obtained from the subjects. Results: In the erythrocyte hemolysate, MDA (malondialdehydes) levels and SOD (superoxide dismutase) activities were found to be lower (P < 0.01) in the second samples compared to the first ones. Conclusion: We think that because free radical production was decreased SOD activities were not increased. Our results show that reduced peroxidation processes caused by Maraş grape consumption suggest that grape consumption has beneficial effects in elderly subjects.

After conventional aqueous disinfectant solutions, it was shown that microorganisms were still protected in hair follicles. We hypothesized that those aqueous disinfectant solutions when used in combination with alcohol may be more effective on the inhibition of recolonization of skin and therefore catheter tip colonization. Materials and methods: Skin surface samples were taken from epidural catheter insertion sites prior to catheterization, and before and after disinfection with different combinations of povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, and alcohol. Before catheter removal, cultures were taken once more and tips of the catheters were cultured. Results: Catheter tip colonization and skin culture results of 10% povidone-iodine …

Materials and methods: Experimental allergic conjunctivitis was provoked by a mast cell activator (compound 48/80) in 31 New Zealand rabbits. The rabbits were divided into 3 groups, and 1% CAPE, 0.1% olopatadine hydrochloride, and 0.1% dexamethasone sodium phosphate were instilled 30 min before and 15 min after the provocation. The edema and hyperemia in the experimental (right) eyes and control (left) eyes were scored in each group. Anterior segment photographs and conjunctival samples for histopathological evaluation and scoring were taken. …

Fluoride intake in high doses has toxic effects on various organs. Chronic fluorosis results in tubular degenerations, inflammation, fibrosis, parenchymatous nephritis, cloudy swellings, and dilations of convoluted tubules. In addition to these effects, fluoride causes deteriorative effects on the skeleton, teeth, and soft tissues. The goal of this study was to examine the impacts of chronic fluorosis on the liver tissues of mice. Materials and methods: One control group and 3 experimental groups, each group consisting of 4 male and 4 female mice, were formed to conduct the experiment. A stock solution including 2000 ppm fluoride was prepared by solving …

To evaluate the effects of alendronate (ALN) and risedronate (RIS), which are agents for preventing and treating postmenopausal osteoporosis, on hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation in ovariectomized rats. Materials and methods: Thirty-two female rats were randomly assigned to 4 separate groups. All of the groups, except the control group, were ovariectomized. Included in the 4 groups were a control group (C), an ovariectomized group (OVX), an ovariectomized group treated with alendronate (OVX-ALN), and an ovariectomized group treated with risedronate (OVX-RIS). Ten weeks after an ovariectomy, the OVX-ALN rats were administered 1.75 mg/kg of their body weight with alendronate …
